The formal Arabic imperfect has three moods: indicative (المرفوع), subjunctive (المنصوب), and jussive (المجزوم). Mood tells you how the verb is licensed in its clause. An ungoverned imperfect is normally indicative; particles such as أنْ، لن، كي select the subjunctive; particles such as لم، لا الناهية، لام الأمر select the jussive.
This is not the same as English “indicative versus subjunctive.” Arabic mood is a visible inflectional system with specific governors. It applies to the imperfect, not to the perfect or imperative. A perfect such as كتبَ is complete for its own agreement category and cannot be made “jussive” by removing a vowel. The indicative imperfect and its two sister pages develop each mood after this map.
One strong verb across three moods
Regular Form I كَتَبَ / يَكْتُبُ “write,” root ك-ت-ب, shows the clearest singular contrast:
| Mood | Environment | Form | Visible ending |
|---|---|---|---|
| indicative | no subjunctive/jussive governor | يَكْتُبُ | -u |
| subjunctive | أَنْ يَكْتُبَ | يَكْتُبَ | -a |
| jussive | لَمْ يَكْتُبْ | يَكْتُبْ | sukūn |
يكتب المحرر مقدمة قصيرة لكل تقرير
yaktubu l-muḥarriru muqaddimatan qaṣīratan likulli taqrīr
The editor writes a short introduction for every report. (Indicative.)
طلبت المديرة أن يكتب المحرر مقدمة أقصر
ṭalabati l-mudīratu ʾan yaktuba l-muḥarriru muqaddimatan ʾaqṣar
The director asked the editor to write a shorter introduction. (Subjunctive.)
لم يكتب المحرر المقدمة قبل الموعد
lam yaktubi l-muḥarriru l-muqaddimata qabla l-mawʿid
The editor did not write the introduction before the deadline. (Jussive.)
Underlying jussive يكتبْ gains a support i before the article in connected speech. That phonological repair does not make it indicative.
The main distribution
The most productive environments are:
| Mood | Core governors/contexts | Typical relation |
|---|---|---|
| indicative | main clauses; after non-governing لا; after سـ / سوف | assertion, question, present or future context |
| subjunctive | أَنْ، لَنْ، كَيْ | verbal complement, future denial, purpose |
| jussive | لَمْ، لَا الناهية، لام الأمر; conditional environments | past negation, prohibition, command, condition |
The particles themselves are not lexical verbs and should not be assigned invented roots or Forms. The following verb retains its own root, Form, voice, agreement, and complement structure.
لا يعتمد القسم على مصدر واحد
lā yaʿtamidu l-qismu ʿalā maṣdarin wāḥid
The department does not rely on one source. (Indicative after non-governing negative لا.)
لن يعتمد القسم على مصدر غير موثق
lan yaʿtamida l-qismu ʿalā maṣdarin ghayri muwaththaq
The department will not rely on an undocumented source. (Subjunctive after لن.)
لا تعتمد على مصدر غير موثق
lā taʿtamid ʿalā maṣdarin ghayri muwaththaq
Do not rely on an undocumented source. (Jussive after prohibitive لا; one male addressee.)
Form VIII اِعْتَمَدَ / يَعْتَمِدُ “rely,” root ع-م-د, always selects على in this meaning. Mood changes its ending, not its lexical complement.
The five verbs: nūn retained or deleted
Forms ending in indicative ـينَ، ـانِ، ـونَ are traditionally grouped as الأفعال الخمسة. The indicative keeps nūn; both subjunctive and jussive delete it.
| Agreement | Indicative | Subjunctive after لن | Jussive after لم |
|---|---|---|---|
| you f.sg. | تَكْتُبِينَ | لَنْ تَكْتُبِي | لَمْ تَكْتُبِي |
| dual | يَكْتُبَانِ | لَنْ يَكْتُبَا | لَمْ يَكْتُبَا |
| masculine plural | يَكْتُبُونَ | لَنْ يَكْتُبُوا | لَمْ يَكْتُبُوا |
Because the nūn-less subjunctive and jussive forms look identical, the governor carries the distinction.
الطالبتان تراجعان البيانات كي تكتبا نتيجة مشتركة
aṭ-ṭālibatāni turājiʿāni l-bayānāti kay taktubā natījatan mushtaraka
The two students are reviewing the data so that they can write a joint conclusion. (Both female.)
Indicative dual تراجعانِ retains nūn. Purpose particle كي makes dual تكتبا subjunctive and deletes nūn.
الموظفون يرسلون الطلبات اليوم، لكنهم لن يرسلوا المرفقات
al-muwaẓẓafūna yursilūna ṭ-ṭalabāti l-yawma, lakinnahum lan yursilū l-murfaqāt
The employees are sending the applications today, but they will not send the attachments.
Feminine plural does not show the contrast
Nūn al-niswa in يكتبْنَ is agreement, not the deletable mood nūn. The same surface verb occurs in all three environments:
المهندسات يعملن اليوم، ولن يعملن غدا، ولم يعملن أمس
al-muhandisātu yaʿmalna l-yawma, walan yaʿmalna ghadan, walam yaʿmalna ʾams
The engineers are working today, will not work tomorrow, and did not work yesterday. (All female.)
Mood remains syntactically different even though يعملنَ is invariant. Use the particle, not a nonexistent suffix change, to identify it.
Weak and geminate verbs
Final-weak verbs can make the three-way contrast more visible than a sound verb. Form I دَعَا / يَدْعُو “invite/call,” root د-ع-و, has indicative يدعو, subjunctive يدعوَ, and jussive يدعُ, with the final wāw deleted in the jussive.
يدعو المدير الخبراء إلى اجتماع شهري
yadʿū l-mudīru l-khubarāʾa ʾilā jtimāʿin shahriyy
The director invites the experts to a monthly meeting. (Indicative.)
لن يدعو المدير ضيوفا إضافيين هذه المرة
lan yadʿuwa l-mudīru ḍuyūfan ʾiḍāfiyyīna hādhihi l-marra
The director will not invite additional guests this time. (Subjunctive.)
لم يدع المدير أي صحفي إلى الاجتماع
lam yadʿu l-mudīru ʾayya ṣaḥafiyyin ʾilā l-ijtimāʿ
The director did not invite any journalist to the meeting. (Jussive.)
Geminate Form I رَدَّ / يَرُدُّ, root ر-د-د, has indicative يردُّ and contracted subjunctive لن يردَّ. Contracted jussive لم يردَّ can look the same as the subjunctive, alongside expanded لم يردُدْ. Again, governor plus verified paradigm is safer than the last vowel alone.
Agreement remains independent of mood
In neutral formal VSO, a verb before an explicit human plural subject is singular; a nonhuman plural takes feminine-singular agreement. A governor changes mood without cancelling those rules.
لن يتأخر المندوبون عن الجلسة المقبلة
lan yataʾakhkhara l-mandūbūna ʿani l-jalsati l-muqbila
The representatives will not be late for the next session. (Singular verb in VSO.)
لم تتأخر الشحنات عن موعدها هذا الأسبوع
lam tataʾakhkhari sh-shuḥnātu ʿan mawʿidihā hādhā l-ʾusbūʿ
The shipments were not late this week. (Nonhuman plural with feminine-singular agreement.)
Underlying تتأخرْ is jussive; connected support i appears before the sun-letter article.
Common Mistakes
Assigning mood by time alone
❌ غدا يكتب المدير التقرير
ghadan yaktuba l-mudīru t-taqrīra
Incorrect pronunciation—a future adverb does not itself govern subjunctive mood; use indicative yaktubu.
✅ غدا يكتب المدير التقرير في مكتبه
ghadan yaktubu l-mudīru t-taqrīra fī maktabih
Tomorrow the director will write the report in his office. (Indicative.)
Keeping indicative nūn after a governor
❌ الموظفون لن يرسلون الملفات
Incorrect—لن deletes the nūn of masculine-plural يرسلون.
✅ الموظفون لن يرسلوا الملفات قبل التحقق منها
al-muwaẓẓafūna lan yursilū l-milaffāti qabla t-taḥaqquqi minhā
The employees will not send the files before checking them.
Deleting feminine-plural nūn
❌ المهندسات لم يعملوا أمس
Incorrect—an all-female subject requires invariant يعملن.
✅ المهندسات لم يعملن في الموقع أمس
al-muhandisātu lam yaʿmalna fī l-mawqiʿi ʾams
The engineers did not work at the site yesterday. (All female.)
Keeping a final weak letter in the jussive
❌ لم يدعو المدير الصحفيين
Incorrect for singular jussive دعا / يدعو—the final wāw is deleted: لم يدعُ.
✅ لم يدع المدير الصحفيين إلى المؤتمر الصحفي
lam yadʿu l-mudīru ṣ-ṣaḥafiyyīna ʾilā l-muʾtamari ṣ-ṣaḥafiyy
The director did not invite the journalists to the press conference.
Treating the perfect as mood-inflected
❌ لم كتب المدير التقرير
Incorrect—لم requires a jussive imperfect, not a perfect.
✅ لم يكتب المدير التقرير بسبب نقص البيانات
lam yaktubi l-mudīru t-taqrīra bisababi naqṣi l-bayānāt
The director did not write the report because data was missing.
Key Takeaways
- Only the imperfect participates in the indicative–subjunctive–jussive system.
- Sound singulars contrast -u, -a, sukūn; the five verbs retain nūn only in the indicative.
- Governors determine mood and often contribute time or clause relation.
- Feminine-plural forms are surface-invariant, and weak or geminate verbs require their verified paradigms.
- Mood never replaces agreement, word-order, or lexical-complement rules.
