Near-native register judgment is not possession of one perfect, universal Persian. It is the ability to choose among well-formed alternatives for a particular genre, relationship, region, medium, and moment—and to revise that choice when better evidence appears. This path introduces no new construction. It sequences the guide's register, regional, pragmatic, lexical, and editorial pages into an evidence-based capstone.
Native speakers themselves have different repertoires and can disagree about style. Your C2 goal is therefore not to imitate an imaginary single authority. It is to make fine-grained choices, identify their domain, and distinguish personal preference from community convention and documented distribution.
Route map
| Stage | Judgment problem | Evidence product |
|---|---|---|
| ۱ | imitate a genre without caricature | parallel genre samples |
| ۲ | evaluate regional evidence | bounded variation note |
| ۳ | interpret taʿârof and pragmatic force | contextual interaction analysis |
| ۴ | choose a lexical and morphological layer | collocation-based decision sheet |
| ۵ | defend an editorial alternative | revision memo with counteroption |
| ۶ | integrate all dimensions | capstone register dossier |
Stage ۱: Imitate genre features, not surface stereotypes
Review One Language, Several Grammars of Use, then compare Journalistic Persian, Academic Persian, Bureaucratic and Legal Persian, and Literary Modern Persian.
Choose one proposition and express it as a headline lead, research limitation, official notice, and narrated observation. Track agent visibility, tense, information order, lexical bundle, sentence length, and degree of evaluation. A genre imitation fails if it relies only on long words or passive verbs.
بر اساس اعلام شرکت، اجرای طرح تا پایان ماه به تعویق افتاد.
bar asâs-e e'lâm-e sherkat, ejrâ-ye tarh tâ pâyân-e mâh be ta'viq oftâd.
According to the company announcement, implementation of the plan was postponed until the end of the month. (journalistic report)
این نتیجه به نمونهی حاضر محدود است و برای تعمیم آن به دادههای بیشتری نیاز داریم.
in natije be nemune-ye hâzer mahdud ast va barâ-ye ta'mim-e ân be dâde-hâ-ye bishtari niyâz dârim.
This result is limited to the present sample, and we need more data to generalize it. (academic limitation)
متقاضیان باید مدارک کامل را تا پایان مهلت مقرر ارسال کنند.
motaqâziyân bâyad madârek-e kâmel râ tâ pâyân-e mohlat-e moqarrar ersâl konand.
Applicants must submit the complete documents by the stated deadline. (administrative)
نامه روی میز مانده بود و کسی جرئت نمیکرد آن را باز کند.
nâme ru-ye miz mânde bud va kasi jor'at nemi-kard ân râ bâz konad.
The letter had remained on the table, and nobody dared open it. (modern literary narration)
Review loop: remove the genre label and ask an advanced reader to identify the intended text type and cite two linguistic clues.
Stage ۲: Bound regional claims tightly
Use Comparative Persian Dialectology for Readers, Contact-induced Grammar, and Iranian Regional Dialects versus Persian Accents.
For each feature, record speaker, place, generation if known, medium, surrounding register, token count, and source. Then phrase the claim at the same scale as the evidence: “this speaker in this interview,” not “people from this city always.” Separate a regional Persian accent from a different Iranian language, and separate contact influence from deficiency.
این صورت در سه مصاحبهی غیررسمی از گویندگان همین محله دیده شد.
in surat dar se mosâhebe-ye gheyr-e rasmi az guyandegân-e hamin mahalle dide shod.
This form occurred in three informal interviews with speakers from this neighborhood. (bounded evidence statement)
این داده برای حکم دادن دربارهی همهی گویندگان شهر کافی نیست.
in dâde barâ-ye hokm dâdan darbâre-ye hame-ye guyandegân-e shahr kâfi nist.
This datum is not sufficient for making a claim about every speaker in the city.
Stage ۳: Analyze taʿârof as interaction
Revisit Taʿârof as a Pragmatic System, Irony, Understatement, and Polite Negation, and Silence, Ellipsis, and Shared Knowledge.
Annotate complete sequences rather than isolated formulas: participant roles, relationship, offer specificity, refusal design, repetition, visible action, risk, and final outcome. The same قابل شما را ندارد can perform ritual generosity in a shop or participate in a genuine gift; the material context distinguishes them.
فروشنده تعارف کرد، اما مشتری مبلغ دقیق را پرسید و پرداخت کرد.
forushande ta'ârof kard, ammâ moshtari mablagh-e daqiq râ porsid va pardâkht kard.
The seller made a taʿârof offer, but the customer asked the exact amount and paid. (complete interactional outcome)
دعوت دوم با روز و ساعت مشخص همراه بود، بنابراین آن را برنامهی واقعی دانستم.
da'vat-e dovvom bâ ruz-o sâ'at-e moshakhkhas hamrâh bud, banâbar-in ân râ barnâme-ye vâqe'i dânestam.
The second invitation included a specific day and time, so I treated it as a concrete plan.
Do not claim mind-reading. Report cues and consequences: “the speaker repeated the specific offer and began serving,” not “the speaker secretly meant X.”
Stage ۴: Choose lexical layers by collocation and task
Review Persian-derived or Arabic-derived Formal Vocabulary, Simple Verb or Compound Verb, and Nominalization or Finite Clause.
For five contested choices, collect examples from the intended genre and note their collocates, grammatical frames, frequency, and institutional meaning. Do not choose solely by word origin. A Persian-derived item can be formal, an Arabic-derived item conversational, and a compound verb more idiomatic than a superficially elegant simple verb.
در این رشته، اصطلاح دوم تعریف دقیقتری دارد و در متن حفظ میشود.
dar in reshte, estelâh-e dovvom ta'rif-e daqiq-tari dârad va dar matn hefz mi-shavad.
In this field, the second term has a more precise definition and will be retained in the text.
فعل ساده در این ترکیب رسمی است، ولی با این مفعول همنشینی طبیعی ندارد.
fe'l-e sâde dar in tarkib rasmi ast, vali bâ in maf'ul ham-neshini-ye tabi'i na-dârad.
The simple verb is formal in this construction, but it does not collocate naturally with this object.
Production goal: supply the preferred choice, a valid alternative, their domains, and one sentence where changing the item changes more than style.
Stage ۵: Defend a revision and its counteroption
Professional judgment becomes visible in the explanation. Select a paragraph with mixed register or excessive density. Produce two revisions: minimal correction and genre adaptation. Use Mixing Written and Colloquial Forms and Overloading Prose with Arabic Nominalizations as diagnostic controls.
For each major change, write: observed problem, revision, alternative you rejected, evidence, and consequence. Invite disagreement about preference while defending factual boundaries such as malformed morphology, wrong Unicode, or misattributed quotation.
ویرایش نخست فقط ناهماهنگی سبکی را برطرف میکند و لحن نویسنده را نگه میدارد.
virâyesh-e nokhost faqat nâ-hamâhangi-ye sabki râ bar-taraf mi-konad va lahn-e nevisande râ negah mi-dârad.
The first edit corrects only the register inconsistency and preserves the author's voice.
گزینهی دوم روانتر است، اما میزان قطعیت ادعای اصلی را بیشتر میکند.
gozine-ye dovvom ravân-tar ast, ammâ mizân-e qat'iyyat-e edde'â-ye asli râ bishtar mi-konad.
The second option is more fluent, but it increases the certainty of the original claim.
Common Mistakes
Treating the most formal wording as the best in every genre
⚠️ لطفا نسبت به ارسال پیام اقدام بفرمایید.
lotfan nesbat be ersâl-e payâm eqdâm be-farmâyid.
Please undertake action with respect to sending the message. (possible bureaucratic style, comically heavy for a friendly text)
✅ لطفا پیام را برایم بفرستید.
lotfan payâm râ barâ-yam be-ferestid.
Please send me the message. (neutral polite request)
Generalizing from one regional speaker
⚠️ این گوینده چنین گفت، پس همهی مردم استان همینطور حرف میزنند.
in guyande chonin goft, pas hame-ye mardom-e ostân hamin-towr harf mi-zanand.
This speaker said it this way, so everyone in the province speaks this way. (unsupported regional generalization)
✅ این صورت را فعلا به همین گوینده و همین موقعیت نسبت میدهم.
in surat râ fe'lan be hamin guyande va hamin mowqe'iyyat nesbat mi-daham.
For now, I attribute this form to this speaker and this situation.
Reducing taʿârof to a fixed formula count
⚠️ بعد از سومین تعارف، معنای واقعی جمله همیشه روشن است.
ba'd az sevvomin ta'ârof, ma'nâ-ye vâqe'i-ye jomle hamishe rowshan ast.
After the third taʿârof move, the sentence's real meaning is always clear. (false mechanical rule)
✅ تعداد نوبتها را همراه با رابطه، جزئیات پیشنهاد و رفتار بعدی میسنجم.
te'dâd-e nobat-hâ râ hamrâh bâ râbete, joz'iyyât-e pishnehâd va raftâr-e ba'di mi-sanjam.
I assess the number of turns together with the relationship, offer details, and subsequent behavior.
Defending an edit as pure intuition
⚠️ این نسخه بهتر است چون فارسیتر به گوش من میرسد.
in noskhe behtar ast chon Fârsi-tar be gush-e man mi-resad.
This version is better because it sounds more Persian to me. (unexamined intuition)
✅ این گزینه را به دلیل همنشینی رایج و حفظ میزان قطعیت ترجیح میدهم.
in gozine râ be dalil-e ham-neshini-ye râyej va hefz-e mizân-e qat'iyyat tarjih mi-daham.
I prefer this option because of its established collocation and preservation of the degree of certainty.
Diagnostic exit task
Build a register dossier around one proposition. Include four genre versions, a 200-word explanation of their grammatical differences, one bounded regional observation with metadata, one complete taʿârof sequence analyzed from roles to outcome, three lexical decisions supported by collocation, and a paragraph edited in minimal and adaptive versions. Ask two advanced readers to challenge your claims; record agreement, disagreement, and revision.
Pass when the genre versions are distinguishable without caricature, regional claims do not exceed the evidence, pragmatic analysis avoids mind-reading, lexical choices are usage-based, and editorial changes preserve semantic force. The task demonstrates advanced judgment in these domains; it does not certify universal intuition across every Persian-speaking community.
Key Takeaways
- Register belongs to a genre, relationship, region, medium, and moment—not a single ladder from casual to “best.”
- Bound sociolinguistic claims to the speakers and contexts actually observed.
- Analyze pragmatic sequences through cues and outcomes rather than stereotypes or mind-reading.
- Near-native judgment is revisable and evidence-based; explain alternatives instead of disguising preference as law.
