Questions & Answers about Sinds we samenwerken, ben ik u dankbaar. Kon u mij vandaag helpen?
Why use the past tense kon when the sentence specifically asks about vandaag (today)?
This is the beleefdheidsimperfectum (tentative simple past). Just like in English where "Could you..." is softer than "Can you...", Dutch uses the simple past of modal verbs like kunnen (kon) to make a present or future request sound less direct and more polite.
The English translation says "have been working", but samenwerken is present tense. Why?
In Dutch, when an action started in the past and continues into the present, you use the present tense. Because of sinds (since), we know the working relationship is still ongoing. English uses the present perfect continuous for this, which is a common habit English speakers need to unlearn when speaking Dutch!
Why is the word order ben ik instead of ik ben?
This is a classic case of inversion caused by the V2 (verb second) rule. The entire subordinate clause (Sinds we samenwerken) occupies the first position in the sentence. Therefore, the main verb (ben) must take the second position, pushing the subject (ik) immediately after it.
Why is there no preposition before u for "grateful to you"?
