Nominalization or Finite Clause?

Formal Persian can present an event as a noun phrase—پس از بررسیِ درخواست “after examination of the application”—or as a finite clause—پس از آنکه کمیته درخواست را بررسی کرد “after the committee examined the application.” Nominalization compresses an event into a stable object of discussion. A finite clause makes person, tense, mood, sequence, and often responsibility easier to see.

Neither is inherently more educated. Academic and administrative prose needs nominalizations for technical concepts, but a chain of event nouns can obscure the argument. Choose according to what readers must track, not according to a blanket preference for “formal” nouns.

The Decision Tree

  1. Is the event already known, repeated, or functioning as a technical topic? A nominalization may package it efficiently.
  2. Must the actor or responsible institution be prominent? Prefer an active finite clause.
  3. Does exact tense, sequence, negation, evidentiality, or modality matter? Prefer a finite clause unless another expression carries it unambiguously.
  4. Is the actor deliberately irrelevant and the process conventional? A nominalization or passive light-verb predicate may fit.
  5. Are two or more long ezâfe chains nested before the main verb? Restore at least one finite clause for readability.
  6. Are you making an accusation or causal claim? Name agents and events explicitly rather than hiding them behind abstract nouns.
ChoiceStrengthTypical cost
nominalizationcompression, topic continuity, technical labelingactor, tense, and modality may disappear
finite active clauseclear agency, chronology, accountabilitylonger; may repeat established participants
passive/impersonal light-verb clauseprocedure or result foregroundedactor backgrounded; bureaucratic density
💡
Nominalization changes information structure, not just word class. It asks the reader to treat an event as a thing that can be discussed, compared, delayed, approved, or caused.

Nominalize Established Events and Technical Processes

Lexical event nouns such as افزایش، کاهش، بررسی، اجرا، تصویب and nominal infinitives such as رسیدن، اعلام نکردن can occupy ordinary noun-phrase positions. This is useful when a report repeatedly refers to one process or relates several measured variables.

افزایش هزینه‌ی حمل‌ونقل بر قیمت نهایی کالا اثر گذاشت.

afzâyesh-e hazine-ye haml-o-naql bar qeymat-e nahâyi-ye kâlâ asar gozâsht.

The increase in transportation costs affected the final price of the goods. (academic; the increase is the topic)

مقایسه‌ی نتایج دو گروه تفاوت معناداری نشان نداد.

moqâyese-ye natâyej-e do goruh tafâvot-e ma'nâdâri neshân na-dâd.

Comparison of the results of the two groups showed no significant difference. (academic; a named analytical operation)

Here the events are conceptual units in an argument. Replacing every one with a finite clause can make the prose repetitive. The structural resources are described on Nominalization instead of Subordination; this page decides when to use them.

Choose a Finite Clause for Visible Agency

An event noun does not inherently say who performed the action. Ezâfe can link an actor or affected participant, but its semantic role depends on the noun. بررسیِ کارشناس can mean “the expert's examination” or, in another context, “examination of the expert.” A finite active clause assigns roles directly.

کمیته درخواست را بررسی کرد و سه مدرک دیگر خواست.

komite darkhâst râ barrasi kard va se madrak-e digar khâst.

The committee reviewed the application and requested three more documents. (formal-neutral; actor and sequence explicit)

مدیران تغییرات را دیر اعلام کردند و کارکنان فرصت آماده شدن نداشتند.

modirân taghyirât râ dir e'lâm kardand va kârkonân forsat-e âmâde shodan na-dâshtand.

The managers announced the changes late, and the employees had no time to prepare. (plain formal; responsibility explicit)

Compare the second with اعلام دیرهنگام تغییرات موجب کاهش فرصت آمادگی شد. That nominal version is compact, but it recasts people and decisions as abstract conditions. Use it only if that rhetorical distance is intended.

💡
When a sentence could affect blame, credit, rights, or obligations, the active question “who did what?” is not a stylistic detail. Finite syntax often provides the fairest answer.

Preserve Time, Mood, and Negation

A finite verb locates an event and can mark whether it is asserted, desired, possible, or contrary to fact. A bare nominalization lacks those distinctions. Prepositions such as پس از, frames such as در صورت, and negative عدم can restore some relations, but not always all of them.

اگر شورا بودجه را تصویب کند، مرحله‌ی دوم آغاز خواهد شد.

agar shurâ budje râ tasvib konad, marhale-ye dovvom âghâz khâhad shod.

If the council approves the budget, the second phase will begin. (formal-neutral; prospective condition explicit)

در صورت تصویب بودجه، مرحله‌ی دوم آغاز خواهد شد.

dar surat-e tasvib-e budje, marhale-ye dovvom âghâz khâhad shod.

If the budget is approved, the second phase will begin. (formal/administrative; actor backgrounded)

The nominal version does not say who approves the budget. It may suit a procedure whose decision-maker is already fixed; it is weaker when institutional responsibility is disputed.

چون دبیرخانه نتیجه را اعلام نکرده بود، متقاضی اعتراض کرد.

chun dabirkhâne natije râ e'lâm na-karde bud, motaqâzi e'terâz kard.

Because the secretariat had not announced the result, the applicant objected. (formal-neutral; past perfect and agent visible)

Passive Light Verbs: Procedure Without a Salient Actor

Formal Persian often pairs an event noun with شدن، انجام شدن، صورت گرفتن، قرار گرفتن: تصمیم گرفته شد، بررسی انجام شد، پیشنهاد مطرح شد. Only the verbal part carries tense and agreement. These constructions foreground an institutional act or result; they are useful when the actor is generic, already known, or genuinely irrelevant.

در نشست امروز سه پیشنهاد تازه مطرح شد.

dar neshast-e emruz se pishnehâd-e tâze matrah shod.

Three new proposals were raised at today's meeting. (formal-neutral; proposals foregrounded)

پس از دریافت مدارک، بررسی اولیه انجام می‌شود.

pas az daryâft-e madârek, barrasi-ye avvaliyye anjâm mi-shavad.

After the documents are received, an initial review is carried out. (administrative; routine procedure)

Do not assume every شدن compound is a grammatical passive. آغاز شدن can describe an inchoative event, while بررسی شدن has a clearer passive relation to بررسی کردن. Learn each predicate and test whether a corresponding active agent is meaningful.

Readability: Break Long Nominal Chains

Nominalization concentrates information through ezâfe. One or two familiar packages can help readers; several new packages nested together make them hold too many unresolved relationships before reaching the main verb.

اعلام تصمیم هیئت درباره‌ی تعویق اجرای برنامه پس از بررسی پیامدها انجام شد.

e'lâm-e tasmim-e hey'at darbâre-ye ta'viq-e ejrâ-ye barnâme pas az barrasi-ye payâmad-hâ anjâm shod.

The announcement of the board's decision about postponing the program's implementation occurred after review of the consequences. (dense bureaucratic prose)

هیئت پیامدها را بررسی کرد و سپس اعلام کرد که اجرای برنامه را به تعویق می‌اندازد.

hey'at payâmad-hâ râ barrasi kard va sepas e'lâm kard ke ejrâ-ye barnâme râ be ta'viq mi-andâzad.

The board reviewed the consequences and then announced that it would postpone the program's implementation. (clear formal revision)

The revision restores an actor, chronology, and the content of the announcement. It retains one useful nominalization, اجرای برنامه, instead of banning nouns altogether.

Minimal Contrast

پس از رد درخواست، نامه‌ی اعتراض ارسال شد.

pas az radd-e darkhâst, nâme-ye e'terâz ersâl shod.

After the application was rejected, a letter of objection was sent. (formal; both actors suppressed)

اداره درخواست را رد کرد و متقاضی نامه‌ی اعتراض فرستاد.

edâre darkhâst râ radd kard va motaqâzi nâme-ye e'terâz ferestâd.

The agency rejected the application, and the applicant sent a letter of objection. (plain formal; responsibility explicit)

These are not merely long and short versions. They make different claims about which participants deserve grammatical prominence.

Two Ambiguous Contexts, Resolved Aloud

A procedure manual

If every reader knows which office conducts the routine review, پس از بررسی مدارک keeps attention on the workflow. Repeating the office as subject in each step is unnecessary.

An investigative report

If the question is why a warning was ignored, بررسی نشدن هشدار is too evasive. Name the responsible body and use a finite verb.

گروه ایمنی هشدار را بررسی نکرد، هرچند سه روز پیش آن را دریافت کرده بود.

goruh-e imani hoshdâr râ barrasi na-kard, har-chand se ruz pish ân râ daryâft karde bud.

The safety team did not examine the warning, although it had received it three days earlier. (formal; agency and chronology explicit)

Common Mistakes

1. Treating nominalization as automatically more formal and better

⚠️ افزایش تعداد اسم‌ها همیشه متن را علمی‌تر می‌کند.

afzâyesh-e te'dâd-e esm-hâ hamishe matn râ elmi-tar mi-konad.

A grammatical but false generalization: excessive nominal density can obscure the argument.

✅ متن علمی باید رابطه‌ی میان ادعاها را روشن نشان دهد.

matn-e elmi bâyad râbete-ye miyân-e edde'â-hâ râ rowshan neshân dahad.

Academic prose must show the relationship among its claims clearly.

2. Leaving semantic roles ambiguous

⚠️ بررسی مدیر دو ساعت طول کشید.

barrasi-ye modir do sâ'at tul keshid.

Grammatical but ambiguous: it can suggest that the manager examined something or was examined.

✅ مدیر پرونده را در دو ساعت بررسی کرد.

modir parvande râ dar do sâ'at barrasi kard.

The manager reviewed the file in two hours.

3. Stacking incompatible institutional predicates

❌ گزارش نهایی مورد ارزیابی انجام شد.

Incorrect — مورد ارزیابی قرار گرفت and ارزیابی شد/انجام شد are different frames.

✅ پیشنهاد در جلسه‌ی بعد مورد بررسی قرار می‌گیرد.

pishnehâd dar jalase-ye ba'd mowred-e barrasi qarâr mi-girad.

The proposal will be reviewed at the next meeting. (formal)

4. Removing finite tense where sequence matters

❌ پس از تصمیم شورا گزارش ارسال.

Incorrect — the sentence lacks a finite main predicate and leaves the sequence incomplete.

✅ پس از آنکه شورا تصمیم گرفت، دبیرخانه گزارش را فرستاد.

pas az ânke shurâ tasmim gereft, dabirkhâne gozâresh râ ferestâd.

After the council made its decision, the secretariat sent the report.

Key Takeaways

  • Nominalize established processes, technical concepts, and backgrounded circumstances.
  • Use finite clauses for visible actors, exact chronology, modality, and responsibility.
  • Passive light-verb predicates foreground procedures but may hide agents.
  • Break long ezâfe chains by restoring one or more finite clauses.
  • Judge clarity at sentence level; neither nouns nor clauses are inherently more formal.
  • Ask what the grammar makes prominent—and what it allows the writer to leave unsaid.
