Learn Dutch: Ik heb mijn notitieboekje niet bij me. - I don't have my notebook with me.

When talking about having an item on your person or carrying it around, Dutch uses the preposition bij. If you used met me, it would sound like the notebook is a companion you are doing an activity with.

In Dutch, the first and second person object pronouns (me, je, ons, jullie) double as their own reflexive pronouns. A true distinct reflexive pronoun like zich only exists for the third person. If the subject were hij (he), the sentence would be Hij heeft zijn notitieboekje niet bij zich.

Why does niet go exactly there, between the object and the prepositional phrase?

In Dutch word order, the negative word niet typically comes after a specific direct object (like mijn notitieboekje) but before a prepositional phrase showing location or direction (like bij me).
