The positive Arabic imperative is derived from the second-person jussive imperfect, not from the perfect. Start with a form such as لم تكتبْ, remove the second-person prefix تـ, and repair the beginning if the result starts with an impossible consonant cluster. Thus تكتبْ → كتبْ → اكتبْ “write!”
This method preserves the verified imperfect stem. That matters because Form-I internal vowels, weak letters, hamza, and gemination cannot be reconstructed safely from an English gloss or from the perfect alone. This page derives the masculine singular stem; the imperative endings page adds all five addressee forms.
The three-step procedure
Use regular Form I كَتَبَ / يَكْتُبُ “write,” root ك-ت-ب:
| Step | Form | What happened? |
|---|---|---|
| تَكْتُبُ | verified imperfect stem |
| لَمْ تَكْتُبْ | final mood vowel removed |
| اُكْتُبْ | تـ removed; hamzat al-waṣl added |
Removing تـ produces كْتُبْ, beginning with two consonants. Arabic supplies an initial hamzat al-waṣl so the word can be started: اُكْتُبْ. In ordinary unvocalized spelling the imperative is اكتب, with plain alif rather than أ.
اكتب رقم المرجع في أعلى الصفحة
uktub raqma l-marjiʿi fī ʾaʿlā ṣ-ṣafḥa
Write the reference number at the top of the page. (One male addressee.)
اقرأ التعليمات ثم اكتب الملخص بكلماتك
iqraʾi t-taʿlīmāti thumma ktubi l-mulakhkhaṣa bikalimātik
Read the instructions, then write the summary in your own words. (One male addressee.)
After ثمَّ, the hamzat al-waṣl of اكتب is elided in connected pronunciation, reflected by romanized thumma ktub-. The written alif remains.
The same prefix-removal test also works before the full ending paradigm is learned. Feminine-singular jussive تكتبي gives اكتبي, and masculine/mixed-plural تكتبوا gives اكتبوا. The surviving ي or وا belongs to addressee agreement; only the imperfect prefix is removed.
اكتبي موعد المراجعة بجانب اسم المشروع
uktubī mawʿida l-murājaʿati bijānibi smi l-mashrūʿ
Write the review date beside the project name. (One female addressee.)
اكتبوا ملخصا مشتركا قبل مغادرة القاعة
uktubū mulakhkhaṣan mushtarakan qabla mughādarati l-qāʿa
Write a joint summary before leaving the hall. (A male or mixed group.)
Choosing u or i on hamzat al-waṣl
For a basic Form-I imperative that needs a helping vowel, use u when the imperfect’s stem vowel is original u; otherwise use i. Compare verified principal parts:
| Principal parts | Jussive 2 m.sg. | Imperative |
|---|---|---|
| كَتَبَ / يَكْتُبُ | تَكْتُبْ | اُكْتُبْ |
| جَلَسَ / يَجْلِسُ | تَجْلِسْ | اِجْلِسْ |
| فَتَحَ / يَفْتَحُ | تَفْتَحْ | اِفْتَحْ |
اجلس قرب النافذة حتى يبدأ الاجتماع
ijlis qurba n-nāfidhati ḥattā yabdaʾa l-ijtimāʿ
Sit near the window until the meeting begins. (One male addressee.)
افتح الملف الذي أرسلته لك هذا الصباح
iftaḥi l-milaffa lladhī ʾarsaltuhu laka hādhā ṣ-ṣabāḥ
Open the file I sent you this morning. (One male addressee.)
The support i in connected افتحِ الملف prevents a cluster after the article’s hamzat al-waṣl drops; it is not part of the isolated imperative افتحْ.
There is no honest shortcut from the English meaning to the Form-I stem vowel. Store كتب / يكتب, جلس / يجلس, and فتح / يفتح as principal-part pairs.
When no helping alif is needed
After removing the imperfect prefix, many derived-form stems already begin with a pronounceable consonant plus vowel:
| Form | Jussive 2 m.sg. | Imperative |
|---|---|---|
ʿallimi l-mutadribīna ṭarīqata ḥifẓi n-nusakhi l-iḥtiyāṭiyya
Teach the trainees how to save backup copies. (One male addressee.)
شارك المعلومات مع زملائك قبل الاجتماع
shāriki l-maʿlūmāti maʿa zumalāʾika qabla l-ijtimāʿ
Share the information with your colleagues before the meeting. (One male addressee.)
Form III شَارَكَ / يُشَارِكُ, root ش-ر-ك, uses مع for the people receiving the shared information in this phrasing. Do not add a helping alif to make اشارك.
Form IV begins with hamzat al-qaṭʿ
Form IV is the major exception to “initial alif means hamzat al-waṣl.” From أَرْسَلَ / يُرْسِلُ “send,” root ر-س-ل, second-person jussive تُرْسِلْ produces imperative أَرْسِلْ. Its initial أ is hamzat al-qaṭʿ and remains pronounced after a preceding word.
راجع العنوان ثم أرسل الرسالة
rājiʿi l-ʿunwāna thumma ʾarsili r-risāla
Check the address, then send the message. (One male addressee.)
Romanized thumma ʾarsil retains hamza, unlike thumma ktub with hamzat al-waṣl.
أخرج البطاقة من الجهاز قبل إغلاق البرنامج
ʾakhriji l-biṭāqata mina l-jihāzi qabla ʾighlāqi l-barnāmaj
Remove the card from the device before closing the program. (One male addressee.)
Form IV أَخْرَجَ / يُخْرِجُ, root خ-ر-ج, has the attested causative lexical meaning “take out/remove.” A derived Form suggests a family but does not replace dictionary verification.
Forms VII, VIII, and X restore hamzat al-waṣl
After prefix removal, some derived stems begin with a cluster and therefore take initial hamzat al-waṣl:
| Form | Principal parts | Imperative |
|---|---|---|
| VII | اِنْطَلَقَ / يَنْطَلِقُ | اِنْطَلِقْ |
| VIII | اِجْتَمَعَ / يَجْتَمِعُ | اِجْتَمِعْ |
| X | اِسْتَخْدَمَ / يَسْتَخْدِمُ | اِسْتَخْدِمْ |
استخدم القناة الآمنة عند إرسال البيانات
istakhdimi l-qanāta l-ʾāminata ʿinda ʾirsāli l-bayānāt
Use the secure channel when sending the data. (One male addressee.)
انطلق من المحطة قبل ازدحام الطريق
inṭaliq mina l-maḥaṭṭati qabla zdihāmi ṭ-ṭarīq
Leave from the station before the road becomes congested. (One male addressee.)
Weak and geminate stems preserve jussive behavior
Final-weak Form I دَعَا / يَدْعُو, root د-ع-و, has second-person jussive تدعُ. Removing تـ gives a cluster, so the imperative is ادعُ, written without the deleted final wāw.
ادع الخبير إلى الاجتماع قبل تأكيد الموعد
udʿu l-khabīra ʾilā l-ijtimāʿi qabla taʾkīdi l-mawʿid
Invite the expert to the meeting before confirming the date. (One male addressee.)
Hollow قَالَ / يَقُولُ, root ق-و-ل, has jussive تقلْ and imperative قلْ; the stem already begins qu-, so it needs no alif. Geminate رَدَّ / يَرُدُّ, root ر-د-د, commonly uses contracted ردَّ.
قل الحقيقة ورد على الأسئلة بهدوء
quli l-ḥaqīqata warudda ʿalā l-ʾasʾilati bihudūʾ
Tell the truth and answer the questions calmly. (One male addressee.)
Support i links underlying قلْ to the following article. Contracted رُدَّ ends in fatḥa for pronounceability; it is not derived from perfect ردَّ by mere copying.
Common Mistakes
Deriving the command directly from the perfect
❌ كتب التقرير الآن
Incorrect as a command—كتب is a perfect form; derive اكتب from jussive تكتبْ.
✅ اكتب التقرير بعد مراجعة المصادر
uktubi t-taqrīra baʿda murājaʿati l-maṣādir
Write the report after checking the sources. (One male addressee.)
Writing hamzat al-qaṭʿ on a Form-I imperative
❌ أكتب رقم المرجع
Incorrect spelling for the imperative—Form-I اكتب begins with hamzat al-waṣl; أكتب normally represents ‘I write.’
✅ اكتب رقم المرجع تحت العنوان
uktub raqma l-marjiʿi taḥta l-ʿunwān
Write the reference number below the heading. (One male addressee.)
Giving اكتب the wrong helping vowel
❌ اكتب الملخص
iktub al-mulakhkhaṣ
Incorrect pronunciation—the verified imperfect يكتب has u, so the imperative is uktub.
✅ اكتب الملخص في فقرتين
uktubi l-mulakhkhaṣa fī fiqratayn
Write the summary in two paragraphs. (One male addressee.)
Treating Form IV hamza as elidable
❌ ثم ارسل الرسالة
Incorrect spelling—Form IV imperative أرسل has hamzat al-qaṭʿ.
✅ راجع المرفق ثم أرسل الرسالة
rājiʿi l-murfaqa thumma ʾarsili r-risāla
Check the attachment, then send the message. (One male addressee.)
Retaining a deleted weak letter
❌ ادعو الخبير إلى الاجتماع
Incorrect for masculine singular imperative دعا / يدعو—the jussive-based form deletes final و: ادعُ.
✅ ادع الخبير إلى جلسة المراجعة
udʿu l-khabīra ʾilā jalsati l-murājaʿa
Invite the expert to the review session. (One male addressee.)
Key Takeaways
- Derive the positive imperative from the second-person jussive imperfect.
- Remove تـ, then add hamzat al-waṣl only if an initial consonant cluster requires it.
- Form-I hamzat al-waṣl is u before an original stem u, otherwise normally i.
- Form IV imperatives begin with permanent hamzat al-qaṭʿ; several other derived Forms need no initial alif.
- Weak and geminate commands preserve the exact jussive stem behavior.
