A2 Learner Path

This ten-week A2 route assumes that the A1 Learner Path diagnostic is stable: you can read Arabic script, build basic nominal and verbal sentences, distinguish لا، ما، ليس, and control singular agreement. A2 expands that core rather than replacing it. Script, sound, morphology, and syntax remain interleaved so that every new ending explains text you can already read.

By the end, you should be able to handle sound and broken plurals, human versus nonhuman agreement, numbers through 99, longer iḍāfas, possessive and object clitics, the full regular perfect and imperfect paradigms, positive commands and polite requests, and short formal interactions at a hotel, university, station, or by email. You should also know exactly which irregularities remain for B1.

Entry diagnostic

Before week 1, read and explain these without translating word by word:

عندي موعد في الجامعة، لكن المكتب ليس مفتوحا اليوم.

ʿindī mawʿidun fī l-jāmiʿa(h), lākinna l-maktaba laysa maftūḥan al-yawm.

I have an appointment at the university, but the office is not open today.

هل كتبت الرسالة أم تعمل عليها الآن؟

hal katabta r-risālata ʾam taʿmalu ʿalayhā l-ʾān?

Did you write the message, or are you working on it now? (addressing one man)

You should identify clause type, finite verb, subject, object or predicate, governed prepositional phrase, and time expression. If that analysis is slow, repeat A1 weeks 4–7 before adding more paradigms.

Week 1: repair spelling and connected reading

Study Tanwīn, Tāʾ Marbūṭa, Alif Maqṣūra, and Writing Attached Clitics. Then connect spelling to sound with Sun and Moon Letters and Hamzat al-Waṣl in Connected Speech.

Milestone: dictate ten short phrases containing ة، ى، تنوين, an attached و/ب/ل, and two definite articles. Then read them in connected speech. Strip the vowel marks and confirm that the base letters remain unchanged.

Week 2: plural form and plural agreement

Read Sound Masculine Plural, Sound Feminine Plural, Broken Plurals, and Human and Non-Human Plural Nouns. Then apply Adjectives with Non-Human Plurals and Adjectives with Human Plurals.

هذه كتب جديدة عن تاريخ المدينة.

hādhihi kutubun jadīdatun ʿan tārīkhi l-madīna(h).

These are new books about the city's history.

يعمل المهندسون الجدد في المبنى الشرقي.

yaʿmalu l-muhandisūna l-jududu fī l-mabnā sh-sharqiyy.

The new engineers work in the east building.

Review loop: for ten nouns, record singular, lexical plural, human/nonhuman class, and one agreeing adjective. Do not infer agreement from the plural's shape. Repeat until كتب جديدة and مهندسون جدد require no conscious translation.

Week 3: numbers as governed noun phrases

Work through Numbers 3–10, 11 and 12, 13–19, The Decades, and 21–99. These are separate systems; do not compress them into one slogan about “opposite gender.”

اشتريت ثلاثة كتب جديدة ودفعت خمسة وعشرين دينارا.

ishtaraytu thalāthata kutubin jadīdatin wa-dafaʿtu khamsatan wa-ʿishrīna dīnāran.

I bought three new books and paid twenty-five dinars.

Milestone: read eight prices or quantities, then explain the numeral's gender, case, and the counted noun's number and case. If you can say the number but cannot parse the counted noun, the phrase is not yet learned.

Week 4: longer iḍāfas and attached pronouns

Read Long Iḍāfa Chains, Dual and Sound-Plural Nūn Loss, and Tāʾ Marbūṭa in Iḍāfa. Then study Possessive Suffixes, Direct-Object Suffixes, and Pronoun Suffixes after Prepositions.

أرسلت إليها نسخة من جدول مواعيد المحاضرات.

ʾarsaltu ʾilayhā nuskhatan min jadwali mawāʿīdi l-muḥāḍarāt.

I sent her a copy of the lecture schedule.

Production task: build five three-noun iḍāfas, then replace the final possessor with a pronoun suffix where natural. Read each aloud and release the t of ة inside the construct phrase.

Week 5: control the full regular perfect

Study Regular Perfect Paradigm in Full and Perfect Aspect and Completed Events. Add Past Negation with ما and Past Negation with لم, but treat لم as the first doorway into the jussive rather than pretending its verb is perfect.

كتبنا التقرير وأرسلناه إلى المديرة صباحا.

katabnā t-taqrīra wa-ʾarsalnāhu ʾilā l-mudīrati ṣabāḥan.

We wrote the report and sent it to the director in the morning.

لم يصل القطار بعد، لذلك انتظرنا في المحطة.

lam yaṣili l-qiṭāru baʿd, li-dhālika ntaẓarnā fī l-maḥaṭṭa(h).

The train has not arrived yet, so we waited at the station.

Checkpoint: produce all fourteen perfect cells of one strong verb, but test them inside six short sentences with subjects and objects. Mark where the object suffix follows the subject ending.

Week 6: control the full regular imperfect

Study Regular Indicative Imperfect Paradigm, Imperfect Aspect, and How MSA Expresses Ongoing Events. Add Future with سـ and سوف and Future Negation with لن.

تراجع الموظفات الطلبات الآن، وسيرسلن النتائج غدا.

turājiʿu l-muwaẓẓafātu ṭ-ṭalabāti l-ʾān, wa-sayursilna n-natāʾija ghadan.

The employees are reviewing the applications now and will send the results tomorrow. (all-female group)

At A2, master strong-verb agreement first. Use Assimilated Verbs, Hollow Verbs, and Defective Verbs as optional reference branches for frequent verbs, not as three additional full paradigms in one week.

Week 7: commands, clitics, and polite action

Read Deriving the Imperative, Imperative Gender and Number Forms, Commands with Object Pronouns, and Polite Requests beyond the Bare Imperative. A command must match the addressee; politeness comes from the construction and situation, not a special English-like word please pasted everywhere.

اكتب العنوان هنا ثم أرسل لي صورة الاستمارة من فضلك.

uktubi l-ʿunwāna hunā thumma ʾarsil lī ṣūrata l-istimārati min faḍlik.

Write the address here, then send me a picture of the form, please. (addressing one man)

Speaking task: give a partner four instructions, then reformulate two as هل يمكنك أن...؟ requests. Switch the addressee from one man to one woman and make every imperative ending change.

Review The الذي Relative-Pronoun Paradigm, Definite Relative Clauses, and Indefinite Adjective Clauses. The decisive contrast is definiteness: a definite antecedent normally takes الذي/التي, while an indefinite antecedent normally takes a directly attached descriptive clause.

وصل البريد الذي أرسلته الجامعة صباح أمس.

waṣala l-barīdu lladhī ʾarsalathu l-jāmiʿatu ṣabāḥa ʾams.

The mail that the university sent arrived yesterday morning.

Parsing task: identify the antecedent, relative pronoun, finite verb, subject, and resumptive object in the example. Then make an indefinite version beginning وصل بريد... and remove the relative pronoun.

Weeks 9–10: work through everyday formal genres

Read and perform these texts in order:

  1. At a Hotel Desk — reference, reservation details, and clitics.
  2. University Registration — iḍāfa chains, forms, and documents.
  3. Travel Information — questions, times, prices, and directions.
  4. Email: A Polite Request — an answerable professional request.
  5. Public Notice: Opening Hours and Rules — compact formal instructions and prohibitions.

For each text, complete the same loop: read for gist, mark every finite verb and clitic, parse two dense noun phrases, shadow one paragraph, and rewrite it for a different date, addressee, or institution. This is where paradigms become genre competence.

Final cumulative project

Write two connected artifacts:

  • a 120-word email requesting a change to a hotel or university booking, with a clear subject, identifying detail, polite request, alternative date, and closing;
  • a five-line public notice giving hours, two instructions, one prohibition, and contact information.

Then record a one-minute spoken summary with natural pauses. Use MSA grammar and vocabulary; do not force every final case ending into spontaneous delivery.

Your diagnostic has ten points: correct script (1), plural choice (1), human/nonhuman agreement (1), numeral phrase (1), iḍāfa (1), clitic attachment (1), perfect (1), imperfect (1), addressee-matched command (1), and relative-clause architecture (1). Score 8/10 twice, with no error in script or agreement, before moving to B1. Send each missed category back to its week's review loop.

Recognition-only branches

Common Mistakes

Treating script accuracy as finished after A1

❌ قرأت الرساله وأرسلتها.

Incorrect spelling — the feminine noun رسالة ends in ة, not ه.

✅ قرأت الرسالة وأرسلتها إلى زميلي.

qaraʾtu r-risālata wa-ʾarsaltuhā ʾilā zamīlī.

I read the message and sent it to my colleague.

Memorizing a case ending without its governor

❌ ذهبت إلى الجامعة صباحا.

dhahabtu ʾilā l-jāmiʿata ṣabāḥan

Incorrect pronunciation — إلى governs the genitive.

✅ ذهبت إلى الجامعة صباح اليوم.

dhahabtu ʾilā l-jāmiʿati ṣabāḥa l-yawm.

I went to the university this morning.

Learning a verb paradigm without its preposition

❌ بحثت على موعد القطار.

Incorrect transfer from English — بحث normally takes عن for the object of a search.

✅ بحثت عن موعد القطار في الموقع.

baḥathtu ʿan mawʿidi l-qiṭāri fī l-mawqiʿ.

I searched for the train time on the website.

Silently mixing dialect into MSA production

❌ رح نرسل الملف بكرة.

Incorrect for this path's production target — رح and بكرة switch away from the code being practiced.

✅ سنرسل الملف غدا بعد المراجعة.

sanursilu l-malaffa ghadan baʿda l-murājaʿa(h).

We will send the file tomorrow after review. (MSA)

Advancing before plural agreement is automatic

❌ الكتب الجديدون مفيدة.

Incorrect — nonhuman plural كتب takes feminine singular adjective and predicate agreement.

✅ الكتب الجديدة مفيدة للطلاب.

al-kutubu l-jadīdatu mufīdatun liṭ-ṭullāb.

The new books are useful for the students.

💡
A2 is complete when you can move from form to function in both directions: recognize an ending in a text, explain what governs it, and choose it yourself in a new sentence.

Key Takeaways

  • Keep spelling and connected reading active while adding morphology.
  • Learn each plural together with its human/nonhuman agreement behavior.
  • Treat the number ranges as distinct systems and parse the counted noun every time.
  • Build perfect, imperfect, imperative, and clitic forms inside complete sentences with verified valency.
  • Use annotated everyday genres to turn paradigms into practical formal communication.

Continue to the B1 Learner Path after the cumulative project and diagnostic are stable.
