Historical Prefixes and Fossilized Derivation

The beginnings فرا، فرو، بر، باز، اندر recur in Persian verbs and derived words, but they do not all behave as equally productive modern prefixes. بازنویسی “rewriting” is transparently built with productive بازـ; برگشتن “to return” contains a lexical preverb; اندرآمدن belongs mainly to older texts; and فروختن “to sell” must not be split into modern فرو + ختن.

Historical analysis therefore needs two separate questions. First, did an element participate in an earlier morphological structure? Second, can a modern Iranian Persian speaker use that same structure to form or predict new words? The first does not guarantee the second.

From spatial words to lexical preverbs

Older Iranian stages used spatial elements before verbs with meanings such as “up/out,” “down/in,” “back,” and “inside.” Over time, frequent element–verb combinations could fuse semantically and orthographically. The Encyclopaedia Iranica account of Early New Persian documents older abar, andar, furōd beside later بر، در، فرو, showing that the modern shapes are outcomes of historical change rather than a single timeless inventory.

ElementHistorical/core orientationModern examplesModern status
فراـforth, forward; extension beyondفراخواندن، فرارسیدن، فرابنفشlexical in verbs; productive in selected formal/technical coinages
فروـdown, inwardفروریختن، فرونشستن، فروپاشیtransparent in a limited lexical family
برـup, out, away; other lexicalized directionsبرخاستن، برآمدن، برگشتنmainly lexical as a verbal preverb
بازـback, againبازگشتن، بازنویسی، بازسازیlexical in some verbs and productive as “re-” in formal coinage
اندرin, withinاندرآمدن، اندرونliterary/archaic or fossilized

This table gives orientations, not translation equations. برـ does not mean English up in every word, and بازـ is not automatically English again. A lexical verb stores the meaning of the whole formation.

پس از چند ماه مذاکره، دو طرف به میز گفت‌وگو بازگشتند.

pas az chand mâh mozâkere, do taraf be miz-e goft-o-gu bâz-gashtand.

After several months of negotiation, the two sides returned to the negotiating table. (formal; lexical بازگشتن)

با فرارسیدن زمستان، رفت‌وآمد در این گردنه دشوار می‌شود.

bâ farâ-residan-e zemestân, raft-o-âmad dar in gardane doshvâr mi-shavad.

With the arrival of winter, travel through this mountain pass becomes difficult. (formal/literary; lexical فرارسیدن)

پس از قطع باران، آب رودخانه به‌آرامی فرونشست.

pas az qat'-e bârân, âb-e rudkhâne be-ârâmi foru-neshast.

After the rain stopped, the river water slowly subsided. (formal narrative; downward/resultative فروـ)

💡
Translate the whole verb first. A spatial image may explain a historical family, but it cannot replace the dictionary meaning and argument structure of برآمدن، برگشتن، فرونشستن, or فراخواندن.

Productive بازـ and فراـ in modern coinage

Modern formal and technical Persian uses بازـ to form nouns and stems meaning renewed or repeated activity: بازنویسی “rewriting,” بازبینی “review/reinspection,” بازسازی “reconstruction.” This pattern is relatively available, though each new term still needs conventional acceptance.

ویراستار پیشنهاد کرد مقدمه را کوتاه و فصل آخر را بازنویسی کنیم.

virâstâr pishnehâd kard moqaddame râ kutâh va fasl-e âkhar râ bâz-nevisi konim.

The editor suggested that we shorten the introduction and rewrite the final chapter. (formal; productive بازـ ‘re-’)

فراـ likewise appears in learned and technical formations such as فرابنفش “ultraviolet” and فرازبان “metalanguage.” Here it contributes a “beyond, higher-order, trans-” relation. That modern terminological use should be distinguished from lexical فراـ in فراخواندن or فرارسیدن, where the whole verb has an established meaning.

این فیلتر بخش زیادی از پرتو فرابنفش را جذب می‌کند.

in filter bakhsh-e ziyâdi az parto-e farâ-banafsh râ jazb mi-konad.

This filter absorbs much of the ultraviolet radiation. (technical; modern terminological فراـ)

Even in these productive domains, do not assume one-to-one equivalence with English re-, meta-, or ultra-. Terminological committees and specialist communities conventionalize particular formations; a formally imaginable word may remain unfamiliar.

Lexical preverbs inside finite verbs

In verbs such as برگشتن, aspect and negation can occur after the preverb: برمی‌گردد، برنمی‌گردد، برگردد. This separability is morphological, not syntactic independence: modern برـ cannot be moved elsewhere in the clause while retaining the same verb.

اگر گزارش ناقص باشد، پرونده برای اصلاح برمی‌گردد.

agar gozâresh nâqes bâshad, parvande barâ-ye eslâh bar-mi-gardad.

If the report is incomplete, the file is returned for correction. (formal; lexical preverb outside می‌)

The finite ordering belongs to verb grammar, covered on Lexical and Separable Preverbs. Historical morphology instead asks why the initial element exists and how transparent it remains.

اندر: preserved register, not a modern general prefix

Independent اندر is (literary/archaic) for modern در. Older texts also contain verbs beginning with اندرـ, but present-day speakers do not freely attach it to a new verb meaning “in.” اندرون “inside/interior” is an established lexical item, and formations based on it must be analyzed as modern words in their own right.

در متن کهن، «اندر خانه شد» را می‌توان «وارد خانه شد» معنا کرد.

dar matn-e kohan, «andar khâne shod» râ mi-tavân «vâred-e khâne shod» ma'nâ kard.

In an old text, andar khâne shod can be glossed as ‘entered the house.’ (academic; quotation recognized and modernly glossed)

مصحح صورت «اندرآمد» را حفظ کرده و معنی امروزی آن را در حاشیه آورده است.

mosahheh surat-e «andar-âmad» râ hefz karde va ma'ni-ye emruzi-ye ân râ dar hâshiye âvarde ast.

The editor has retained the form andar-âmad and supplied its modern meaning in the margin. (philological/editorial practice)

These are constructed editorial examples, not unattributed quotations from a historical work.

Opaque beginnings and false segmentation

A word beginning with the same letters need not contain the prefix synchronically. فروختن “to sell” is not فرو + ختن; no independent modern verb ختن supplies its meaning. فراموش is not productively فرا + موش, بازار is not باز + ار, and بردن “to carry/take” is not automatically a برـ preverb formation.

The correct procedure is to check whether the remainder is an attested stem, whether related forms preserve the boundary, whether inflection respects it, and whether historical dictionaries support the analysis. Similar spelling is only the first clue.

— آیا فرو در «فروختن» پیشوند است؟ — نه، این واژه در فارسی امروز تجزیه‌پذیر نیست.

— âyâ foru dar «forukhtan» pishvand ast? — na, in vâzhe dar fârsi-ye emruz tajziye-pazir nist.

— Is foru a prefix in forukhtan? — No; in modern Persian this word is not segmentable. (academic dialogue; false split rejected)

💡
A dictionary decomposition needs a real remainder. If removing a suspected prefix leaves no independently supported stem or family, label the modern word opaque instead of inventing a morpheme.

Common Mistakes

1. Giving every prefix a fixed English translation

⚠️ بر در برگشتن همیشه یعنی بالا.

bar dar bar-gashtan hamishe ya'ni bâlâ.

A grammatical metalinguistic claim, but a false one: historical spatial orientation does not predict every lexicalized meaning.

✅ برگشتن در این جمله یعنی بازآمدن، نه بالا رفتن.

bar-gashtan dar in jomle ya'ni bâz-âmadan, na bâlâ raftan.

In this sentence, bar-gashtan means returning, not going upward.

2. Splitting an opaque word by sight

⚠️ فراموش از فرا و موش به معنی موش دور ساخته شده است.

farâmush az farâ va mush be ma'ni-ye mush-e dur sâkhte shode ast.

A grammatical but false folk segmentation: visible letter sequences do not establish a historical word family.

✅ برای ریشه‌شناسی فراموش باید به فرهنگ تاریخی مراجعه کرد.

barâ-ye rishe-shenâsi-ye farâmush bâyad be farhang-e târikhi morâje'e kard.

To investigate the etymology of farâmush, one must consult a historical dictionary.

3. Using اندر as an unmarked modern prefix

❌ لطفا فایل را اندربرنامه کن.

Incorrect modern coinage — اندر is not a freely productive equivalent of English ‘in-/into’ here.

✅ لطفا فایل را وارد برنامه کن.

lotfan fâyl râ vâred-e barnâme kon.

Please import the file into the program.

4. Silently modernizing a historical witness

⚠️ مصحح اندر را در متن اصلی به در تبدیل کرد و تغییری ثبت نکرد.

mosahheh andar râ dar matn-e asli be dar tabdil kard va taghyiri sabt na-kard.

A grammatical description of unacceptable diplomatic-editing practice: modernization must be distinguished from the witness.

✅ مصحح اندر را در متن حفظ کرد و برابر امروزی را در یادداشت نوشت.

mosahheh andar râ dar matn hefz kard va barâbar-e emruzi râ dar yâddâsht nevesht.

The editor retained andar in the text and gave its modern equivalent in a note.

Key Takeaways

  • Historical فرا، فرو، بر، باز، اندر began with spatial or directional functions, but modern transparency ranges from productive to completely fossilized.
  • بازـ and technical فراـ support selected modern coinages; verbal برـ، فروـ, and فراـ are often lexical.
  • اندر is literary/archaic or fossilized, not a general modern prefix.
  • Never infer a morpheme boundary from matching initial letters alone; verify the stem, family, inflection, and historical record.
