Persian-Derived or Arabic-Derived Formal Vocabulary?

Formal Iranian Persian draws on inherited Persian words, centuries of Arabic-derived vocabulary, and fully natural hybrid formations. The practical choice is not “native good, borrowed bad” or “Arabic formal, Persian informal.” Choose the word that gives your audience the intended meaning in an established Persian collocation with the right degree of technical precision.

پرسش and سؤال, آغاز and شروع, پژوهش and تحقیق all belong to modern Persian. Sometimes their meanings overlap; sometimes genre or collocation favors one; sometimes a supposed pair is not synonymous at all. Etymology explains history, but present-day usage governs composition.

The Decision Tree

  1. Is one word the fixed term in your field, institution, or document genre? Use the established term.
  2. Will a general audience understand both equally? Choose by tone and collocation, not origin.
  3. Does one candidate make the morphology more transparent to readers? Prefer it when clarity improves without changing the technical meaning.
  4. Do the words differ in semantic scope? Preserve the precise distinction; do not “Persianize” away needed content.
  5. Is the proposed replacement actually attested and idiomatic? If not, keep the established Arabic-derived or hybrid expression.
  6. Is the prose overloaded with abstract nouns? Simplify syntax before conducting a word-by-word etymological purge.
PairOverlapUsage-based warning
آغاز / شروعbeginning, startboth are standard; collocations and house style vary
پرسش / سؤالquestionپرسش‌نامه is lexicalized; سؤال کردن is very common
پژوهش / تحقیقresearch, investigationfield and institutional labels matter
کاربرد / استفادهusetheir grammatical frames differ

Modern Persian owns its loanwords. Once a word has entered Persian, it takes Persian ezâfe, plural markers, clitics, and derivational elements; its historical source does not make it foreign grammar.

Register Is Not Etymology

Arabic-derived سؤال is ordinary in conversation; Persian-derived پرسش can sound neutral, institutional, or scholarly depending on context. Persian-derived آغاز often sounds planned or written, while Arabic-derived شروع is extremely common across speech and writing. No origin-based scale predicts these facts.

اگر سؤالی داری، همین حالا بپرس.

agar so'âli dâri, hamin hâlâ be-pors.

If you have a question, ask now. (neutral conversation; Arabic-derived noun, Persian verb)

پرسش‌های مصاحبه پیش از آغاز پژوهش بازبینی شدند.

porsesh-hâ-ye mosâhebe pish az âghâz-e pazhuhesh bâzbini shodand.

The interview questions were reviewed before the research began. (academic; Persian-derived choices fit the institutional wording)

جلسه رأس ساعت نه شروع می‌شود.

jalase ra's-e sâ'at-e noh shoru' mi-shavad.

The meeting starts at exactly nine. (neutral; mixed-origin sentence, wholly standard Persian)

The last sentence contains Arabic-derived جلسه، رأس، ساعت، شروع inside Persian syntax. Replacing each one would not automatically make it clearer, more natural, or more formal.

Established Collocation Decides

Near-synonyms form different combinations. پرسش‌نامه is the conventional compound “questionnaire”; سؤالات متداول and پرسش‌های متداول are both familiar headings. از چیزی استفاده کردن requires از, whereas کاربردِ چیزی is commonly a noun phrase meaning “the use/application of something.”

لطفا پیش از جلسه پرسش‌نامه‌ی رضایت را تکمیل کنید.

lotfan pish az jalase porsesh-nâme-ye rezâyat râ takmil konid.

Please complete the satisfaction questionnaire before the meeting. (formal-neutral; established compound)

در این فصل از سه روش آماری استفاده می‌کنیم.

dar in fasl az se ravesh-e âmâri estefâde mi-konim.

In this chapter, we use three statistical methods. (academic; استفاده کردن selects از)

کاربرد این روش در داده‌های کوچک محدود است.

kârbord-e in ravesh dar dâde-hâ-ye kuchak mahdud ast.

The applicability of this method to small datasets is limited. (academic; کاربرد denotes application/scope)

Swapping کاربرد for استفاده word by word would require rebuilding the syntax and might change “applicability” into the act of using. Collocation is therefore grammatical information, not decorative style.

Precision Beats Family Resemblance

Words with similar broad glosses may encode different analytical acts. بررسی can mean examination or review; تحلیل is analysis into components or relations; ارزیابی is evaluation against criteria. Choosing بررسی merely because its derivation looks Persian would erase those distinctions.

گزارش ابتدا داده‌ها را توصیف می‌کند، سپس رابطه‌ی متغیرها را تحلیل می‌کند.

gozâresh ebtedâ dâde-hâ râ towsif mi-konad, sepas râbete-ye motaghayyer-hâ râ tahlil mi-konad.

The report first describes the data, then analyzes the relationship among the variables. (academic; technical distinctions preserved)

کمیته کیفیت اجرای برنامه را بر اساس سه شاخص ارزیابی کرد.

komite keyfiyyat-e ejrâ-ye barnâme râ bar asâs-e se shâkhes arzyâbi kard.

The committee evaluated the quality of the program's implementation using three indicators. (formal/academic)

Technical communities stabilize terms through use. A translator should check the target field's publications, not create a novel equivalent solely because its components are transparent.

💡
A familiar precise loan is usually clearer than an unfamiliar transparent coinage. Transparency helps only when readers can actually recover the intended concept.

Morphological Transparency and Word Families

Persian-derived families can be easy to parse: دانستن، دانش، دانشگاه، دانشجو، پژوهیدن، پژوهش، پژوهشگر. Individual family members still differ in frequency: پژوهیدن is formal and much less common than پژوهش or پژوهشگر. Arabic-derived families can also become familiar through recurring Persian usage: علم، علمی، اطلاعات. Yet learners should not freely generate Arabic plurals or derivations from a perceived root; these forms are lexical borrowings in Persian.

دانشگاه برای پژوهشگران جوان کارگاه روش تحقیق برگزار کرد.

dâneshgâh barâ-ye pazhuheshgarân-e javân kârgâh-e ravesh-e tahqiq bargozâr kard.

The university held a research-methods workshop for young researchers. (academic; Persian, Arabic-derived, and hybrid elements coexist)

The sentence does not alternate between “pure” and “impure” vocabulary. پژوهشگر combines Persian morphology, تحقیق is Arabic-derived, and both participate in one established academic register.

Hybrid Words Are Normal

Productive Persian suffixes attach to many established Arabic-derived bases: قانون‌گذار، علمی‌تر، مسئولیت‌پذیر. Compounds can likewise mix sources. Such words are synchronically Persian formations even when their components have different histories.

قانون‌گذار باید پیامدهای اجتماعی تصمیم را هم در نظر بگیرد.

qânun-gozâr bâyad payâmad-hâ-ye ejtemâ'i-ye tasmim râ ham dar nazar be-girad.

The legislator must also consider the social consequences of the decision. (formal; established hybrid formation)

The historical integration of such material is treated on Persian and Arabic Elements in Hybrid Words.

Minimal Contrast

آغاز ثبت‌نام از دوشنبه خواهد بود.

âghâz-e sabt-nâm az doshanbe khâhad bud.

Registration will begin on Monday. (formal announcement; آغاز foregrounds the beginning)

ثبت‌نام از دوشنبه شروع می‌شود.

sabt-nâm az doshanbe shoru' mi-shavad.

Registration starts on Monday. (neutral and direct)

Both are standard. The first is more nominal and announcement-like; the second is a finite clause suitable across registers. Origin alone did not produce the contrast.

Two Ambiguous Contexts, Resolved Aloud

A public-service website

Choose the label readers already search for. If both پرسش‌های متداول and سؤالات متداول are familiar, follow institutional consistency; do not switch every Arabic-derived form at the cost of navigation.

An academic argument

Choose تحلیل when you mean analysis, ارزیابی when criteria yield a judgment, and بررسی for broader examination. A superficially “simpler” replacement is wrong if it changes the research operation.

این مقاله کاربرد اصطلاح را بررسی می‌کند، نه اعتبار نظریه را.

in maqâle kârbord-e estelâh râ barrasi mi-konad, na e'tebâr-e nazariyye râ.

This article examines the use of the term, not the validity of the theory. (academic; scope made precise)

Common Mistakes

1. Treating every Arabic-derived word as formal

⚠️ سؤال فقط در نوشته‌های رسمی به کار می‌رود.

so'âl faqat dar neveshte-hâ-ye rasmi be kâr mi-ravad.

A grammatical but false register claim: سؤال is entirely ordinary in modern conversation.

✅ من یک سؤال کوتاه درباره‌ی زمان تحویل دارم.

man yek so'âl-e kutâh darbâre-ye zamân-e tahvil dâram.

I have a short question about the delivery time.

2. Replacing a technical term with a loose near-synonym

⚠️ ارزیابی و توصیف همیشه یک معنی دارند.

arzyâbi va towsif hamishe yek ma'ni dârand.

A grammatical but false equivalence: evaluation judges against criteria, whereas description reports properties.

✅ گزارش وضعیت را توصیف می‌کند و سپس نتایج را ارزیابی می‌کند.

gozâresh vaz'iyyat râ towsif mi-konad va sepas natâyej râ arzyâbi mi-konad.

The report describes the situation and then evaluates the results.

3. Ignoring the predicate's grammatical frame

⚠️ این ابزار را استفاده کردیم.

in abzâr râ estefâde kardim.

Attested in colloquial and looser usage, but avoid it in the intended careful formal register; the conservative established frame uses از.

✅ در آزمایش دوم از ابزار دقیق‌تری استفاده کردیم.

dar âzmâyesh-e dovvom az abzâr-e daqiq-tari estefâde kardim.

In the second experiment, we used a more precise instrument.

4. Rejecting normal hybrid morphology

⚠️ مسئولیت‌پذیر نادرست است چون اجزای آن هم‌ریشه نیستند.

mas'uliyyat-pazir nâdorost ast chun ajzâ-ye ân ham-rishe nistand.

A grammatical but false purist judgment: mixed historical origin does not invalidate an established Persian word.

✅ برای این سمت فردی باتجربه و مسئولیت‌پذیر لازم است.

barâ-ye in samt fardi bâ-tajrobe va mas'uliyyat-pazir lâzem ast.

This position requires an experienced, responsible person.
