Questions & Answers about Omdat het overzicht niet klopt, ben ik het aan het veranderen.
Why is the word het placed before aan het veranderen?
This is the main rule for using direct objects with the present continuous! When you use the aan het + infinitive construction, the direct object (het, meaning "it") must be placed before aan het. You cannot put it at the end of the sentence like you do in English.
Why does the second part say ben ik instead of ik ben?
Because the sentence starts with a subordinate clause (Omdat het overzicht niet klopt). In Dutch, if you start a sentence with a whole clause, the main clause that follows must use inverted word order (verb + subject). Therefore, ik ben flips to ben ik.
The word klopt comes from kloppen, which means "to knock". Why is it translated as "incorrect" here?
While kloppen does mean "to knock" or "to beat", it is also a very common way to say "to be correct" or "to add up". So, het klopt niet simply means "it is incorrect" or "it doesn't add up".
Why is klopt at the very end of the first clause?
The conjunction omdat (because) introduces a subordinate clause. In Dutch subordinate clauses, the conjugated verb (in this case, klopt) gets pushed all the way to the end of its clause, right before the comma.
