Modern Persian has a relatively small core of high-frequency simple verbs such as رفتن، آمدن، دیدن، خوردن and a vast vocabulary of compound predicates such as تصمیم گرفتن، قبول کردن، از دست دادن. When a simple and a compound verb have similar English translations, they are rarely interchangeable in every sentence. Choose the expression Persian speakers conventionally use for that meaning, construction, and register.
The misleading question is “Which form is more genuinely Persian?” The useful questions are: Which predicate is frequent here? What arguments does it license? What nuance and register does it carry? Where do tense, negation, and aspect appear? Lexical convention outranks etymological preference. For the structural analysis behind the choice, see Simple Verb versus Compound Verb.
The Decision Tree
- Is there one overwhelmingly conventional predicate for the intended event? Use it, whether simple or compound.
- Do both exist? Check register: یاد گرفتن is everyday “learn,” while آموختن is formal/elevated and can also mean “teach” in its own established frame.
- Check arguments and prepositions. Similar English glosses do not guarantee the same Persian frame.
- Check nuance: پذیرفتن often presents acceptance as a considered act; قبول کردن is broader and very common in speech.
- In a compound, put aspect, negation, person, and mood on the light verb unless the lexical entry specifies otherwise.
- Learn the whole predicate as a dictionary unit, not a noun plus a freely replaceable “empty” verb.
| Pair | Usual choice | Important difference |
|---|---|---|
| آموختن / یاد گرفتن | یاد گرفتن in conversation | آموختن is formal/elevated and also has an established “teach” sense |
| پذیرفتن / قبول کردن | both frequent | register and collocation guide the choice |
| کوشیدن / تلاش کردن | تلاش کردن broadly neutral | کوشیدن is formal/literary |
| گزیدن / انتخاب کردن | انتخاب کردن in ordinary prose | گزیدن is literary/formal or lexicalized |
Frequency Comes Before Shape
Some everyday concepts conventionally use compound predicates. Persian says تصمیم گرفتن “decide,” عادت کردن “get used to,” and کمک کردن “help.” A learner cannot freely turn their nouns into new simple verbs. Conversely, extremely frequent simple verbs such as گفتن and خواستن should not be replaced merely to create a formal tone.
بالاخره تصمیم گرفتیم قرارداد را یک ماه تمدید کنیم.
bâlâkhare tasmim gereftim qarârdâd râ yek mâh tamdid konim.
We finally decided to extend the contract for one month. (neutral; conventional compound predicate)
بعد از چند هفته به برنامهی جدید عادت کردم.
ba'd az chand hafte be barnâme-ye jadid âdat kardam.
After a few weeks, I got used to the new schedule. (neutral; fixed preposition and compound predicate)
Frequency is sense-specific. گرفتن is a simple verb in لیوان را گرفتم “I took/held the glass,” but a light verb inside تصمیم گرفتم. The same written verb can therefore be lexical in one phrase and support another predicate in the next.
Register and Nuance in Overlapping Pairs
یاد گرفتن is the default in everyday Iranian Persian for acquiring a skill or fact. آموختن remains current in formal and elevated writing and appears in educational language. Treat the distinction as a gradient, not as “spoken versus correct.”
رانندگی را از خواهرم یاد گرفتم.
rânandegi râ az khâhar-am yâd gereftam.
I learned to drive from my sister. (neutral conversation)
دانشجو در این دوره میآموزد که دادهها را نقادانه تحلیل کند.
dâneshju dar in dowre mi-âmuzad ke dâde-hâ râ naqqâdâne tahlil konad.
In this course, the student learns to analyze data critically. (formal/academic)
Similarly, قبول کردن is broad and natural in conversation, whereas پذیرفتن is frequent in careful prose and highlights accepting a proposal, responsibility, condition, or conclusion. Both can be entirely standard.
دعوتشان را قبول کردم، ولی گفتم دیر میرسم.
da'vat-eshân râ qabul kardam, vali goftam dir mi-resam.
I accepted their invitation, but said I would arrive late. (neutral conversation)
هیئت داوری مسئولیت این خطا را پذیرفت.
hey'at-e dâvari mas'uliyyat-e in khatâ râ paziroft.
The review panel accepted responsibility for this error. (formal)
Argument Structure Is Lexical
Do not preserve an English preposition when changing Persian predicates. Learn به چیزی عادت کردن, از چیزی استفاده کردن, چیزی را پذیرفتن, and دربارهی چیزی پژوهش کردن as complete frames. Even near-synonyms may differ in what sounds conventional as their object.
همکار تازهام خیلی زود به محیط اداره عادت کرد.
hamkâr-e tâze-am kheyli zud be mohit-e edâre âdat kard.
My new colleague quickly got used to the office environment. (neutral; به is selected by the predicate)
پژوهشگران دربارهی تغییر الگوی مصرف تحقیق کردند.
pazhuheshgarân darbâre-ye taghyir-e olgu-ye masraf tahqiq kardand.
The researchers investigated the change in consumption patterns. (academic; established frame)
No productive rule lets an English speaker infer every frame. Dictionaries and corpus examples are part of grammar here, because collocation determines which apparently possible combination is idiomatic.
Aspect and Negation Belong on the Verbal Host
In a compound predicate, the nonverbal element normally remains unchanged while the light verb carries میـ, نـ, person, tense, and mood. Separable objects and some focus particles may intervene, but learners should first secure the lexical predicate.
هنوز دربارهی پیشنهاد نهایی تصمیم نگرفتهایم.
hanuz darbâre-ye pishnehâd-e nahâyi tasmim na-gerefte-im.
We still haven't decided about the final proposal. (neutral; negation on the light verb)
اگر شرایط را بپذیرید، کار از فردا آغاز میشود.
agar sharâyet râ be-pazirid, kâr az fardâ âghâz mi-shavad.
If you accept the conditions, work will begin tomorrow. (formal-neutral; simple subjunctive)
The simple verb carries the same categories on its own stem; that morphological compactness does not determine stylistic quality.
Minimal Contrast
کودک این واژهها را در خانه یاد گرفته است.
kudak in vâzhe-hâ râ dar khâne yâd gerefte ast.
The child has learned these words at home. (neutral)
کودک این واژهها را در خانه آموخته است.
kudak in vâzhe-hâ râ dar khâne âmukhte ast.
The child has learned these words at home. (formal/elevated)
The event is the same; register changes. Other pairs change meaning or valency more sharply, so this contrast cannot become a universal substitution rule.
Two Ambiguous Contexts, Resolved Aloud
A spoken account of acquiring a skill
Choose یاد گرفتن unless the speaker is deliberately elevated. In a university mission statement, آموختن may match the genre. Audience, not word origin, makes the decision.
A formal acceptance
For accepting legal responsibility, پذیرفتن مسئولیت is a strong established collocation. For casually accepting an invitation, قبول کردن دعوت is ordinary. Switching them is not always ungrammatical, but it changes tone and collocational expectation.
شرکت تعهد کرد که مسئولیت هزینههای اضافی را بپذیرد.
sherkat ta'ahhod kard ke mas'uliyyat-e hazine-hâ-ye ezâfi râ be-pazirad.
The company undertook to accept responsibility for the additional costs. (formal/legal)
Dictionary Practice
Dictionaries may alphabetize a compound under its nonverbal element, list it under the light verb, or cross-reference both. Record the infinitive as a unit, its present stem, its complement frame, and one natural collocation: تصمیم گرفتن — گیر — دربارهی چیزی — تصمیم نهایی گرفتن. This prevents the common error of swapping کردن، شدن، گرفتن، دادن as though they were merely stylistic auxiliaries.
Common Mistakes
1. Inventing a simple verb from every noun
❌ دیروز دربارهی سفر تصمیمیدیم.
Incorrect — modern standard Persian uses the lexical compound تصمیم گرفتن.
✅ دیروز دربارهی سفر تابستانی تصمیم گرفتیم.
diruz darbâre-ye safar-e tâbestâni tasmim gereftim.
Yesterday we decided about the summer trip.
2. Conjugating the nonverbal element
❌ این روش را قبولم کردم.
Incorrect — person marking belongs on کردن, not قبول.
✅ این روش را پس از آزمایش قبول کردم.
in ravesh râ pas az âzmâyesh qabul kardam.
I accepted this method after testing it.
3. Copying a complement frame across synonyms
❌ به شرایط قرارداد پذیرفتیم.
Incorrect — پذیرفتن takes the accepted item as a direct object here.
✅ شرایط قرارداد تازه را پذیرفتیم.
sharâyet-e qarârdâd-e tâze râ paziroftim.
We accepted the terms of the new contract.
4. Calling every simple alternative more formal
⚠️ رفتن همیشه از حرکت کردن محاورهایتر است.
raftan hamishe az harekat kardan mohâvere-i-tar ast.
A grammatical but false generalization: register and meaning are lexical; simple versus compound structure does not rank formality.
✅ قطار ساعت شش حرکت میکند و ما زودتر میرویم.
qatâr sâ'at-e shesh harekat mi-konad va mâ zud-tar mi-ravim.
The train leaves at six, and we are going earlier. (each predicate has its own conventional use)
Key Takeaways
- Prefer the conventional lexical predicate, not a form chosen by word count.
- Compare frequency, register, nuance, argument structure, and collocation.
- Put verbal morphology on the light verb in a compound predicate.
- Learn prepositions and objects with the full predicate.
- Use dictionaries and attested examples to verify alternations pair by pair.
- Never treat Persian-derived simple verbs as inherently superior to established compounds.
