Arabic Verbal-Noun Patterns

Formal and everyday Persian contain many action and event nouns historically built in Arabic templates. Recognizing recurrent shapes such as تفعیل، مفاعله، افعال، افتعال، استفعال can make dense vocabulary less arbitrary: تغییر “change,” مذاکره “negotiation,” اعلام “announcement,” انتخاب “selection,” and استفاده “use” belong to different historical families of this kind.

For a modern Persian learner, however, these are Persian lexical items. Speakers do not ordinarily take a Persian verb or an English loan and run it through Arabic derivational rules. The patterns are most valuable for recognition, word-family memory, and educated dictionary use. Each item's current Persian pronunciation, meaning, collocations, and plural must still be learned.

Five high-value recognition patterns

The traditional pattern names represent Arabic consonantal morphology. Actual loanwords can obscure the template because of weak consonants, assimilation, hamza, and Persian sound adaptation. The table therefore gives recognition clusters, not a machine for deriving new forms.

Pattern labelFrequent Persian examplesTypical semantic areaUsual register
تفعیلتغییر، تأیید، تولید، تنظیم، تعمیرcausing, organizing, changing, producingneutral to formal
مفاعلهمذاکره، مقایسه، مشاهده، معاملهinteraction, relation, directed activityneutral to formal
افعالاعلام، اقدام، ارسال، اصلاح، اخراجcausing, initiating, sending, declaringespecially formal; many everyday items
افتعالانتخاب، اعتراض، ارتباط، اختلاف، احتمالevent, stance, relation, resultneutral to formal
استفعالاستفاده، استخدام، استقبال، استعلام، استعفاseeking, taking, using, institutional actionneutral to formal

The broad historical meanings in the third column are only tendencies. استفاده no longer feels to Persian speakers like a transparently compositional Arabic request-form; it is simply the ordinary noun used in استفاده کردن “to use.” Likewise, احتمال means “possibility/probability,” not an action that a learner can calculate from the template alone.

Persian pronunciation, not reconstructed Arabic

Loanword pronunciation reflects Iranian Persian. Learners say تغییر taghyir, مذاکره mozâkere, اعلام e'lâm, انتخاب entekhâb, and استفاده estefâde. The written pattern label does not supply all these vowels, and Classical Arabic case endings are not pronounced.

تغییر برنامه را صبح به همه اعلام کردند.

taghyir-e barnâme râ sobh be hame e'lâm kardand.

They announced the schedule change to everyone this morning. (formal-neutral)

پس از چند ساعت مذاکره، دو طرف به توافق رسیدند.

pas az chand sâ'at mozâkere, do taraf be tavâfoq residand.

After several hours of negotiation, the two sides reached an agreement. (formal)

برای استفاده از این دستگاه ابتدا راهنما را بخوانید.

barâ-ye estefâde az in dastgâh ebtedâ râhnomâ râ bekhânid.

To use this device, first read the instructions. (formal instruction)

English spelling may tempt learners toward an Arabic-oriented transliteration or stress pattern. Course romanization instead records the established Persian word. The consonantal pattern is an etymological map, not a pronunciation guide.

💡
Learn the pattern label visually, but learn the vowels from the Persian word itself. استفاده is estefâde because that is its Iranian Persian pronunciation, not because every استفعال word has an identical surface vowel sequence.

From an action noun to a Persian predicate

These items are nouns. They can take ezâfe, a determiner, plural marking, را, or a preposition. To express a finite event, Persian commonly combines them with a light verb: تغییر کردن “to change,” تغییر دادن “to change something,” اعلام کردن “to announce,” استفاده کردن از “to use,” انتخاب کردن “to choose.” Tense, person, negation, and mood appear on the light verb.

شرکت زمان تحویل سفارش را تغییر داد.

sherkat zamân-e tahvil-e sefâresh râ taghyir dâd.

The company changed the order's delivery time. (formal-neutral)

هنوز استفاده از این نرم‌افزار را تأیید نکرده‌اند.

hanuz estefâde az in narm-afzâr râ ta'yid nakarde-and.

They have not yet approved the use of this software. (formal)

هیئت‌مدیره تصمیم گرفت مدیر تازه‌ای استخدام کند.

hey'at-modire tasmim gereft modir-e tâze-i estekhdâm konad.

The board decided to hire a new manager. (formal)

The nonverbal element can also retain nominal independence, as in استفاده از نرم‌افزار “use of the software.” This flexibility explains why Persian formal prose can be nominally dense. The compound verb foundations page shows how the noun and light verb form one lexical predicate without becoming one written word.

Word families help—but meanings diverge

Related consonants can provide a useful memory network. Around historical ن‌ظ‌م, Persian has نظم “order,” تنظیم “arrangement/adjustment,” منظم “organized,” and نظام “system.” A reader who recognizes the family can make an informed first guess in academic prose.

تنظیم دقیق دما برای این آزمایش ضروری است.

tanzim-e daqiq-e damâ barâ-ye in âzmâyesh zaruri ast.

Precise temperature control is essential for this experiment. (academic)

فهرست را بر اساس تاریخ مرتب و منظم کردند.

fehrest râ bar asâs-e târikh morattab va monazzam kardand.

They arranged the list neatly by date. (formal-neutral)

The network does not guarantee synonymy. نظام can refer to a system or political order; نظم can mean orderliness or verse; تنظیم can mean adjustment, arrangement, drafting, or regulation depending on its complement. Historical kinship guides recognition, while collocation determines modern meaning.

Plurals: inherited forms are lexical choices

Many verbal nouns have a common Arabic-origin plural in ـات: تغییرات “changes,” اصلاحات “reforms/corrections,” اقدامات “measures/actions,” مذاکرات “negotiations,” انتخابات “elections.” These plurals are conventional Persian words, not the output of a rule that safely attaches ـات to every action noun.

تغییرات نسخه‌ی جدید در پایان گزارش آمده است.

taghyirât-e noskhe-ye jadid dar pâyân-e gozâresh âmade ast.

The changes in the new version are listed at the end of the report. (formal)

نتیجه‌ی انتخابات تا نیمه‌شب مشخص نشد.

natije-ye entekhâbât tâ nime-shab moshakhkhas nashod.

The election result was not clear until midnight. (news/formal)

Plural meaning can specialize. Singular انتخاب is “choice/selection,” whereas انتخابات conventionally denotes an election or elections. Persian ـها remains possible for many countable senses—ارسال‌ها “shipments/sends,” for example—but register and collocation decide what sounds natural. 💡
Memorize انتخابات and اقدامات as Persian plural vocabulary. Do not treat ـات as a suffix you can attach to any noun that looks Arabic.

Why fake derivations fail

An Arabic root-and-template analysis belongs to the history of these loans and remains relevant to specialist vocabulary, but it is not an everyday Persian word-building procedure. A hypothetical item can be formally imaginable in Arabic yet absent from Persian, or present in Persian with an unpredictable meaning. Iranian speakers normally coin transparent compounds, use productive Persian affixes, or extend an established light-verb construction.

This limitation is worth stating plainly: there is no reliable shortcut from three consonants to an acceptable modern Persian word. Use the patterns to parse unfamiliar formal vocabulary, then confirm the item and its collocations in a Persian dictionary or corpus.

Common Mistakes

1. Using an action noun as a finite verb

❌ شرکت قیمت را تغییر.

Incorrect — تغییر is a noun here; a finite predicate needs a light verb.

✅ شرکت قیمت خدمات را تغییر داد.

sherkat qeymat-e khedmât râ taghyir dâd.

The company changed the price of the services. (formal-neutral)

2. Inventing a template word from a Persian base

❌ برای رایانه یک ترایین ساختم.

Incorrect — an imagined Arabic-pattern form cannot be derived from Persian رایانه.

✅ برای رایانه یک پایه‌ی تازه ساختم.

barâ-ye râyâne yek pâye-ye tâze sâkhtam.

I made a new stand for the computer. (neutral)

3. Giving every verbal noun an ـات plural

❌ استفادهات کاربران ثبت شد.

Incorrect — this is not the established plural spelling or normal expression.

✅ موارد استفاده‌ی کاربران در گزارش ثبت شد.

mavâred-e estefâde-ye kârbarân dar gozâresh sabt shod.

The users' use cases were recorded in the report. (formal)

4. Assuming family members have interchangeable meanings

⚠️ نظام اتاق را مرتب کردم.

nezâm-e otâq râ morattab kardam.

Grammatically parseable, but not idiomatic for tidying a room — نظام normally denotes a system or institutional order.

✅ پیش از رسیدن مهمان‌ها، اتاق را مرتب کردم.

pish az residan-e mihmân-hâ, otâq râ morattab kardam.

I tidied the room before the guests arrived. (neutral)

Key Takeaways

  • The five patterns are recognition frames for inherited vocabulary, not productive Persian derivational rules.
  • Persian pronunciation and lexical meaning must be learned for each word; pattern labels do not supply all vowels or senses.
  • Action nouns enter Persian noun syntax and commonly form finite predicates with light verbs.
  • Word families support memory, but centuries of semantic development prevent mechanical translation.
  • Plurals such as تغییرات، اقدامات، مذاکرات، انتخابات are lexical items; never generate ـات blindly.
