Productive Modern Suffixes پذیر، خواه، ساز، گین

Modern Persian expands its vocabulary by placing elements such as پذیر، خواه، ساز، گین after a base. They produce words including انعطاف‌پذیر “flexible,” آزادی‌خواه “freedom-seeking,” فیلم‌ساز “filmmaker,” and غمگین “sad.” Calling all four simply “suffixes” is convenient, but it hides an important fact: they do not have equal grammatical freedom.

ـپذیر and ـساز support many transparent modern formations, especially in formal and technical language. ـخواه remains available within a narrower semantic field of desire and advocacy. ـگین is visible in a small set of adjectives but is weakly productive for present-day speakers. Good word formation therefore requires more than attaching a recognizable ending: the base, semantic relation, register, and conventional spelling must all fit.

A map of meanings and productivity

Final elementCore contributionExamplesCurrent productivity
ـپذیرcapable of undergoing, open to, susceptible toانعطاف‌پذیر، آسیب‌پذیر، پیش‌بینی‌پذیرhigh in formal and technical coinage
ـخواهdesiring, seeking, advocatingآزادی‌خواه، صلح‌خواه، عدالت‌خواهmoderate within human stance vocabulary
ـسازmaker of, producer of, causingفیلم‌ساز، مشکل‌ساز، فرهنگ‌سازhigh, but the semantic relation varies
ـگینcharacterized or filled by a stateغمگین، خشمگین، شرمگینlow; chiefly a lexical set

The difference matters in production. A reader can usually understand a well-motivated new ـپذیر technical adjective, but an improvised ـگین adjective will often sound invented or archaizing. English suffixes such as -able, -seeking, -maker, and -ful offer rough translations, never automatic word-building equivalents.

ـپذیر: possibility and susceptibility

ـپذیر historically relates to پذیرفتن “to accept.” In a compound it commonly presents the base as something that a referent can undergo, accommodate, or be affected by. انعطاف‌پذیر is capable of flexing or adapting; آسیب‌پذیر is susceptible to harm; پیش‌بینی‌پذیر is predictable. The orientation is often passive-like, but ـپذیر is an adjective-forming element, not a passive auxiliary.

برنامه‌ی کاری ما انعطاف‌پذیر است و می‌توانیم ساعت جلسه را عوض کنیم.

barnâme-ye kâri-ye mâ en'etâf-pazir ast va mi-tavânim sâ'at-e jalse râ avaz konim.

Our work schedule is flexible, and we can change the meeting time. (neutral-formal)

نتیجه‌ی این آزمایش کاملا پیش‌بینی‌پذیر نبود.

natije-ye in âzmâyesh kâmelan pish-bini-pazir nabud.

The result of this experiment was not completely predictable. (academic)

کودکان در برابر آلودگی هوا آسیب‌پذیرترند.

kudakân dar barâbar-e âludegi-ye havâ âsib-pazir-tar-and.

Children are more vulnerable to air pollution. (formal-neutral)

The base is usually a noun or a nominalized process: پیش‌بینی + پذیر, اندازه‌گیری + پذیر, کنترل + پذیر. A finite form such as می‌فهمد cannot serve as the base. Moreover, formal Persian often prefers قابل + verbal noun, as in قابل اندازه‌گیری “measurable.” The two resources overlap, but established collocation decides which is idiomatic.

💡
Read X‌پذیر as “open or susceptible to X” before choosing an English -able translation. آسیب‌پذیر is “vulnerable,” not literally “damage-able.”

ـخواه: desire, allegiance, and advocacy

ـخواه selects a desired goal, value, or social outcome. It is particularly common in descriptions of people and movements: صلح‌خواه “peace-seeking,” آزادی‌خواه “pro-freedom,” عدالت‌خواه “justice-seeking.” The form can be an adjective or a human noun. It has a formal, political, or ideological flavor; everyday temporary wants are expressed with خواستن, not by creating a ـخواه label.

چند گروه صلح‌خواه بیانیه‌ی مشترکی منتشر کردند.

chand goruh-e solh-khâh bayâniye-ye moshtaraki montasher kardand.

Several peace advocacy groups issued a joint statement. (formal/news)

او در جوانی روزنامه‌نگاری آزادی‌خواه بود.

u dar javâni ruznâme-negâr-i-ye âzâdi-khâh bud.

In his youth, he was a pro-freedom journalist. (formal biographical)

عدالت‌خواهان خواستار بررسی دوباره‌ی پرونده شدند.

edâlat-khâhân khâstâr-e barrasi-ye dobâre-ye parvande shodand.

Justice campaigners called for the case to be reviewed again. (formal/news)

In عدالت‌خواهان, the human plural ـان attaches outside the complete word. This خواه is also distinct from the future auxiliary in خواهد رفت “he/she will go”: compound-final ـخواه does not conjugate and does not predict future time.

ـساز: maker, producer, or cause

ـساز is highly useful because it can name a person or device that makes something and can form an adjective meaning “causing or conducive to X.” فیلم‌ساز is a filmmaker; مشکل‌ساز means problematic or trouble-causing; فرهنگ‌ساز describes something that helps shape culture. The base does not have one fixed argument role, so learners must interpret the whole word in context.

این فیلم‌ساز جوان نخستین اثر بلندش را در شیراز ساخت.

in film-sâz-e javân nokhostin asar-e boland-ash râ dar Shirâz sâkht.

This young filmmaker made her first feature in Shiraz. (neutral-formal)

تأخیر در پرداخت برای شرکت‌های کوچک مشکل‌ساز شده است.

ta'khir dar pardâkht barâ-ye sherkat-hâ-ye kuchek moshkel-sâz shode ast.

The delay in payment has become problematic for small companies. (formal-neutral)

یک گفت‌وگوی شفاف می‌تواند اعتمادساز باشد.

yek goft-o-gu-ye shaffâf mi-tavânad e'temâd-sâz bâshad.

A transparent conversation can build trust. (formal; modern abstract formation)

The last example shows productive extension into abstract public language. Such coinages can be transparent without being equally frequent. تصمیم‌ساز is established in institutional discourse for a person or body that shapes decisions, whereas an ad hoc compound may sound like advertising. Transparency licenses interpretation; usage establishes a word.

💡
With ـساز, test three readings: “maker of X,” “device for making X,” and “causing/promoting X.” Context and established collocation select the right one.

ـگین: property words, not an open slot

In غمگین، خشمگین، شرمگین، اندوهگین, final ـگین helps express being characterized or filled by a feeling or state. These adjectives are current, but the pattern is not freely productive. غمگین is neutral and common; خشمگین is somewhat stronger and common in careful speech and writing; اندوهگین is more (formal/literary); شرمگین is current but elevated beside conversational خجالت‌زده.

از شنیدن خبر تعطیلی کتابخانه واقعا غمگین شدم.

az shenidan-e khabar-e ta'tili-ye ketâb-khâne vâqe'an ghamgin shodam.

I was genuinely sad to hear that the library was closing. (neutral)

مشتری از پاسخ نامناسب پشتیبانی خشمگین بود.

moshtari az pâsokh-e nâmonâseb-e poshtibâni khashmgin bud.

The customer was angry about the support team's inappropriate response. (formal-neutral)

نویسنده با لحنی اندوهگین از شهر کودکی‌اش یاد می‌کند.

nevisande bâ lahni anduhgin az shahr-e kudaki-ash yâd mi-konad.

The writer recalls her childhood city in a sorrowful tone. (literary-critical)

There is no honest rule that turns every emotion noun into a natural ـگین adjective. A learner should produce the established set and use transparent phrases such as پر از هیجان “full of excitement” when no conventional derivative exists.

Spelling and the outer edge

Careful spelling normally marks a visible compound boundary with ZWNJ in انعطاف‌پذیر، پیش‌بینی‌پذیر، آزادی‌خواه، فیلم‌ساز، مشکل‌ساز. Established ـگین words are solid: غمگین، خشمگین، شرمگین. A Latin hyphen is not acceptable Persian spelling, and casual full-space spelling should not be copied into edited text.

Once formed, the word behaves as a single unit. Comparative ـتر and plural ـان / ـها attach outside it: آسیب‌پذیرتر, صلح‌خواهان, فیلم‌سازها. Persian adjectives remain invariant with plural nouns.

ـ این جعبه برای سفر مناسب است؟ ـ بله، سبک و انعطاف‌پذیر است، ولی در برابر گرما آسیب‌پذیر است.

— in ja'be barâ-ye safar monâseb ast? — bale, sabok va en'etâf-pazir ast, vali dar barâbar-e garmâ âsib-pazir ast.

— Is this box suitable for travel? — Yes, it's light and flexible, but it is vulnerable to heat. (careful spoken standard)

Neologisms and editorial judgment

New ـپذیر and ـساز formations succeed when the base is recognizable, the semantic relation is recoverable, and the discourse needs a compact category. Technical and administrative writing favors this compression. Yet comprehensibility does not prove conventionality. Before placing a new formation in a public document, check whether specialist writers use it consistently and whether a plain phrase would be clearer. The wider structural continuum is explained on Compound Adjectives.

ـخواه coinages additionally imply a relatively enduring orientation or advocacy, not a passing wish. ـگین is the least suitable for innovation. This productivity hierarchy is part of competent usage, not mere stylistic preference.

Common Mistakes

1. Attaching ـپذیر to a finite verb

❌ این متن می‌فهم‌پذیر است.

Incorrect base selection — a finite present form cannot serve as the compound base.

✅ این متن برای زبان‌آموزان سطح متوسط قابل فهم است.

in matn barâ-ye zabân-âmuzân-e sath-e motavasset qâbel-e fahm ast.

This text is understandable for intermediate learners. (formal-neutral)

2. Reading compound ـخواه as a future auxiliary

❌ گروه صلح‌خواه یعنی گروهی که در آینده صلح خواهد.

Incorrect — صلح‌خواه describes an orientation toward peace; خواه does not carry future tense here.

✅ این انجمن صلح‌خواه با خشونت مخالف است.

in anjoman-e solh-khâh bâ khoshunat mokhâlef ast.

This peace advocacy association opposes violence. (formal)

3. Assuming every ـساز word names a person

⚠️ مشکل‌ساز یعنی کسی که شغلش ساختن مشکل است.

moshkel-sâz ya'ni kasi ke shoghlash sâkhtan-e moshkel ast.

Grammatical but based on a fanciful literal analysis — مشکل‌ساز normally means ‘causing problems’ and may describe an event, rule, or object.

✅ قطع ناگهانی اینترنت برای جلسه مشکل‌ساز بود.

qat'-e nâgahâni-ye internet barâ-ye jalse moshkel-sâz bud.

The sudden internet outage caused problems for the meeting. (neutral-formal)

4. Treating ـگین as freely productive

❌ بچه از هدیه هیجانگین شد.

Incorrect coinage — هیجانگین is not the ordinary Persian adjective.

✅ بچه با دیدن هدیه خیلی هیجان‌زده شد.

bachche bâ didan-e hediye kheyli heyajân-zade shod.

The child became very excited when she saw the gift. (neutral)

5. Using a Latin hyphen in edited Persian

❌ این طرح انعطاف-پذیر نیست.

Incorrect orthography — Persian uses a ZWNJ, not a visible Latin hyphen.

✅ این طرح به‌اندازه‌ی کافی انعطاف‌پذیر نیست.

in tarh be-andâze-ye kâfi en'etâf-pazir nist.

This plan is not flexible enough. (formal-neutral)

Key Takeaways

  • ـپذیر forms possibility or susceptibility adjectives and is highly productive in technical and formal vocabulary.
  • ـخواه labels enduring desire or advocacy, especially for people and movements; it is not a future marker inside a compound.
  • ـساز can name a maker or express a causative property, so the whole word and context determine its argument relation.
  • ـگین survives in common and literary property adjectives but is not an open modern coinage pattern.
  • Use conventional ZWNJ or solid spelling, and place comparison or plural morphology outside the complete formation.
