Not every adjective offers the same kind of scale. سرد “cold” readily combines with خیلی, ـتر, and ـترین because temperatures vary by degree. خالی “empty” names an endpoint, while دولتی “state-run/governmental” normally assigns an entity to a class. Persian can nevertheless reinterpret endpoints and classes as scales when context supplies a measurable dimension. The central editorial task is to distinguish a conventional comparison from a creative but recoverable coercion—and both from empty intensification.
A semantic map
| Adjective type | Unmarked interpretation | Natural degree behavior | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| scalar | position on an open scale | خیلی, کمی, ـتر, ـترین | سرد، گران، دشوار |
| absolute/endpoint | minimum or maximum boundary | کاملا, تقریبا; comparison needs a “closer to endpoint” reading | خالی، کامل، مرده |
| classifying/relational | membership or relation, not degree | normally rejects degree; coercion supplies proportion, resemblance, or prominence | دولتی، پزشکی، چوبی |
These labels describe readings, not permanently sealed word classes. The same adjective can be classifying in one sentence and scalar in another. English does this too: medical report classifies a report, while the language sounds very medical evaluates how much specialized medical character it has. Persian coercion is similar, but individual collocations cannot be translated mechanically.
Scalar adjectives: ordinary grading
Scalar adjectives describe dimensions with multiple possible values. Degree words locate a referent on the scale, and comparative morphology orders two values.
هوا ناگهان خیلی سرد شد.
havâ nâgahân kheyli sard shod.
The weather suddenly became very cold. (neutral standard)
این مسیر از راه قبلی کوتاهتر و امنتر است.
in masir az râh-e qabli kutâh-tar va amn-tar ast.
This route is shorter and safer than the previous one. (neutral standard)
گزارش کمی مبهم است؛ یک مثال دیگر لازم دارد.
gozâresh kami mobham ast; yek mesâl-e digar lâzem dârad.
The report is somewhat vague; it needs another example. (formal-neutral)
خیلی سرد, کمی مبهم, and کوتاهتر need no special reinterpretation. The scale is part of the ordinary lexical meaning. The basic comparative page covers their syntax and ZWNJ spelling.
Even here, degree is contextual. A “very expensive coffee” and a “very expensive apartment” occupy different price ranges. Degree grammar compares against a relevant standard, not a universal number.
Absolute adjectives: an endpoint can still have a path
Absolute adjectives conventionally invoke a boundary. A container is literally خالی when nothing remains; a document is کامل when no required part is missing; a creature is مرده when it is no longer alive. Endpoint modifiers such as کاملا “completely” and تقریبا “almost” fit their logic better than open-scale خیلی.
مخزن کاملا خالی است و باید دوباره پر شود.
makhzan kâmelan khâli ast va bâyad dobâre por shavad.
The tank is completely empty and must be filled again. (neutral standard)
فهرست هنوز کامل نیست؛ نام دو منبع در آن نیست.
fehrest hanuz kâmel nist; nâm-e do manba' dar ân nist.
The list is not complete yet; two sources are missing from it. (formal-neutral)
Yet speakers routinely compare degrees of approximation to an endpoint. کاملتر means that one version includes more of what completeness requires; it does not claim that “complete” logically has degrees under a strict all-or-nothing definition.
نسخهی تازه کاملتر است، چون دو پیوست جدید دارد.
noskhe-ye tâze kâmel-tar ast, chun do peyvast-e jadid dârad.
The new version is more complete because it has two new appendices. (neutral standard; closeness-to-endpoint reading)
Similarly, خالیتر can compare how little material remains, and even مردهتر can occur in deliberately figurative or literary language (“more lifeless”). The latter is marked; a technical report should state the intended measurable property instead.
There is no honest rule saying absolute adjectives can “never” be compared. What matters is whether the context makes a path toward the endpoint salient. Formal editing should reveal that path when precision matters.
Classifying adjectives: category before degree
Classifying adjectives locate a noun in a type or relation: مرکز دولتی “state institution,” گزارش پزشکی “medical report,” میز چوبی “wooden table.” On the default reading, something either bears the relation or it does not. خیلی دولتی cannot simply mean “very state-owned,” and چوبیتر does not automatically mean “made of wood to a greater degree.”
این مرکز دولتی است و بودجهاش را وزارتخانه تأمین میکند.
in markaz dowlati ast va budje-ash râ vezâratkhâne ta'min mi-konad.
This center is state-run, and the ministry funds it. (formal-neutral; classifying)
پزشک گزارش پزشکی بیمار را امضا کرد.
pezeshk gozâresh-e pezeshki-ye bimâr râ emzâ kard.
The doctor signed the patient's medical report. (formal-neutral; classifying)
برای بالکن یک میز چوبی سفارش دادیم.
barâ-ye bâlkon yek miz-e chubi sefâresh dâdim.
We ordered a wooden table for the balcony. (neutral standard; material class)
These adjectives remain postnominal through ezafe just like descriptive adjectives. The difference is semantic, not an alternative word order. Relational adjectives in ی develops their formation.
Semantic coercion: turning a category into a scale
Coercion occurs when context asks a normally categorical expression to support degree. The listener supplies a plausible scale: proportion of material, resemblance to a prototype, prominence of a function, or intensity of an associated style.
لحن بخش دوم گزارش بیش از حد پزشکی است.
lahn-e bakhsh-e dovvom-e gozâresh bish az hadd pezeshki ast.
The tone of the report's second section is excessively medical. (evaluative coercion: too much medical jargon/style)
بحث هرچه جلوتر رفت، سیاسیتر شد.
bahs harche jelow-tar raft, siyâsi-tar shod.
The discussion became more political as it went on. (neutral standard; increasing political prominence)
طراحی این کافه از قبل تجاریتر شده است.
tarrâhi-ye in kâfe az qabl tejâri-tar shode ast.
The design of this café has become more commercial than before. (critical/evaluative)
None of these sentences changes the dictionary forever. پزشکی still classifies a literal medical report; the first example instead grades resemblance to a professional register. The adjective's surrounding noun and discourse activate the new dimension.
Coercion is productive but not limitless. خیلی سهشنبهای “very Tuesday-like” might work in playful language only after speakers construct a shared stereotype of Tuesday. Without such a recoverable scale, the phrase is noise rather than creative grammar.
خیلی incompatibilities and register
خیلی is the ordinary modifier for open scales, but its compatibility is a diagnostic, not a law. خیلی گران is neutral. خیلی پزشکی is marked unless context means “strongly medical in style.” خیلی کامل occurs in conversation, often meaning “very thorough,” but formal prose should decide whether it means تقریبا کامل, کاملا کامل (usually redundant), or simply جامع “comprehensive.”
The same freedom is broader in advertising, humor, and conversation than in academic or legal prose. A slogan may deliberately say a product is “more natural” or “more Iranian” without defining the scale. An analytical report must name the criterion: percentage of domestic components, degree of processing, or source of funding.
Editorial precision
When a coerced adjective is vague, unpack it rather than banning it. Replace این میز چوبیتر است with the exact intended proposition.
در ساخت این میز چوب بیشتری به کار رفته است.
dar sâkht-e in miz chub-e bishtari be kâr rafte ast.
More wood was used in making this table. (formal-neutral; material proportion made explicit)
نقش دولت در این طرح پررنگتر است.
naqsh-e dowlat dar in tarh porrang-tar ast.
The government's role is more prominent in this plan. (formal-neutral; criterion made explicit)
These revisions are not always stylistically superior; سیاسیتر شد may be exactly right in commentary. They are superior when readers need to know which dimension supports the comparison.
Common Mistakes
1. Assuming a coerced adjective has one automatic scale
✅ این میز چوبیتر به نظر میرسد.
in miz chubi-tar be nazar mi-resad.
This table looks more wooden. (valid visual-resemblance reading)
✅ در ساخت میز اول چوب بیشتری به کار رفته است.
dar sâkht-e miz-e avval chub-e bishtari be kâr rafte ast.
More wood was used in making the first table.
2. Confusing evaluative degree with categorical ownership
✅ فضای این اداره خیلی دولتی است.
fazâ-ye in edâre kheyli dowlati ast.
This office feels very governmental or bureaucratic. (valid evaluative coercion)
✅ این شرکت کاملا دولتی است، چون تمام سهامش متعلق به دولت است.
in sherkat kâmelan dowlati ast, chun tamâm-e sehâm-ash mota'alleq be dowlat ast.
This company is wholly state-owned because all its shares belong to the government.
3. Moving a classifying adjective before its noun
❌ یک پزشکی گزارش دریافت کردم.
Incorrect neutral order — classifying adjectives still follow the noun through ezafe.
✅ یک گزارش پزشکی دریافت کردم.
yek gozâresh-e pezeshki daryâft kardam.
I received a medical report.
4. Adding plural agreement to a coerced adjective
❌ بحثها سیاسیترها شدند.
Incorrect — comparison does not make the adjective agree with a plural subject.
✅ بحثها سیاسیتر شدند.
bahs-hâ siyâsi-tar shodand.
The discussions became more political.
Key Takeaways
- Scalar adjectives grade conventionally; absolute adjectives invoke endpoints; classifying adjectives assign types or relations.
- A word can acquire a new scalar reading when context supplies proportion, resemblance, prominence, or closeness to an endpoint.
- خیلی compatibility is evidence, not an infallible test; creative and conversational coercion is broader than formal editorial usage.
- Preserve a compact coerced adjective when its scale is obvious; unpack it when readers need an explicit criterion.
