Persian suffix ی -i derives many relational adjectives: ایرانی “Iranian,” دانشگاهی “university/academic,” دولتی “state/governmental,” and چوبی “wooden.” Unlike a qualitative adjective such as بزرگ “big,” a relational adjective primarily places its noun in a class: origin, institution, field, material, purpose, or association.
English often puts a bare noun before another noun—government policy, university library, wood table. Persian commonly expresses the same relation with a postnominal adjective in ی, linked to the head by ezâfe: سیاست دولتی, کتابخانهی دانشگاهی, میز چوبی. Persian can also use a noun possessor, but that alternative does not always mean the same thing.
Form and spelling
The broad pattern is noun base + ی, but the written result depends on the end of the base. The derived word must be learned as a lexical item; it is unsafe to append one visible ی mechanically to every spelling.
| Base | Relational adjective | Reading | Typical relation |
|---|---|---|---|
| ایران | ایرانی | irâni | national/origin |
| دولت | دولتی | dowlati | institutional |
| دانشگاه | دانشگاهی | dâneshgâhi | institution or level |
| چوب | چوبی | chubi | material |
| اروپا | اروپایی | orupâyi | geographical/cultural |
| دانشجو | دانشجویی | dâneshjuyi | associated with students |
| فرهنگ | فرهنگی | farhangi | field or institution |
After a consonant, the suffix is normally straightforward: ایران → ایرانی. After final ا or و, the spelling shows the glide/suffix sequence in forms such as اروپایی and دانشجویی. Other families have lexical stem changes—compare خانه → خانگی—so analogy has limits.
National and geographical relations
Nationality adjectives follow the noun and take ezâfe: نویسندهی ایرانی, شرکت فرانسوی, معماری اروپایی. They do not agree with the noun and do not require capitalization; Persian script has no upper-case distinction.
یک نویسندهی ایرانی در نشست سخنرانی کرد.
yek nevisande-ye irâni dar neshast sokhanrâni kard.
An Iranian writer spoke at the session. (neutral standard)
این موزه مجموعهی بزرگی از هنر آسیایی دارد.
in muze majmu'e-ye bozorgi az honar-e âsiyâyi dârad.
This museum has a large collection of Asian art. (formal-neutral)
سبک اروپایی این ساختمان از دور پیداست.
sabk-e orupâyi-ye in sâkhtemân az dur peydâst.
The European style of this building is evident from a distance.
In the third example, اروپایی itself carries ezâfe before این ساختمان. An adjective can be relational and still continue an ezâfe chain.
Institutional, field, and purpose relations
Modern formal Persian productively uses relational adjectives to classify policies, reports, services, and activities: سیاست آموزشی, گزارش مالی, خدمات شهری, پژوهش پزشکی. This is especially common in (formal), (academic), and bureaucratic prose, though many individual combinations are ordinary in speech too.
بودجهی آموزشی مدرسه امسال افزایش یافت.
budje-ye âmuzeshi-ye madrese emsâl afzâyesh yâft.
The school's education budget increased this year. (formal)
نتیجهی آزمایش پزشکی فردا آماده میشود.
natije-ye âzmâyesh-e pezeshki fardâ âmâde mi-shavad.
The medical test result will be ready tomorrow. (neutral standard)
برای این محله یک مرکز فرهنگی ساختهاند.
barâ-ye in mahalle yek markaz-e farhangi sâkhte-and.
They have built a cultural center for this neighborhood. (neutral standard)
The suffix does not have one English translation. آموزشی can be “educational,” “training,” or “related to education,” depending on its head noun. The relation is underspecified; shared knowledge supplies the most plausible connection.
Material relations
Material adjectives are common with manufactured objects: میز چوبی “wooden table,” ظرف فلزی “metal container,” کیسهی پارچهای “cloth bag.” They describe what something is made of or characteristically contains, rather than possession.
میز چوبی کنار پنجره را خریدم.
miz-e chubi-ye kenâr-e panjare râ kharidam.
I bought the wooden table by the window.
غذا را در ظرف فلزی گرم نکن.
ghazâ râ dar zarf-e felezi garm nakon.
Do not heat the food in a metal container. (neutral instruction)
برای خرید یک کیسهی پارچهای همراه آوردم.
barâ-ye kharid yek kise-ye pârche-i hamrâh âvardam.
I brought a cloth bag for shopping.
Forms after silent ه may contain های as part of the derived adjective, as in پارچهای. Do not confuse that spelling with the ezâfe linker هی in کیسهی پارچهای: the head کیسه takes visible ezâfe, while پارچهای is the relational adjective.
Relational adjective versus noun possessor
Compare سیاست دولت siyâsat-e dowlat “the government's policy” with سیاست دولتی siyâsat-e dowlati “state/governmental policy.” A noun possessor points toward an entity that owns, issues, or controls the head. A relational adjective classifies the kind of policy and need not identify one particular government.
سیاست دولت دربارهی مالیات تغییر کرد.
siyâsat-e dowlat darbâre-ye mâliyât taghyir kard.
The government's policy on taxation changed. (a possessor/source noun)
کمک دولتی برای این طرح کافی نیست.
komak-e dowlati barâ-ye in tarh kâfi nist.
Government assistance is not sufficient for this project. (classifying relation)
English noun-noun compounds can hide this distinction. Persian offers both structures, but the choice reflects whether the second element identifies an entity or classifies a type.
Stacking relational and qualitative adjectives
Relational adjectives are usually close to the head because they define a subtype; descriptive evaluations tend to follow farther to the right. گزارش مالی دقیق naturally means “accurate financial report.” Reversing the adjectives is not always impossible, but it can shift grouping or sound marked.
گزارش مالی دقیق را تا ظهر فرستادند.
gozâresh-e mâli-ye daqiq râ tâ zohr ferestâdand.
They sent the accurate financial report by noon. (relational adjective before qualitative adjective)
دانشگاه یک برنامهی پژوهشی تازه راهاندازی کرد.
dâneshgâh yek barnâme-ye pazhuheshi-ye tâze râh-andâzi kard.
The university launched a new research program. (formal-neutral)
Dense formal chains can become hard to parse. Heavy Noun Phrases and Rightward Weight explains when a clause or restructuring is clearer.
Limited gradability and coerced readings
Nationality and material are normally classifying, so ordinary degree modification is odd: something is not literally “very wooden” or “more Iranian” by citizenship. Yet speakers can deliberately coerce a qualitative reading. این طرح خیلی ایرانی است can mean “This design feels very characteristically Iranian,” and ایرانیتر can mean “more Iranian in style.” It does not mean “having more nationality.”
طراحی این حیاط خیلی ایرانی است.
tarrâhi-ye in hayât kheyli irâni ast.
The design of this courtyard feels very Iranian. (qualitative reinterpretation; conversational-neutral)
That marked interpretation depends on context. The advanced distinction between scalar and classifying adjectives has its own page.
A short dialogue
برای دفتر میز فلزی میخواهید یا چوبی؟
barâ-ye daftar miz-e felezi mi-khâhid yâ chubi?
For the office, do you want a metal desk or a wooden one? (careful spoken standard)
میز چوبی بهتر است؛ فضای اداری را گرمتر میکند.
miz-e chubi behtar ast; fazâ-ye edâri râ garm-tar mi-konad.
A wooden desk is better; it makes the office space feel warmer.
In the question, چوبی stands alone because the head میز is recoverable. This is adjective ellipsis, not adjective agreement.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English adjective-before-noun order
❌ ایرانی موسیقی را دوست دارم.
Incorrect neutral order — the relational adjective follows its head through ezâfe.
✅ موسیقی ایرانی را دوست دارم.
musiqi-ye irâni râ dust dâram.
I like Iranian music.
2. Omitting attributive ezâfe in speech
❌ میز چوبی کنار در است.
miz chubi kenâr-e dar ast
Incorrect reading for ‘the wooden table’ — میز takes ezâfe before چوبی.
✅ میز چوبی کنار در است.
miz-e chubi kenâr-e dar ast.
The wooden table is beside the door.
3. Appending ی without applying the established word form
❌ معماری اروپای این محله جالب است.
Incorrect derivation and spacing — the established relational adjective is اروپایی.
✅ معماری اروپایی این محله جالب است.
me'mâri-ye orupâyi-ye in mahalle jâleb ast.
The European architecture of this neighborhood is interesting.
4. Making the adjective agree with a plural noun
❌ شرکتهای دولتیها تعطیل شدند.
Incorrect — ها marks the plural noun شرکتها; دولتی remains invariant.
✅ شرکتهای دولتی تعطیل شدند.
sherkat-hâ-ye dowlati ta'til shodand.
The state-owned companies closed.
Key Takeaways
- Relational ی classifies a noun by origin, institution, field, material, purpose, or association.
- The adjective follows its head through ezâfe and remains invariant.
- Suffix spelling varies after consonants and vowels, and some lexical families change their stem.
- A noun possessor identifies an entity; a relational adjective usually defines a type.
- Relational adjectives are normally nongradable, but context can coerce a qualitative reading such as “characteristically Iranian.”
