Modern Persian freely combines material of different historical origins. کتابخانه joins Arabic کتاب to Persian خانه; قانونگذار joins Arabic قانون to Persian گذار; and بیاحترامی places the Persian prefix بیـ and suffix ـی around Arabic احترام. These are not half-Persian errors. They are Persian words whose components happen to have different etymologies.
The crucial distinction is between diachronic origin and synchronic grammar. Etymology tells us where a component came from. Modern grammar tells us which affixes it accepts, how the word is stressed and pluralized, and what it means to Iranian Persian speakers now.
Borrowed bases enter Persian morphology
Once an Arabic noun or adjective is established in Persian, it can serve as a base for Persian derivation and compounding. The Encyclopaedia Iranica survey of Arabic elements in Persian notes this integration explicitly: Arabic loan stems take Persian affixes and clitics rather than retaining an obligatory Arabic inflectional frame.
| Hybrid word | Modern analysis | Meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|---|

qânun-gozârân bâyad peyâmad-hâ-ye ejtemâ'i-ye tarh râ ham barrasi konand.
Legislators must also examine the proposal's social consequences. (formal/political; Persian agent compound and plural)
Boundaries and standard spelling
Origin alone does not determine whether a word is solid or uses a ZWNJ. Established کتابخانه is written solid, while productive or visibly compound formations commonly mark their boundary: قانونگذار، جامعهشناسی، اطلاعرسانی، احترامآمیز. بیاحترامی also keeps بیـ visibly joined by a ZWNJ.
Editors should consult current standard spelling for the whole word. Writing کتابخانه merely to display an etymological seam creates a nonstandard intervention; removing the ZWNJ from قانونگذار hides a productive compound boundary. The general conventions are explained on Word Division in Compounds and Derivatives.
دانشکده برای اطلاعرسانی دربارهی بورسیهها جلسهای برگزار کرد.
dâneshkade barâ-ye ettelâ'-rasâni darbâre-ye bursiyye-hâ jalase-i bargozâr kard.
The faculty held a meeting to provide information about scholarships. (formal institutional register; standard ZWNJ boundary)

This study takes an interdisciplinary approach to the sociology of language. (academic; hybrid field name embedded in Persian syntax)
Persian pronunciation and stress
Persian normally preserves the conventional spelling of an Arabic loan while adapting its sounds to Persian. Letters that represent distinct Arabic consonants may merge in Iranian Persian pronunciation; no speaker must restore Arabic emphatics or case endings merely because the base is etymologically Arabic.
The completed hybrid follows Persian word prosody. Derivational ـی usually bears final stress in bi-ehterâmi; final compound elements are prominent in ketâbkhâne and qânun-gozâr. Sentence focus can override that prominence, but an Arabic source pronunciation does not impose Arabic stress or tanwin on the Persian word.
رفتار احترامآمیز کارمند باعث شد گفتوگو آرام بماند.
raftâr-e ehterâm-âmiz-e kârmand bâ'es shod goft-o-gu ârâm be-mânad.
The employee's respectful conduct kept the conversation calm. (neutral-formal; Persian compound stress and ezâfe)
Historical analysis may identify an Arabic pattern inside the base, but modern speakers need not reconstruct that pattern to use the hybrid. قانون is a Persian lexical base for قانونگذار even though its deeper history lies outside Persian.
Register comes from the whole word
A mixed origin does not automatically make a word formal. کتابخانه، بیادب، باحوصله are everyday words. By contrast, اطلاعرسانی، قانونگذاری، جامعهشناسی belong naturally to institutional, political, or academic discourse because their whole conventional meanings belong there.
— چرا جوابش را ندادی؟ — چون حرفش واقعا بیادبانه بود.
— cherâ javâb-ash râ na-dâdi? — chun harf-ash vâqe'an bi-adabâne bud.
— Why didn't you answer him? — Because what he said was really rude. (informal-neutral dialogue; everyday hybrid بیادبانه)
سامانهی جدید روند ثبت درخواست را قانونمندتر میکند.
sâmâne-ye jadid ravand-e sabt-e darkhâst râ qânun-mand-tar mi-konad.
The new system makes the application process more rule-governed. (formal; Arabic base plus Persian suffix and comparative)
Purist alternatives are editorial choices
Some editors or institutions prefer a more visibly Persian formation where a well-established alternative exists: واژهنامه beside hybrid لغتنامه, or آموزشوپرورش beside Arabic-heavy تعلیموتربیت. Such choices can make terminology more transparent, but they are not grammatical corrections.
Deeply established hybrids such as کتابخانه are simply ordinary Persian. A purist replacement can also alter nuance: واژهنامه often suggests a glossary or word list, while فرهنگ لغت readily means a full dictionary. Replace terms only after checking meaning, audience, institutional convention, and corpus usage.
ویراستار در این کتاب «واژهنامه» را به «لغتنامه» ترجیح داده است.
virâstâr dar in ketâb «vâzhe-nâme» râ be «loghat-nâme» tarjih dâde ast.
In this book, the editor has preferred vâzhe-nâme to loghat-nâme. (editorial description; preference, not grammaticality)
Common Mistakes
1. Rejecting any mixed-origin word as un-Persian
⚠️ کتابخانه غلط است چون کتاب عربی و خانه فارسی است.
ketâbkhâne ghalat ast chun ketâb arabi va khâne fârsi ast.
The sentence is grammatical, but its analysis is false: mixed etymology does not make an established Persian word ungrammatical.
✅ کتابخانه فردا تا ساعت هشت باز میماند.
ketâbkhâne fardâ tâ sâ'at-e hasht bâz mi-mânad.
The library will remain open until eight tomorrow.
2. Importing Arabic inflection into a Persian derivative
❌ قانوناتگذاری باید شفاف باشد.
Incorrect — Persian قانونگذاری uses the bare loan base قانون; an Arabic-style internal inflection is not inserted.
✅ فرایند قانونگذاری باید شفاف باشد.
farâyand-e qânun-gozâri bâyad shaffâf bâshad.
The legislative process must be transparent.
3. Pluralizing the internal base
❌ قوانینگذاران این طرح را تصویب کردند.
Incorrect compound formation — plural belongs to the completed agent noun, not to internal قانون.
✅ قانونگذاران این طرح را پس از بحث طولانی تصویب کردند.
qânun-gozârân in tarh râ pas az bahs-e tulâni tasvib kardand.
The legislators approved this proposal after a long debate.
4. Replacing an established term word for word
❌ برای پسدادن کتاب به خانهی کتاب رفتم.
Incorrect intended meaning — خانهی کتاب is a phrase or proper name, not the ordinary replacement for کتابخانه ‘library.’
✅ برای پسدادن کتاب به کتابخانهی دانشگاه رفتم.
barâ-ye pas-dâdan-e ketâb be ketâbkhâne-ye dâneshgâh raftam.
I went to the university library to return the book.
Key Takeaways
- A word may mix Arabic-origin bases with Persian affixes or compound elements and still be fully Persian in grammar.
- Modern boundaries, standard spelling, stress, and meaning belong to the whole integrated word, not automatically to its source-language structure.
- Origin does not predict register: some hybrids are everyday, while others are institutional or academic.
- Purist alternatives are choices about transparency and style, not proof that established hybrids are wrong.
