The Arabic subjunctive imperfect (المضارع المنصوب) appears after specific governors. Three central ones are أنْ introducing a verbal complement, لن denying a future event, and كي introducing purpose. A sound singular changes indicative يكتبُ to subjunctive يكتبَ; the “five verbs” delete their indicative nūn: يكتبونَ → أن يكتبوا.
Arabic subjunctive is not a vague “uncertain” mood. A desired action after أنْ can be very likely, and a purpose after كي can be carefully planned. The local governor determines the morphology; context supplies intention, futurity, and other meanings. Contrast these governed forms with the default endings on the indicative imperfect page.
The regular ending map
Use regular Form I كَتَبَ / يَكْتُبُ “write,” root ك-ت-ب, as the sound model:
| Agreement type | Indicative | Subjunctive | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| sound singular / 1st plural | يَكْتُبُ / نَكْتُبُ | يَكْتُبَ / نَكْتُبَ | -u → -a |
| you f.sg.
The deleted nūn marks a mood change; the remaining ي، ا، و still carry gender or number information. Nūn al-niswa in feminine plural is an agreement suffix and cannot be deleted.
أريد أن أكتب التقرير بعد مراجعة الأرقام
ʾurīdu ʾan ʾaktuba t-taqrīra baʿda murājaʿati l-ʾarqām
I want to write the report after checking the figures.
لن نكتب النتيجة قبل اكتمال التجربة
lan naktuba n-natījata qabla ktimāli t-tajriba
We will not write the conclusion before the experiment is complete.
أنْ introduces a verbal complement
Light أَنْ turns a following finite imperfect into a subordinate verbal complement. The verb still agrees with its own subject.
تريد مريم أن تراجع العقد مع المحامي
turīdu maryamu ʾan turājiʿa l-ʿaqda maʿa l-muḥāmī
Maryam wants to review the contract with the lawyer.
Form III رَاجَعَ / يُرَاجِعُ “review,” root ر-ج-ع, keeps its u-vocalized prefix and takes final subjunctive -a.
The subject of the complement can differ from the subject of the main clause:
طلبت المديرة أن يراجع المحامي البند الأخير
ṭalabati l-mudīratu ʾan yurājiʿa l-muḥāmī l-banda l-ʾakhīr
The director asked the lawyer to review the final clause.
English uses an infinitive, but Arabic uses a finite verb: masculine singular يراجعَ has an understood or explicit subject and ordinary verbal complements.
قرر الباحثان أن يختبرا العينة مرة أخرى
qarrara l-bāḥithāni ʾan yakhtabirā l-ʿayyinata marratan ʾukhrā
The two researchers decided to test the sample again.
Main قرر is singular before the explicit dual subject. Embedded Form VIII اِخْتَبَرَ / يَخْتَبِرُ “test,” root خ-ب-ر, has dual يختبرا with nūn deleted after أنْ.
Heavy أَنَّ is different. It introduces a nominal content clause and makes its noun accusative; it does not directly govern the mood of a later predicate verb: أعرف أن الباحثين يختبرون العينة “I know that the researchers are testing the sample.”
لن denies a future event
لن directly governs the subjunctive and makes the clause future-negative.
أنت لن تكتبي الرسالة من دون موافقة الإدارة
ʾanti lan taktubī r-risālata min dūni muwāfaqati l-ʾidāra
You will not write the letter without management approval. (One female addressee.)
المديران لن يوقعا الاتفاق اليوم
al-mudīrāni lan yuwaqqiʿā l-ittifāqa l-yawm
The two directors will not sign the agreement today.
المحاسبون لن يرسلوا الفواتير قبل الظهر
al-muḥāsibūna lan yursilū l-fawātīra qabla ẓ-ẓuhr
The accountants will not send the invoices before noon.
The feminine singular, dual, and masculine plural endings remain distinct even though all nūn-bearing “five verb” forms lose nūn. With an all-female plural, the agreement nūn stays:
المحاسبات لن يرسلن الفواتير قبل الظهر
al-muḥāsibātu lan yursilna l-fawātīra qabla ẓ-ẓuhr
The accountants will not send the invoices before noon. (All female.)
كي introduces purpose
Purpose particle كي answers “for what purpose?” and governs a subjunctive imperfect. The subject may be the same as or different from the main-clause subject.
راجعنا التعليمات كي نتجنب الأخطاء الشائعة
rājaʿnā t-taʿlīmāti kay natajannaba l-ʾakhṭāʾa sh-shāʾiʿa
We reviewed the instructions so that we could avoid common errors.
أرسلت الشركة الملفات كي يفحصها المدققون
ʾarsalati sh-sharikatu l-milaffāti kay yafḥaṣahā l-mudaqqiqūn
The company sent the files so that the auditors could inspect them.
The second purpose verb is singular masculine before its explicit human plural subject. Subjunctive يفحصَ retains that VSO agreement even when object suffix ـها follows.
حضرت المهندسات مبكرا كي يراجعن خطة السلامة
ḥaḍarati l-muhandisātu mubakkiran kay yurājiʿna khuṭṭata s-salāma
The engineers arrived early to review the safety plan. (All female.)
Main perfect is singular feminine in VSO. Feminine-plural subjunctive يراجعنَ is surface-invariant.
Final-weak and geminate subjunctives
Final-wāw Form I دَعَا / يَدْعُو, root د-ع-و, makes the subjunctive fatḥa audible on the weak letter: لن يدعوَ lan yadʿuwa. Final-yāʾ رَمَى / يَرْمِي, root ر-م-ي, has أن يرميَ ʾan yarmiya. With alif maqṣūra in سَعَى / يَسْعَى, root س-ع-ي, the subjunctive ending is estimated and the surface stays يسعى.
لن يدعو المنظم متحدثا آخر بعد إغلاق البرنامج
lan yadʿuwa l-munaẓẓimu mutaḥaddithan ʾākhara baʿda ʾighlāqi l-barnāmaj
The organizer will not invite another speaker after the program is finalized.
نقلت البلدية الحاويات كي يرمي السكان النفايات فيها
naqalati l-baladiyyatu l-ḥāwiyāti kay yarmiya s-sukkānu n-nufāyāti fīhā
The municipality moved the bins so that residents could put their waste in them.
تريد الجمعية أن تسعى إلى تمويل مستدام
turīdu l-jamʿiyyatu ʾan tasʿā ʾilā tamwīlin mustadām
The association wants to seek sustainable funding.
Geminate Form I رَدَّ / يَرُدُّ, root ر-د-د, normally has contracted subjunctive يردَّ.
لن يرد المتحدث على السؤال قبل التحقق من الخبر
lan yarudda l-mutaḥaddithu ʿalā s-suʾāli qabla t-taḥaqquqi mina l-khabar
The spokesperson will not answer the question before verifying the report.
Do not force -a into the spelling of alif-maqṣūra verbs or regularize a contracted geminate. Verify the actual stem class.
Common Mistakes
Keeping final -u after أنْ
❌ تريد مريم أن تراجع العقد
turīdu maryamu ʾan turājiʿu l-ʿaqd
Incorrect pronunciation—light أنْ governs subjunctive turājiʿa.
✅ تريد مريم أن تراجع العقد قبل الاجتماع
turīdu maryamu ʾan turājiʿa l-ʿaqda qabla l-ijtimāʿ
Maryam wants to review the contract before the meeting.
Retaining nūn in a five-verb form
❌ المديران لن يوقعان الاتفاق
Incorrect—dual يوقعان loses nūn after لن.
✅ المديران لن يوقعا الاتفاق من دون تعديل
al-mudīrāni lan yuwaqqiʿā l-ittifāqa min dūni taʿdīl
The two directors will not sign the agreement without an amendment.
Deleting nūn al-niswa
❌ حضرت المهندسات كي يراجعوا الخطة
Incorrect—an all-female subject requires invariant يراجعن.
✅ حضرت المهندسات كي يراجعن تفاصيل الخطة
ḥaḍarati l-muhandisātu kay yurājiʿna tafāṣīla l-khuṭṭa
The engineers arrived to review the plan’s details. (All female.)
Confusing أنَّ with أنْ
❌ أعرف أن الباحثين يختبروا العينة
Incorrect—أنَّ introduces a content clause; its predicate يختبرون remains indicative.
✅ أعرف أن الباحثين يختبرون العينة الآن
ʾaʿrifu ʾanna l-bāḥithīna yakhtabirūna l-ʿayyinata l-ʾān
I know that the researchers are testing the sample now.
Deleting the final weak letter as if jussive
❌ لن يدع المدير خبيرا آخر
Incorrect for subjunctive دعا / يدعو—لن يدعوَ retains the wāw; jussive لم يدعُ deletes it.
✅ لن يدعو المدير خبيرا آخر هذا الشهر
lan yadʿuwa l-mudīru khabīran ʾākhara hādhā sh-shahr
The director will not invite another expert this month.
Key Takeaways
- أنْ، لن، كي directly govern a subjunctive imperfect.
- Sound singulars show final -a; the five verbs delete nūn; feminine-plural nūn remains.
- أنْ introduces verbal complements, لن future denial, and كي purpose.
- Subjunctive verbs remain finite and preserve person, gender, number, voice, and lexical complements.
- Final-weak and geminate verbs follow their verified stem behavior rather than the sound template mechanically.
