Arabic Elatives and Relational Forms

Persian inherited a set of Arabic افعل forms historically associated with comparative or superlative meaning: اکثر “most/the majority,” اهم “more/most important,” افضل “superior/preferable,” and اشد “most severe.” It also contains a very large layer of relational adjectives in ی, including علمی “scientific,” اقتصادی “economic,” and قانونی “legal.” Both layers are fully embedded in Persian syntax, but their productivity is very different.

The افعل inventory is lexical and often formal or frozen. Learners should recognize individual words and constructions, not convert ordinary adjectives into imagined Arabic elatives. Relational ی, by contrast, is broadly productive in Persian, including with Persian bases. Its historical connection with Arabic nisba forms does not make its modern grammar Arabic: Persian adjectives have no gender or number agreement and follow Persian ezâfe order.

Lexical elatives in افعل

The Arabic label “elative” covers a form historically capable of comparative and superlative readings. In Persian, each borrowed word developed its own distribution. Some function as quantifiers, some survive in institutional phrases, and some compete with transparent Persian ـتر / ـترین forms.

اکثر دانشجوها نسخه‌ی الکترونیکی کتاب را ترجیح دادند.

aksar-e dâneshju-hâ noskhe-ye elektroniki-ye ketâb râ tarjih dâdand.

Most students preferred the electronic version of the book. (neutral-formal)

اهم نکات جلسه در یک صفحه خلاصه شده است.

ahamm-e nokât-e jalse dar yek safhe kholâse shode ast.

The most important points from the meeting have been summarized on one page. (formal)

دادستان برای متهم درخواست اشد مجازات کرد.

dâdsetân barâ-ye mottaham darkhâst-e ashadd-e mojâzât kard.

The prosecutor requested the maximum penalty for the defendant. (legal/formal)

These examples do not instantiate one freely productive Persian paradigm. اکثر behaves much like a quantifier and normally links to its noun: اکثرِ دانشجوها. اهم is common in headings and summaries. اشد مجازات is a legal collocation. Substituting their consonants or inventing a matching form from جدید “new” would not produce Persian.

💡
When an افعل form is frequent, learn its whole frame: اکثرِ مردم, اهمِ نکات, اشدِ مجازات. The frame is more useful than the historical formula.

Persian comparison is the productive default

Modern Persian normally forms comparison with ـتر and ـترین: مهم‌تر “more important,” مهم‌ترین “most important,” بهتر “better,” بهترین “best.” These are the forms speakers reach for in ordinary conversation and transparent prose. An inherited elative can sound more official, compressed, or formulaic.

این مسئله از هزینه‌ی اولیه مهم‌تر است.

in mas'ale az hazine-ye avvaliye mohemm-tar ast.

This issue is more important than the initial cost. (neutral)

مهم‌ترین مسئله این است که آب کافی نداریم.

mohemm-tarin mas'ale in ast ke âb-e kâfi nadârim.

The most important issue is that we do not have enough water. (neutral)

در گزارش رسمی، فقط اهم یافته‌ها ذکر شد.

dar gozâresh-e rasmi, faqat ahamm-e yâfte-hâ zekr shod.

Only the principal findings were mentioned in the official report. (formal)

English “more/most” may encourage learners to search for a single comparative system. Persian instead has a productive native system plus a limited inherited lexicon. The semantic result can overlap, but register and construction decide the choice. The full productive paradigm appears on Basic Comparative with تر and از.

Relational ی: a category-forming suffix

Relational adjectives classify a noun by field, institution, origin, function, or association. گزارش علمی is a scientific report, سیاست اقتصادی an economic policy, and محدودیت قانونی a legal restriction. The relation is deliberately broad: دانشگاهی can mean “university-related,” “at university level,” or “belonging to a university,” depending on its head.

BaseRelational formTypical phraseRelation
علمعلمیمقاله‌ی علمیfield or method
اقتصاداقتصادیسیاست اقتصادیfield or effect
قانونقانونیمحدودیت قانونیlegal status
ادارهاداریساختمان اداریinstitution or purpose
دانشگاهدانشگاهیمحیط دانشگاهیinstitutional association
فرهنگفرهنگیرویداد فرهنگیdomain or purpose

Some bases and suffixes entered Persian together from Arabic; other formations use Persian bases or were created within Persian. Modern speakers do not need to assign each word to one historical route before using it. They do need to know the established stem and spelling: اداره → اداری is not produced by simply preserving every written letter, while قانون → قانونی is transparent.

این مقاله‌ی علمی برای خواننده‌ی غیرمتخصص هم روشن است.

in maqâle-ye elmi barâ-ye khânande-ye gheyr-e motekhasses ham rowshan ast.

This scientific article is clear even to a nonspecialist reader. (academic-neutral)

تصمیم تازه پیامدهای اقتصادی گسترده‌ای دارد.

tasmim-e tâze payâmad-hâ-ye eqtesâdi-ye gostarde-i dârad.

The new decision has broad economic consequences. (formal)

بدون مجوز قانونی نمی‌توان این بنا را تخریب کرد.

bedun-e mojavvez-e qânuni nemi-tavân in benâ râ takhrib kard.

This building cannot be demolished without legal authorization. (formal)

Persian syntax: ezâfe and no agreement

A relational adjective normally follows the head noun through ezâfe. The suffix does not encode masculine, feminine, singular, or plural. پژوهشگر علمی is unusual semantically because researchers are more naturally described as پژوهشگر in a particular field, but whenever علمی does modify a noun, its form stays constant. Compare گزارش علمی and گزارش‌های علمی.

گزارش‌های مالی شرکت هنوز منتشر نشده‌اند.

gozâresh-hâ-ye mâli-ye sherkat hanuz montasher nashode-and.

The company's financial reports have not yet been published. (formal)

دو کارشناس ایرانی در نشست آنلاین شرکت کردند.

do kârshenâs-e irâni dar neshast-e ânlâyn sherkat kardand.

Two Iranian experts participated in the online meeting. (neutral-formal)

No plural appears on علمی or ایرانی. After a numeral, کارشناس also remains morphologically singular. Arabic gender agreement such as a feminine relational ending has no place in standard Persian. For the wider system, see Relational Adjectives in ی.

When a relational adjective becomes scalar

Relational adjectives are normally classifying: a permit is legal or it is not, and a financial report belongs to a domain. Context can reinterpret some as qualitative. علمی‌تر may mean “more scientific in method,” and ایرانی‌تر may mean “more characteristically Iranian,” not “possessing a greater nationality.” The Persian comparative attaches to the complete relational adjective.

نسخه‌ی دوم مقاله از نظر روش‌شناسی علمی‌تر است.

noskhe-ye dovvom-e maqâle az nazar-e ravesh-shenâsi elmi-tar ast.

The second version of the article is more scientific in its methodology. (academic)

This is semantic coercion, not agreement or Arabic elative morphology. Many relational adjectives resist it unless a meaningful scale is available. اداری‌تر can mean “more bureaucratic/administrative in character,” but it does not make an office more literally an administration.

💡
A ی adjective starts as a classifier. Add ـتر only when context supplies a genuine scale such as rigor, style, or characteristic resemblance.

Common Mistakes

1. Generating a new افعل form from an ordinary adjective

❌ این نسخه اجدد است.

Incorrect — Persian does not derive an افعل elative from جدید in this way.

✅ این نسخه از فایل قبلی جدیدتر است.

in noskhe az fâyl-e qabli jadid-tar ast.

This version is newer than the previous file. (neutral)

2. Forcing اهم into the ordinary comparative frame

⚠️ این نکته اهم از بقیه است.

in nokte ahamm az baqiye ast.

Grammatical but distinctly formal and marked — neutral comparison normally uses مهم‌تر از.

✅ این نکته از بقیه مهم‌تر است.

in nokte az baqiye mohemm-tar ast.

This point is more important than the others. (neutral)

3. Copying English adjective-before-noun order

❌ یک علمی مقاله پیدا کردم.

Incorrect neutral word order — the relational adjective follows its noun through ezâfe.

✅ یک مقاله‌ی علمی تازه پیدا کردم.

yek maghâle-ye elmi-ye tâze peydâ kardam.

I found a new scientific article. (neutral-formal)

4. Importing Arabic gender into Persian

❌ سیاست اقتصادیة تازه اعلام شد.

Incorrect Persian — اقتصادی does not take an Arabic feminine ending.

✅ سیاست اقتصادی تازه امروز اعلام شد.

siyâsat-e eqtesâdi-ye tâze emruz e'lâm shod.

The new economic policy was announced today. (formal)

5. Inserting از after اکثر

❌ اکثر از کارکنان موافق بودند.

Incorrect in the standard partitive frame — اکثر links directly to the noun phrase.

✅ اکثر کارکنان با پیشنهاد تازه موافق بودند.

aksar-e kârkonân bâ pishnehâd-e tâze movâfeq budand.

Most employees agreed with the new proposal. (formal-neutral)

Key Takeaways

  • Borrowed افعل elatives form a limited lexical inventory with item-specific meanings and registers.
  • Productive Persian ـتر / ـترین is the normal way to build transparent comparisons and superlatives.
  • Relational ی classifies a noun by domain or association and is widely productive in Persian.
  • Both borrowed elatives and relational adjectives obey Persian ezâfe, word order, and nonagreement.
  • Never impose Arabic gender or case, and never fabricate a new elative merely because its historical template is recognizable.
