Iranian Persian has developed through sustained contact. Arabic supplied learned and everyday vocabulary; Turkic–Iranian contact has long run both ways; community languages interact locally with Persian; French and English supplied modern international vocabulary. None of this makes Persian a mixture without grammar. Borrowed material is routinely reorganized by Persian plural marking, ezafe, word order, clitics, and light verbs.
This page separates four processes: borrowing imports an item; calquing reproduces a pattern with local material; convergence makes neighboring systems more similar; code-switching alternates languages within an interaction. The same utterance may show more than one process, but origin cannot be diagnosed from appearance alone.
Borrowed words enter Persian structures
این واژه عربی است، اما در این جمله دستور فارسی دارد.
in vâzhe Arabi ast, ammâ dar in jomle dastur-e Fârsi dârad.
This word is Arabic in origin, but it has Persian grammar in this sentence. (academic)
Origin and current grammar answer different questions. Arabic-derived تصمیم combines with Persian light verb گرفتن, accepts Persian ezafe in تصمیم مهم, and takes Persian clitics in تصمیمش. The Arabic verbal-noun patterns page develops this recognition skill; speakers do not switch into Arabic grammar each time they use such a word.
بعد از بحث طولانی تصمیم نهایی را گرفتیم.
ba'd az bahs-e tulâni tasmim-e nehâyi râ gereftim.
After a long discussion, we made the final decision. (neutral standard)
نتیجهی جلسه را فردا اعلام میکنند.
natije-ye jalase râ fardâ e'lâm mi-konand.
They will announce the meeting’s outcome tomorrow. (neutral standard)
Arabic-origin nouns inside these sentences follow Persian ezafe and object marking. Iranica’s survey of Arabic elements in Persian emphasizes that the influence is chiefly lexical while documenting plural forms, frozen phrases, category changes, and Persian reanalysis.
Arabic plurals: borrowed morphology with Persian distributions
Persian retains Arabic broken plurals and ـات plurals for particular lexical items, especially in formal writing: کتب، قوانین، جلسات، اطلاعات. Persian ـها remains productive: کتابها، قانونها، جلسهها. Choice is partly lexical and partly stylistic; it is not a command to reconstruct the donor language’s whole paradigm.
جلسات هیئت در این ماه سه بار برگزار شد.
jalasât-e hey'at dar in mâh se bâr bargozâr shod.
The board’s meetings were held three times this month. (formal administrative Persian)
جلسهها این هفته خیلی طول کشید.
jalase-hâ in hafte kheyli tul keshid.
The meetings ran very long this week. (neutral conversational Persian)
Both are Persian sentences. Inanimate plural agreement may remain singular in many contexts, as برگزار شد / طول کشید does here. Arabic plural shape does not impose Arabic agreement.
برای این واژه هم جمع فارسی رایج است و هم جمع عربی.
barâ-ye in vâzhe ham jam'-e Fârsi râyej ast va ham jam'-e Arabi.
For this word, both a Persian plural and an Arabic plural are current. (academic)
Learn the established Persian distribution. Do not generate an Arabic broken plural for every Arabic-looking noun, and do not call a conventional plural foreign every time a Persian speaker uses it.
Turkic–Iranian contact is long and reciprocal
Persian and Turkic languages have coexisted at courts, in armies, markets, cities, and families. Iranica’s survey of Turkic–Iranian linguistic contacts stresses influence in both directions and distinguishes written Persian from contact-rich spoken settings. Some areal discussions connect indirect-evidential uses of perfect forms across Iranian and Turkic languages, but a shared function does not by itself prove a single borrowing event.
شباهت دو ساخت میتواند از تماس باشد، اما تاریخ هر دو ساخت را باید بررسی کرد.
shabâhat-e do sâkht mi-tavânad az tamâs bâshad, ammâ târikh-e har do sâkht râ bâyad barrasi kard.
The similarity of two constructions may result from contact, but the history of both must be examined. (academic)
در تبریز یک گوینده ممکن است میان فارسی و ترکی جابهجا شود.
dar Tabriz yek guyande momken ast miyân-e Fârsi va Torki jâ-be-jâ shavad.
In Tabriz, a speaker may move between Persian and Turkish. (neutral description of bilingual practice)
That possibility neither characterizes every Tabriz resident nor reduces Azerbaijani to a source of accent features. Bilingual speakers control repertoires and adapt them to audience.
Kurdish, Arabic, and other local contact settings
There is no single “Kurdish influence” or “Arabic influence” across Iran. Kurdish itself comprises several groups; Iranian Arabic has regional varieties; contact intensity differs across neighborhoods, generations, and domains. A feature documented in one Kermanshah village or Khuzestan network cannot be projected onto all speakers.
این ویژگی در گفتار دوزبانههای همین منطقه ثبت شده است.
in vizhegi dar goftâr-e do-zabâne-hâ-ye hamin manteqe sabt shode ast.
This feature has been documented in the speech of bilinguals in this particular region. (academic)
از این داده نمیتوان دربارهی همهی کردزبانان نتیجه گرفت.
az in dâde nemi-tavân darbâre-ye hame-ye Kord-zabânân natije gereft.
This datum cannot support a conclusion about all Kurdish speakers. (academic)
Contact descriptions should report speaker background, setting, comparison variety, and frequency. Otherwise an ordinary Persian variation may be mislabeled as foreign interference.
French loans and English-mediated digital language
French contributed many modern cultural and technical words to Iranian Persian, such as آسانسور and مرسی. Their present use ranges from neutral to informal; origin alone does not determine register. English now supplies much digital and workplace vocabulary. Persian commonly integrates an English noun or stem with کردن and Persian objects or clitics.
فایل را دیشب آپلود کردم و لینکش را فرستادم.
fâyl râ dishab âplud kardam va link-ash râ ferestâdam.
I uploaded the file last night and sent its link. (neutral informal technical Persian)
میشه این پیام رو برام فوروارد کنی؟
mi-she in payâm ro barâm forvârd koni?
Can you forward this message to me? (colloquial Tehran/workplace)
نسخهی تازه را در سامانه بارگذاری کردم.
noskhe-ye tâze râ dar sâmâne bâr-gozâri kardam.
I uploaded the new version to the system. (formal institutional alternative)
The alternatives do not always match pragmatically. بارگذاری suits official interfaces; آپلود may be the unmarked workplace choice. Good editing asks who is speaking and where, not whether every loan can be purged.
Research on English content morphemes in Persian structure finds Persian grammatical material and order organizing many mixed utterances. That is why an English stem can receive a Persian clitic or light verb.
Borrowing, calquing, and code-switching
| Process | Diagnostic | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| borrowing | item is conventional inside Persian | speaker currently knows donor language |
| calque | Persian material reproduces an externally modeled relation | similar wording proves copying |
| convergence | systems become alike through sustained contact | direction is obvious |
| code-switching | speaker alternates identifiable systems | switch is accidental or deficient |
این ترکیب شاید ترجمهی قرضی باشد، ولی برای اثباتش سند تاریخی لازم است.
in tarkib shâyad tarjome-ye qarzi bâshad, vali barâ-ye esbât-ash sanad-e târikhi lâzem ast.
This expression may be a calque, but historical evidence is needed to prove it. (academic)
او برای توضیح اصطلاح تخصصی چند لحظه به انگلیسی رفت.
u barâ-ye towzih-e estelâh-e takhassosi chand lahze be Englisi raft.
They switched to English briefly to explain the technical term. (neutral code-switching description)
Norm judgments are social judgments
Academies, editors, workplaces, and friend groups value forms differently. A mixed technical phrase can be conventional among engineers yet unsuitable in a government notice. Conversely, a prescribed replacement may be correct but unfamiliar in casual speech.
این صورت در گفتوگوی فنی رایج است، اما در گزارش رسمی ویرایش میشود.
in surat dar goft-o-gu-ye fanni râyej ast, ammâ dar gozâresh-e rasmi virâyesh mi-shavad.
This form is common in technical conversation but edited in a formal report.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating Arabic vocabulary as Arabic grammar
⚠️ جملهای که واژهی عربی دارد از دستور عربی پیروی میکند.
jomle-i ke vâzhe-ye Arabi dârad az dastur-e Arabi peyravi mi-konad.
Grammatical, but false: borrowed words can be fully integrated into Persian syntax.
✅ واژهی عربی میتواند صفت، جمع و فعل فارسی بگیرد.
vâzhe-ye Arabi mi-tavânad sefat, jam' va fe'l-e Fârsi begirad.
An Arabic-origin word can take a Persian adjective, plural, and verb.
2. Calling every bilingual feature an error
⚠️ هر تغییر زبان نشان میدهد گوینده هیچ زبانی را خوب بلد نیست.
har taghyir-e zabân neshân mi-dahad guyande hich zabâni râ khub balad nist.
Every language switch shows that the speaker knows no language well. (false deficit judgment)
✅ گویندهی دوزبانه زبان را با توجه به مخاطب عوض کرد.
guyande-ye do-zabâne zabân râ bâ tavajjoh be mokhâtab avaz kard.
The bilingual speaker changed languages in response to the addressee.
3. Claiming contact from one resemblance
⚠️ این دو جمله شبیهاند، پس یکی حتما از دیگری ترجمه شده است.
in do jomle shabih-and, pas yeki hatmâ az digari tarjome shode ast.
These sentences resemble each other, so one must be translated from the other. (unsupported inference)
✅ نخست تاریخ کاربرد و امکان تحول داخلی را بررسی میکنیم.
nokhost târikh-e kârbord va emkân-e tahavvol-e dâkheli râ barrasi mi-konim.
First we examine usage history and the possibility of internal development.
4. Applying one register rule everywhere
⚠️ چون آپلود وامواژه است، هیچ فارسیزبانی نباید آن را بگوید.
chun âplud vâm-vâzhe ast, hich Fârsi-zabâni nabâyad ân râ beguyad.
Because upload is a loanword, no Persian speaker should say it. (prescriptive overreach)
✅ در متن رسمی بارگذاری و در گفتوگوی فنی آپلود ممکن است مناسبتر باشد.
dar matn-e rasmi bâr-gozâri va dar goft-o-gu-ye fanni âplud momken ast monâseb-tar bâshad.
Bârgozâri may suit a formal text, while upload may suit technical conversation better.
Key Takeaways
- Separate borrowing, calquing, convergence, and code-switching.
- Borrowed words commonly take Persian ezafe, plurals, clitics, order, and light verbs.
- Contact is local, reciprocal, and historically layered; one resemblance proves no direction.
- Register determines whether a conventional loan, an official replacement, or a switch fits.
- Produce consistent Iranian Persian while recognizing contact-rich speech without deficit judgments.
