University registration compresses information into noun chains: application form, home address, passport number, Faculty of Arts, admissions department. Modern Standard Arabic handles these labels efficiently with iḍāfa, while verb morphology keeps track of the student, the clerk, and the documents. The original dialogue below uses contemporary administrative MSA (formal/institutional); campus conversation outside the office is more often dialectal (regional).
Case endings are usually absent from ordinary writing and may be reduced in spontaneous formal speech, but the case relations remain part of the grammar. This page vocalizes connected forms where they make the structure visible and uses natural pause at clause boundaries. The aim is not to make every office visitor recite full iʿrāb; it is to show why an unvocalized form belongs in its slot.
The complete dialogue
This is an original learning dialogue, not a quotation from an institutional form.

Line-by-line grammar
Administrative iḍāfa packages information
An iḍāfa links a head noun to a following genitive complement without an intervening “of.” In برنامج اللغة العربية, برنامج is the program, اللغة identifies its domain, and adjective العربية modifies اللغة, not برنامج. In رقم جواز السفر, each noun narrows the preceding one: “number → passport → travel.”
The longer استمارة طلب الالتحاق means “the form of the application for admission.” The first and middle terms take no definite article; final الالتحاق makes the whole chain definite. This density is normal (formal/administrative), though prose should break genuinely ambiguous long chains. Start with the iḍāfa overview.
Definiteness and adjective attachment are visible at the edges
استمارة الطلب is definite because الطلب is definite. By contrast, نسخة من شهادة... is indefinite: it is “a copy” introduced for the first time. صورة شخصية is not an iḍāfa at all; it is an indefinite noun plus agreeing adjective, so both words can take tanwīn in fully connected speech.
اسم كلية الآداب forms one definite chain, “the name of the Faculty of Arts.” كلية exposes its -t- in connected construct pronunciation: kulliyyati l-ʾādāb. That alternation is not an optional spelling change; target orthography keeps ة, while pronunciation reflects the construct link.
Forms combine commands with institutional politeness
The clerk uses feminine singular commands املئي، وقعي، اكتبي because he is addressing one female student. Bare imperatives are normal in step-by-step instructions (formal/instructional); they do not automatically sound rude. ثم separates the fields into a safe sequence instead of producing one long chain joined only by و.
The student addresses the office as plural in هل تحتاجون. The clerk answers institutionally with first-person plural نحتاج. The neutral contemporary formal construction uses إلى: احتاج إلى صورة. Bare-object use is attested, but it is not the default pattern taught here; English need still makes omission of إلى an especially common transfer choice.
Case identifies roles even when ordinary writing does not
In أحضرت استمارة طلب الالتحاق, استمارةَ is accusative as the object, while طلبِ and الالتحاقِ are genitive inside the chain. In سيرسل قسم القبول رسالة التأكيد, verb-first قسمُ is the nominative subject and رسالةَ is the accusative object; both following iḍāfa complements are genitive. After إلى, بريدِكِ الإلكترونيِّ is genitive, and the adjective follows the noun's case.
Ordinary unvocalized text hides these short vowels, and a speaker may pause before voicing all of them. The syntax remains. Learn to recover the governor first, then decide how fully a particular formal setting realizes case; see case in formal speech.
Dual forms keep the photographs cohesive
After إلى, dual صورتين is genitive/accusative in -ayn. In معي صورتان, the same noun is the nominative subject of a possessive/location predication and appears in -ān. Dual object suffix ـهما in سأرفقهما then retrieves exactly those two photographs. Number is doing discourse work, not merely counting.
Comprehension and production practice
For comprehension, list the documents and fields mentioned. Which three words form the longest iḍāfa chain? Why is صورتان nominative but صورتين genitive after إلى? Identify the subject and object of سيرسل قسم القبول رسالة التأكيد.
For production, change the program to برنامج الهندسة المدنية and the faculty to كلية الهندسة. Then role-play the exchange with a male student: change feminine commands to masculine املأ، وقع، اكتب, and change addressee suffixes from -ki to -ka in speech.
Common Mistakes
Adding الـ to the first term of an iḍāfa
❌ أكتب الرقم جواز السفر هنا.
Incorrect for ‘the passport number’—the first term رقم cannot take الـ when followed directly by its iḍāfa complement.
✅ أكتب رقم جواز السفر هنا.
ʾaktubu raqma jawāzi s-safari hunā.
I write the passport number here.
Giving every noun in a chain the same case
❌ أحضرت استمارة طلب الالتحاق، مع نطق الكلمات الثلاث بالفتحة.
Incorrect analysis—only the head is accusative as the object; the following iḍāfa terms are genitive.
✅ أحضرت استمارة طلب الالتحاق؟
ʾaḥḍarti stimārata ṭalabi l-iltiḥāqi?
Did you bring the admission-application form? (Addressing a woman.)
Omitting إلى from the neutral formal construction
❌ نحتاج صورتين شخصيتين.
Avoid this as the neutral formal pattern: contemporary MSA normally uses احتاج إلى before the needed item, although bare-object use is also attested.
✅ نحتاج إلى صورتين شخصيتين.
naḥtāju ʾilā ṣūratayni shakhṣiyyatayn.
We need two passport-style photographs.
Losing feminine command agreement
❌ اكتب رقم الجواز هنا يا ليلى.
Incorrect—one female addressee requires the feminine command اكتبي.
✅ اكتبي رقم الجواز هنا يا ليلى.
ʾuktubī raqma l-jawāzi hunā yā laylā.
Write the passport number here, Layla.
Key Takeaways
- Iḍāfa builds compact institutional labels; only the final term can carry الـ, while definiteness spreads to the whole chain.
- Distinguish iḍāfa from noun–adjective agreement: صورة شخصية has matching indefiniteness and case.
- Case follows syntax: an object head may be accusative while its iḍāfa complements are genitive.
- Maintain addressee gender in form instructions and maintain dual number through صورتان/صورتين/ـهما.
