Formal Modern Standard Arabic uses لن + subjunctive imperfect to deny a future event: لن نرسلَ العقد اليوم “We will not send the contract today.” لن supplies future-oriented negation and governs the verb’s subjunctive mood. It does not take a perfect, and the verb does not keep its ordinary indicative ending.
The construction can sound firm, especially in promises and refusals, but لن does not inherently mean “never for all eternity.” لن أحضر غدًا denies attendance tomorrow; it says nothing about next week. Duration and rhetorical force come from context and expressions such as أبدًا، مرة أخرى، هذا الأسبوع.
How لن marks the subjunctive
Negative لن is a particle, not a lexical verb, so it has no root or derived Form. The following lexical imperfect keeps its person, gender, number, Form, and complements while taking subjunctive morphology.
Regular Form I كَتَبَ / يَكْتُبُ “write,” root ك-ت-ب, shows the main ending types:
| Subject | Indicative | After لن | Subjunctive signal |
|---|---|---|---|
The deleted nūn belongs to the “five verbs” endings ـين، ـان، ـون. Feminine-plural ـنَ is a subject-agreement suffix and remains.
لن أرسل النسخة قبل أن أتحقق من الأرقام
lan ʾursila n-nuskhata qabla ʾan ʾataḥaqqaqa mina l-ʾarqām
I will not send the copy before I verify the figures.
Form IV أَرْسَلَ / يُرْسِلُ “send,” root ر-س-ل, keeps its u-vocalized prefix in first-person أُرسلَ. لن changes the final mood vowel, not the Form’s prefix class.
لن تسافر ليلى هذا الأسبوع بسبب موعدها الطبي
lan tusāfira laylā hādhā l-ʾusbūʿa bisababi mawʿidihā ṭ-ṭibbiyy
Layla will not travel this week because of her medical appointment.
Compare لا, لم, and لن as complete packages
The three common negators differ in both time reference and the mood they license. Do not choose among them by translating the English word not in isolation.
| Construction | Typical time | Mood | Typical English |
|---|---|---|---|
| لَا يَكْتُبُ | present/general, or contextual future | indicative unless another governor applies | does not write / contextually will not write |
| لَمْ يَكْتُبْ | past | jussive | did not write |
| لَنْ يَكْتُبَ | future | subjunctive | will not write |
See future negation with لا and past negation with لم for the other two complete systems.
Topics and time phrases can precede لن
لن directly precedes the imperfect it governs, apart from very restricted parenthetical material, but a time phrase or contrastive topic may precede the whole clause: غدًا لن نفتحَ المكتب “tomorrow we will not open the office.” With أما, the response normally begins with attached فـ, as in أما النسخة الورقية، فلن نطبعَها اليوم “as for the printed copy, we will not print it today.” The linking فـ does not interrupt the government relation: لن still governs نطبعَ.
Dual, plural, and feminine agreement
The subject remains exactly as specific as in an affirmative imperfect.
أنت لن تكتبي التقرير وحدك
ʾanti lan taktubī t-taqrīra waḥdak
You will not write the report alone. (One female addressee.)
المديران لن يوقعا العقد قبل مراجعة الملحق
al-mudīrāni lan yuwaqqiʿā l-ʿaqda qabla murājaʿati l-mulḥaq
The two directors will not sign the contract before reviewing the appendix.
الموظفون لن يغادروا المبنى قبل انتهاء التدريب
al-muwaẓẓafūna lan yughādirū l-mabnā qabla ntihāʾi t-tadrīb
The employees will not leave the building before the training ends.
الموظفات لن يغادرن المبنى قبل انتهاء التدريب
al-muwaẓẓafātu lan yughādirna l-mabnā qabla ntihāʾi t-tadrīb
The employees will not leave the building before the training ends. (All female.)
Masculine plural يغادرونَ becomes يغادروا. Feminine plural يغادرنَ remains visibly unchanged, though لن still makes the construction subjunctive.
Word order and nonhuman plurals
In neutral formal VSO, a verb before an explicit human dual or plural subject normally remains singular while matching gender. لن does not alter that syntax.
لن يحضر الموظفون الجلسة المسائية
lan yaḥḍura l-muwaẓẓafūna l-jalsata l-masāʾiyya
The employees will not attend the evening session. (Verb first.)
لن تحضر الموظفات الجلسة المسائية
lan taḥḍura l-muwaẓẓafātu l-jalsata l-masāʾiyya
The female employees will not attend the evening session. (Verb first.)
Subject-first الموظفون لن يحضروا uses full plural agreement. The subjunctive verb-first forms above are singular يحضرَ، تحضرَ.
Nonhuman plurals normally take feminine-singular agreement even when the noun precedes the verb:
الطلبات لن تصل إلى اللجنة قبل الخميس
aṭ-ṭalabātu lan taṣila ʾilā l-lajnati qabla l-khamīs
The applications will not reach the committee before Thursday.
Do not replace تصلَ with human plural يصلوا. This agreement rule is separate from nūn deletion.
A future denial, not an eternal formula
Time phrases can make the scope of لن narrow and ordinary:
لن نفتح المكتب غدا بسبب أعمال الصيانة
lan naftaḥa l-maktaba ghadan bisababi ʾaʿmāli ṣ-ṣiyāna
We will not open the office tomorrow because of maintenance work.
لن أقبل العرض بهذه الشروط
lan ʾaqbala l-ʿarḍa bihādhihi sh-shurūṭ
I will not accept the offer on these terms.
The second sentence can be a forceful refusal, but the force comes from the speech act and بهذه الشروط. Changed terms could change the answer. Adding أبدًا “ever/never” strengthens the temporal scope; لن alone does not encode eternity. Claims that it always means “never, permanently” confuse a possible rhetorical use with the grammar of every sentence.
Do not insert سـ or سوف after لن
لن itself makes the finite imperfect future-oriented. The neutral construction is لن نسافرَ, not لن سنسافر or لن سوف نسافر. The future markers سـ and سوف do not stand between لن and its governed verb.
Contemporary journalistic writing occasionally places سوف before لن in the marked sequence سوف لن... (contemporary written; stylistically contested). Some prescriptive authorities reject it, and it is not the neutral beginner model. Even there, لن still directly governs the following subjunctive imperfect.
سنسافر بعد انتهاء المؤتمر، لكننا لن نسافر الليلة
sanusāfiru baʿda ntihāʾi l-muʾtamari, lakinnanā lan nusāfira l-layla
We will travel after the conference ends, but we will not travel tonight.
Affirmative سنسافرُ is indicative. Negative لن نسافرَ is subjunctive and has no added future prefix.
The neighboring future negation with لا covers contexts where non-governing لا negates a predicted, scheduled, or generic future. Do not assume the two particles differ only in “strength”; they build different mood environments.
Weak and geminate verbs after لن
Final-weak verbs show the subjunctive fatḥa on a surviving weak letter when spelling permits. Form I دَعَا / يَدْعُو “invite/call,” root د-ع-و, has لن يدعوَ lan yadʿuwa. Form I رَمَى / يَرْمِي “throw,” root ر-م-ي, has لن يرميَ lan yarmiya. With alif maqṣūra, as in سَعَى / يَسْعَى “seek,” root س-ع-ي, the subjunctive vowel is not visibly or audibly distinct: لن يسعى lan yasʿā.
لن يدعو المدير الصحفيين إلى الاجتماع المغلق
lan yadʿuwa l-mudīru ṣ-ṣaḥafiyyīna ʾilā l-ijtimāʿi l-mughlaq
The director will not invite the journalists to the closed meeting.
لن ترمي الشركة المخلفات في النهر
lan tarmiya sh-sharikatu l-mukhallafāti fī n-nahr
The company will not dump the waste into the river.
Geminate Form I رَدَّ / يَرُدُّ “reply,” root ر-د-د, has contracted subjunctive لن يردَّ. The final fatḥa is the visible mood marker.
لن يرد المتحدث على أسئلة إضافية اليوم
lan yarudda l-mutaḥaddithu ʿalā ʾasʾilatin ʾiḍāfiyyatin l-yawm
The spokesperson will not answer additional questions today.
Verify the perfect, imperfect, and weak/geminate class. لن selects subjunctive morphology; it does not make an irregular verb regular.
Common Mistakes
Keeping an indicative singular ending
❌ لن نرسل العقد اليوم
lan nursilu l-ʿaqda l-yawm
Incorrect pronunciation—لن requires subjunctive nursila, not indicative nursilu.
✅ لن نرسل العقد قبل انتهاء المراجعة
lan nursila l-ʿaqda qabla ntihāʾi l-murājaʿa
We will not send the contract before the review is complete.
Keeping nūn in a five-verb form
❌ الموظفون لن يغادرون المبنى
Incorrect—masculine plural يغادرون loses nūn after لن.
✅ الموظفون لن يغادروا المبنى أثناء الإنذار
al-muwaẓẓafūna lan yughādirū l-mabnā ʾathnāʾa l-ʾindhār
The employees will not leave the building during the alarm.
Deleting feminine-plural nūn
❌ الموظفات لن يغادروا القاعة
Incorrect—an all-female subject requires invariant يغادرن.
✅ الموظفات لن يغادرن القاعة قبل الاستراحة
al-muwaẓẓafātu lan yughādirna l-qāʿata qabla l-istirāḥa
The female employees will not leave the hall before the break.
Inserting another future marker after لن
❌ لن سنفتح المكتب غدا
Incorrect—لن directly governs the imperfect; do not insert سـ.
✅ لن نفتح المكتب غدا بسبب العطلة
lan naftaḥa l-maktaba ghadan bisababi l-ʿuṭla
We will not open the office tomorrow because of the holiday.
Assuming لن always means eternal “never”
❌ لن أحضر غدا يعني أنني لن أحضر أبدا
Incorrect interpretation—the sentence with غدا denies only tomorrow’s attendance.
✅ لن أحضر غدا، لكنني سأشارك في جلسة الخميس
lan ʾaḥḍura ghadan, lakinnanī saʾushāriku fī jalsati l-khamīs
I will not attend tomorrow, but I will participate in Thursday’s session.
Key Takeaways
- لن directly governs a subjunctive imperfect and gives it future-negative reference.
- Sound singulars show final -a; ـين، ـان، ـون lose nūn; feminine plural ـنَ remains.
- Agreement, VSO syntax, nonhuman-plural agreement, lexical complements, and root-class behavior all remain active.
- Do not insert سـ or سوف after لن; use plain لن + subjunctive as the neutral model, and do not put a perfect after it.
- لن can be forceful, but duration and “never” meanings require context or explicit expressions.
