Persian sometimes offers both a one-word verb and a compound predicate for roughly the same situation: رقصیدن / رقص کردن “dance,” آموختن / یاد گرفتن “learn,” and کوشیدن / تلاش کردن “try.” This does not create a free stylistic switch. Some pairs differ mainly in register, some differ in argument structure, and some only overlap in one corner of their meanings.
The practical unit is always the complete predicate. For a simple verb, that unit is an infinitive such as رقصیدن. For a compound verb, it is the nonverbal element plus the light verb, such as یاد گرفتن. English often translates both members of a pair with one verb, but English translation is not evidence that Persian speakers use them in the same contexts. Begin with the principle that a compound verb is one lexical predicate, even though its members are written separately.
Four questions to ask before choosing
| Question | What it reveals | Typical contrast |
|---|---|---|
| Do the meanings actually coincide? | Some apparent pairs overlap only in one sense. | پرسیدن “ask a question” versus درخواست کردن “request” |
| Who is subject and how are other participants marked? | A difference in valency is grammatical, not merely stylistic. | یاد گرفتن has the learner as subject; یاد دادن has the teacher as subject. |
| Which form is usual in this register? | A rarer form may be correct but conspicuous. | گریستن **(literary)** versus گریه کردن **(neutral)** |
| Which form belongs in this collocation? | Established usage can favor one predicate. | از کسی سؤال کردن, but از کسی چیزی خواستن |
These questions are more reliable than the tempting rule “compound verbs are informal and simple verbs are formal.” Modern Persian contains neutral and formal compound verbs, including بررسی کردن “examine” and اعلام کردن “announce,” while very ordinary simple verbs include رفتن “go” and دیدن “see.” The contrast belongs to each lexical pair.
رقصیدن and رقص کردن: substantial overlap
Both رقصیدن and رقص کردن mean “dance.” رقصیدن is a compact, neutral verb used in conversation and writing. رقص کردن is also current, especially in conversational descriptions of the activity and with modifiers naming a kind of dance. Individual speakers and collocations differ in preference; neither form is categorically “the spoken one.”
در جشن همه تا نزدیک نیمهشب رقصیدند.
dar jashn hame tâ nazdik-e nime-shab raqsidand.
At the party, everyone danced until nearly midnight. (neutral)
بچهها وسط اتاق رقص محلی میکردند و میخندیدند.
bachche-hâ vasat-e otâq raqs-e mahalli mi-kardand va mi-khandidand.
The children were doing a local dance in the middle of the room and laughing. (neutral conversational)
This is genuine overlap, but it does not make کردن a universal replacement for the ending ـیدن. Persian has conventional predicates, not an operation that converts every simple verb into a noun plus کردن.
آموختن and یاد گرفتن: register plus argument structure
In present-day Iranian Persian, یاد گرفتن is the everyday default for acquiring a skill, fact, or habit. The learner is the subject and the learned material is normally the direct object. آموختن is common in careful written, formal, and elevated prose. It can mean “learn” with the learner as subject, but it also has a transitive “teach” use in which the teacher is subject. Context and complements therefore matter more than the English gloss.
این روش را از یکی از همکارانم یاد گرفتم.
in ravesh râ az yeki az hamkârân-am yâd gereftam.
I learned this method from one of my colleagues. (neutral everyday Persian)
او موسیقی را نزد استادان قدیم آموخت.
u musiqi râ nazd-e ostâdân-e qadim âmukht.
She learned music from old masters. (formal or literary)
مادربزرگ صبر و قناعت را به ما آموخت.
mâdar-bozorg sabr va qanâ'at râ be mâ âmukht.
Our grandmother taught us patience and contentment. (formal or elevated narrative)
Compare the ordinary causative compound یاد دادن:
همکارم کار با دستگاه را در یک ساعت به من یاد داد.
hamkâr-am kâr bâ dastgâh râ dar yek sâ'at be man yâd dâd.
My colleague taught me how to use the machine in an hour. (neutral)
Thus آموختن cannot simply replace یاد گرفتن without checking who teaches, who learns, and what style the sentence is meant to have.
Shared translations can conceal different predicates
English “ask” covers at least three common Persian patterns. از کسی پرسیدن and از کسی سؤال کردن concern obtaining information. Asking someone for an object or favor instead uses از کسی چیزی خواستن or the more formal درخواست کردن.
از مسئول ایستگاه پرسیدم آخرین قطار چه ساعتی حرکت میکند.
az mas'ul-e istgâh porsidam âkharin qatâr che sâ'ati harekat mi-konad.
I asked the station attendant what time the last train leaves. (neutral)
دانشجو دربارهی منبع آمار سؤال کرد.
dâneshju darbâre-ye manba'-e âmâr so'âl kard.
The student asked about the source of the statistics. (neutral)
برای جابهجایی امتحان از آموزش دانشکده کمک خواستیم.
barâ-ye jâbe-jâyi-ye emtehân az âmuzesh-e dâneshkade komak khâstim.
We asked the faculty administration for help moving the exam. (neutral)
The same warning applies to فهمیدن and درک کردن. Both can translate “understand,” but درک کردن often suggests fuller conceptual comprehension and is frequent in formal exposition; فهمیدن is the unmarked everyday verb and also means “find out.”
Register alternatives are not errors
Some pairs mainly organize the lexicon by style. کوشیدن is formal or literary, whereas تلاش کردن is neutral across speech and writing. گریستن is literary in modern Iranian Persian; گریه کردن is ordinary. زیستن is elevated or academic in many modern contexts, while زندگی کردن is neutral.
پژوهش حاضر میکوشد این تفاوت را توضیح دهد.
pazhuhesh-e hâzer mi-kushad in tafâvot râ towzih dahad.
The present study seeks to explain this difference. (academic)
دارم تلاش میکنم قبل از ساعت شش کار را تمام کنم.
dâram talâsh mi-konam qabl az sâ'at-e shesh kâr râ tamâm konam.
I'm trying to finish the work before six. (neutral conversational)
— هنوز کلاس رقص میروی؟ — آره، تازه رقص آذری هم یاد گرفتهام.
— hanuz kelâs-e raqs mi-ravi? — âre, tâze raqs-e Âzari ham yâd gerefte-am.
— Are you still going to dance class? — Yeah, I've recently learned an Azerbaijani dance too. (informal dialogue; standard written forms representing casual speech)
Common Mistakes
1. Making the teacher the subject of یاد گرفتن
❌ مربی این حرکت را به ما یاد گرفت.
Incorrect — یاد گرفتن makes the learner, not the teacher, its subject.
✅ مربی این حرکت را به ما یاد داد.
morabbi in harekat râ be mâ yâd dâd.
The instructor taught us this move.
2. Inventing a compound by mechanically adding کردن
❌ مهمانها تا دیر وقت رقصیدن کردند.
Incorrect — Persian does not turn the infinitive رقصیدن into a compound by adding کردن.
✅ مهمانها تا دیر وقت رقص کردند.
mehmân-hâ tâ dir vaqt raqs kardand.
The guests danced until late.
3. Using سؤال کردن for a requested benefit
❌ از مدیر یک روز مرخصی سؤال کردم.
Incorrect — the intended act is a request, not a question seeking information.
✅ از مدیر یک روز مرخصی درخواست کردم.
az modir yek ruz morakhkhasi darkhâst kardam.
I requested one day of leave from the manager. (formal-neutral)
4. Conjugating the nonverbal element
❌ ما این نکته را یادیم گرفتیم.
Incorrect — only گرفتن carries person and tense in یاد گرفتن.
✅ ما این نکته را همان روز یاد گرفتیم.
mâ in nokte râ hamân ruz yâd gereftim.
We learned this point that same day.
Key Takeaways
- A simple verb and a compound verb can overlap, but alternation is learned pair by pair.
- Check meaning, argument structure, frequency, collocation, and register before substituting one for the other.
- یاد گرفتن is the everyday learner-subject predicate; آموختن is formal/elevated and can also mean “teach.”
- Treat یاد گرفتن, رقص کردن, and every other compound as a complete lexical predicate.
