The Indicative Imperfect

The indicative imperfect (المضارع المرفوع) is the default imperfect form in formal Modern Standard Arabic. Use it when no particle or construction governs the subjunctive or jussive. A regular sound singular shows final -u, as in يكتبُ; forms in ـينَ، ـانِ، ـونَ retain their nūn.

“Default” does not mean “present tense only.” The indicative can describe a current process, habit, general truth, scheduled future, or explicit future after سـ and سوف. Mood tells you the verb’s syntactic status; aspect and context establish time. Compare this default with the governed endings on the subjunctive imperfect page.

The visible indicative markers

Regular Form I كَتَبَ / يَكْتُبُ “write,” root ك-ت-ب, gives the basic ending map:

Agreement typeIndicativeMarker
sound singular / first-person pluralيَكْتُبُ / نَكْتُبُfinal ḍamma -u
you f.sg.تَكْتُبِينَnūn retained
dualيَكْتُبَانِ / تَكْتُبَانِnūn retained
masculine pluralيَكْتُبُونَ / تَكْتُبُونَnūn retained
feminine pluralيَكْتُبْنَ / تَكْتُبْنَinvariant nūn al-niswa

The first three nūn-bearing types belong to الأفعال الخمسة. Their nūn functions as the visible indicative marker and disappears after a subjunctive or jussive governor. Feminine-plural ـنَ is agreement and stays in every mood environment.

أكتب الملاحظات في دفتر منفصل لكل مشروع

ʾaktubu l-mulāḥaẓāti fī daftarin munfaṣilin likulli mashrūʿ

I write the notes in a separate notebook for each project.

أنت تكتبين العناوين بخط واضح

ʾanti taktubīna l-ʿanāwīna bikhaṭṭin wāḍiḥ

You write the headings in clear handwriting. (One female addressee.)

الباحثان يكتبان النتائج في جدول موحد

al-bāḥithāni yaktubāni n-natāʾija fī jadwalin muwaḥḥad

The two researchers write the results in a unified table.

💡
In fully inflected reading, listen for -u or retained nūn. In ordinary pausal reading those cues may be partly hidden, so confirm that no subjunctive or jussive governor precedes the verb.

Main clauses and questions

An affirmative main clause normally has no mood governor, so its imperfect is indicative.

تراجع مريم الفواتير قبل إرسالها إلى المحاسب

turājiʿu maryamu l-fawātīra qabla ʾirsālihā ʾilā l-muḥāsib

Maryam checks the invoices before sending them to the accountant.

Questions introduced by هل، متى، لماذا، أين also leave an ordinary imperfect indicative unless another governor is present.

متى يغادر القطار المحطة الرئيسية؟

matā yughādiru l-qiṭāru l-maḥaṭṭata r-raʾīsiyya?

When does the train leave the main station?

هل تعملان في المختبر نفسه هذا الأسبوع؟

hal taʿmalāni fī l-mukhtabari nafsihi hādhā l-ʾusbūʿ?

Are you two working in the same laboratory this week?

The interrogative does not delete dual nūn.

Non-governing negative لا

Ordinary لا النافية negates a present, habitual, or general imperfect without changing its mood.

لا يستخدم المختبر هذه المادة من دون تهوية

lā yastakhdimu l-mukhtabaru hādhihi l-māddāta min dūni tahwiya

The laboratory does not use this substance without ventilation.

Compare prohibitive لا تستخدمْ “Do not use,” which addresses someone and governs the jussive. Identical unvocalized spelling in some singular verbs makes clause type essential.

الطالبتان لا تستخدمان الجهاز قبل حضور المشرفة

aṭ-ṭālibatāni lā tastakhdimāni l-jihāza qabla ḥuḍūri l-mushrifa

The two students do not use the device before the supervisor arrives. (Both female.)

Indicative dual تستخدمانِ retains nūn after non-governing لا.

Future markers do not govern another mood

Prefixes سـ and particle سوف make future reference explicit while leaving the imperfect indicative.

سنراجع المقترح مع الفريق صباح الاثنين

sanurājiʿu l-muqtaraḥa maʿa l-farīqi ṣabāḥa l-ithnayn

We will review the proposal with the team on Monday morning.

سوف ترسل الموظفات الردود بعد الاجتماع

sawfa tursilu l-muwaẓẓafātu r-rudūda baʿda l-ijtimāʿ

The female employees will send the replies after the meeting. (Verb first.)

The second verb is singular feminine because it precedes an explicit human feminine plural subject. سوف does not cause that singular form; VSO agreement does.

Embedded does not automatically mean subjunctive

An imperfect inside a relative or reported-content clause remains indicative unless its own local governor selects another mood.

أعرف مهندسة تعمل على أنظمة الطاقة الشمسية

ʾaʿrifu muhandisatan taʿmalu ʿalā ʾanẓimati ṭ-ṭāqati sh-shamsiyya

I know an engineer who works on solar-energy systems.

أوضح التقرير أن الشركة تزيد إنتاجها تدريجيا

ʾawḍaḥa t-taqrīru ʾanna sh-sharikata tazīdu ʾintājahā tadrījiyyan

The report explained that the company was gradually increasing its production.

Heavy أنَّ assigns accusative case to الشركةَ but does not govern the mood of predicate تزيدُ. Light أنْ would directly govern a following subjunctive verb.

💡
Embedding alone does not create subjunctive mood. Find the word immediately licensing the imperfect: relative-clause context and أنَّ leave it indicative; أنْ makes it subjunctive.

Agreement in indicative clauses

Human plural subjects show the familiar word-order asymmetry, while nonhuman plurals normally take feminine-singular agreement.

يجتمع الخبراء في القاعة الشرقية كل شهر

yajtamiʿu l-khubarāʾu fī l-qāʿati sh-sharqiyyati kulla shahr

The experts meet in the eastern hall every month. (Verb first.)

الخبراء يجتمعون في القاعة الشرقية كل شهر

al-khubarāʾu yajtamiʿūna fī l-qāʿati sh-sharqiyyati kulla shahr

The experts meet in the eastern hall every month. (Subject first.)

النتائج تظهر على الشاشة بعد دقائق

an-natāʾiju taẓharu ʿalā sh-shāshati baʿda daqāʾiq

The results appear on the screen after a few minutes.

Nonhuman plural النتائج takes feminine-singular تظهرُ even in subject-first order.

Weak and geminate indicative forms

In final-weak دَعَا / يَدْعُو, root د-ع-و, the indicative ḍamma is grammatically present but not realized after long ū: يدعو yadʿū. The same is true of رَمَى / يَرْمِي yarmī and سَعَى / يَسْعَى yasʿā. Do not add a visible short vowel or infer jussive mood merely because none appears.

يسعى الفريق إلى حل يحمي البيانات الشخصية

yasʿā l-farīqu ʾilā ḥallin yaḥmī l-bayānāti sh-shakhṣiyya

The team seeks a solution that protects personal data.

Geminate Form I رَدَّ / يَرُدُّ, root ر-د-د, does show the indicative ḍamma on its contracted stem:

يرد المتحدث على الأسئلة بعد انتهاء العرض

yaruddu l-mutaḥaddithu ʿalā l-ʾasʾilati baʿda ntihāʾi l-ʿarḍ

The spokesperson answers questions after the presentation ends.

Common Mistakes

Deleting nūn without a governor

❌ الباحثان يكتبا النتائج كل مساء

Incorrect—an ungoverned dual imperfect is indicative يكتبان.

✅ الباحثان يكتبان النتائج في السجل الإلكتروني

al-bāḥithāni yaktubāni n-natāʾija fī s-sijilli l-ʾilikturūniyy

The two researchers write the results in the electronic record.

Making negative لا jussive in a statement

❌ لا يستخدم المختبر المادة عادة

lā yastakhdimi l-mukhtabaru l-māddāta ʿādatan

Incorrect pronunciation for a habitual statement—non-governing لا is followed by indicative yastakhdimu, not a jussive stem with a support vowel.

✅ لا يستخدم المختبر المادة في التجارب العادية

lā yastakhdimu l-mukhtabaru l-māddāta fī t-tajāribi l-ʿādiyya

The laboratory does not use the substance in ordinary experiments.

Making every embedded verb subjunctive

❌ التقرير يوضح أن الشركة تزيد إنتاجها

at-taqrīru yuwaḍḍiḥu ʾanna sh-sharikata tazīda ʾintājahā

Incorrect pronunciation—predicate تزيد is indicative after أنَّ.

✅ التقرير يوضح أن الشركة تزيد قدرتها الإنتاجية

at-taqrīru yuwaḍḍiḥu ʾanna sh-sharikata tazīdu qudratahā l-ʾintājiyya

The report explains that the company is increasing its production capacity.

Using full plural agreement in VSO

❌ يجتمعون الخبراء في القاعة

Incorrect in neutral formal VSO—use singular يجتمع before the explicit human plural subject.

✅ يجتمع الخبراء في القاعة قبل الجلسة

yajtamiʿu l-khubarāʾu fī l-qāʿati qabla l-jalsa

The experts meet in the hall before the session.

Treating an invisible weak ending as jussive

❌ يسعى فعل مجزوم لأنه لا ينتهي بضمة مسموعة

Incorrect analysis—indicative mood can have an estimated ending on a final weak letter.

✅ يسعى المدير إلى اتفاق يحفظ الوظائف

yasʿā l-mudīru ʾilā ttifāqin yaḥfaẓu l-waẓāʾif

The director seeks an agreement that preserves jobs.

Key Takeaways

  • The indicative is the default imperfect mood when no subjunctive or jussive governor applies.
  • Sound singulars show -u; the five verbs retain nūn; feminine plural has invariant nūn al-niswa.
  • Main clauses, questions, non-governing لا, سـ/سوف, relative clauses, and predicates after أنَّ commonly contain indicatives.
  • Time reference and mood are separate: an indicative can be present or future.
  • Weak endings may be estimated, while agreement and lexical stem behavior remain fully active.
