Dual Imperfect Forms

Formal Modern Standard Arabic marks exactly two subjects or addressees with imperfect ـانِ in the indicative: يكتبانِ “the two men write,” تكتبانِ “the two women write” or “you two write.” After a subjunctive or jussive governor, the mood-marking nūn disappears but the dual alif remains: لن يكتبا، لم يكتبا، أن تكتبا.

English does not distinguish singular, dual, and plural you, and it uses the same “they write” for two or twenty people. Arabic dual agreement is therefore easy to overlook. It is productive and expected in careful (formal) contemporary writing. Its nūn behaves differently from the invariant agreement nūn explained on the feminine-plural imperfect page.

Three dual cells

Regular Form I كَتَبَ / يَكْتُبُ “write,” root ك-ت-ب, provides the sound model:

ReferencePronounIndicativeStructure
two men or a mixed pairهُمَايَكْتُبَانِيَـ + كتب + ـانِ
two womenهُمَاتَكْتُبَانِتَـ + كتب + ـانِ
two addressees of any genderأَنْتُمَاتَكْتُبَانِتَـ + كتب + ـانِ

Third-person gender appears in the prefix: يـ for a masculine or mixed pair and تـ for two women. Second-person dual أنتما تكتبان has one form for every gender combination.

الطبيبان يكتبان توصية مشتركة بعد الفحص

aṭ-ṭabībāni yaktubāni tawṣiyatan mushtarakatan baʿda l-faḥṣ

The two doctors are writing a joint recommendation after the examination. (Two men or a mixed pair.)

الطبيبتان تكتبان توصية منفصلة لكل مريض

aṭ-ṭabībatāni taktubāni tawṣiyatan munfaṣilatan likulli marīḍ

The two female doctors write a separate recommendation for each patient.

هل تكتبان ملاحظاتكما في الملف نفسه؟

hal taktubāni mulāḥaẓātikumā fī l-malaffi nafsih?

Are you two writing your notes in the same file?

💡
Use the pronoun to separate the two readings of تكتبان: هما تكتبان means “the two women write,” while أنتما تكتبان means “you two write.”

The nūn marks indicative mood

Dual ـانِ belongs to the “five verbs” (الأفعال الخمسة). Its nūn remains in the indicative and is deleted in the subjunctive and jussive:

EnvironmentMasculine third-person dualMood signal
ungoverned indicativeيَكْتُبَانِnūn present
أَنْ + subjunctiveأَنْ يَكْتُبَاnūn deleted
لَنْ + subjunctiveلَنْ يَكْتُبَاnūn deleted
لَمْ + jussiveلَمْ يَكْتُبَاnūn deleted

Subjunctive and jussive dual verbs are identical on the surface. The governor identifies the mood and supplies the relation: لن future negation, لم past negation, and أن a subordinate infinitival-like clause.

يريد المهندسان أن يراجعا القياسات قبل البناء

yurīdu l-muhandisāni ʾan yurājiʿā l-qiyāsāti qabla l-bināʾ

The two engineers want to check the measurements before construction. (Verb first in the main clause.)

Main verb يريدُ is singular because it precedes the explicit dual subject. Form III يراجعا has full dual agreement with its understood subject and loses nūn after أن.

المندوبان لن يغادرا الفندق قبل وصول السيارة

al-mandūbāni lan yughādirā l-funduqa qabla wuṣūli s-sayyāra

The two representatives will not leave the hotel before the car arrives.

الطالبتان لم ترسلا النسخة الصحيحة أمس

aṭ-ṭālibatāni lam tursilā n-nuskhata ṣ-ṣaḥīḥata ʾams

The two students did not send the correct version yesterday. (Both female.)

لا تتركا الحقائب قرب باب الطوارئ

lā tatrukā l-ḥaqāʾiba qurba bābi ṭ-ṭawāriʾ

Do not leave the bags near the emergency exit. (Addressing two people.)

Prohibitive لا also governs the jussive, so second-person indicative تتركانِ becomes لا تتركا.

Subject position controls full agreement

After a preverbal dual subject, the imperfect is dual. Before an explicit dual subject in neutral formal VSO, the verb is singular while matching gender.

يعمل المهندسان على تصميم الجسر

yaʿmalu l-muhandisāni ʿalā taṣmīmi l-jisr

The two engineers are working on the bridge design. (Verb first.)

المهندسان يعملان على تصميم الجسر

al-muhandisāni yaʿmalāni ʿalā taṣmīmi l-jisr

The two engineers are working on the bridge design. (Subject first.)

تعمل المهندستان على نموذج مختلف

taʿmalu l-muhandisatāni ʿalā namūdhajin mukhtalif

The two female engineers are working on a different model. (Verb first.)

Do not put يعملان المهندسان or تعملان المهندستان into neutral VSO merely because the subject denotes two. The dual ending belongs when the subject precedes the verb, is a pronoun, or is understood inside the verb.

Nonhuman dual is still dual

The feminine-singular agreement rule for nonhuman plurals does not erase the dual. A pair of nonhuman nouns normally takes dual agreement when it comes first:

السيارتان تتوقفان أمام المبنى كل صباح

as-sayyāratāni tatawaqqafāni ʾamāma l-mabnā kulla ṣabāḥ

The two cars stop in front of the building every morning.

Compare plural السيارات تتوقف “the cars stop,” with feminine-singular agreement. Number agreement therefore depends on whether the noun is genuinely dual or plural, not merely on whether its referent is human.

Weak and geminate dual stems

The ending attaches to the verified imperfect stem. Hollow Form I قَالَ / يَقُولُ, root ق-و-ل, has indicative يقولانِ and nūn-less يقولا; its long vowel remains. Final-weak دَعَا / يَدْعُو, root د-ع-و, has يدعوانِ yadʿuwāni and لن يدعوا lan yadʿuwā. Here the root wāw stands directly before the dual alif.

المحاميان يدعوان الطرفين إلى تسوية عادلة

al-muḥāmiyāni yadʿuwāni ṭ-ṭarafayni ʾilā taswiyatin ʿādila

The two lawyers are calling on both parties to reach a fair settlement.

المحاميان لن يدعوا الطرفين إلى اجتماع مغلق

al-muḥāmiyāni lan yadʿuwā ṭ-ṭarafayni ʾilā jtimāʿin mughlaq

The two lawyers will not call the parties into a closed meeting.

Geminate Form I مَدَّ / يَمُدُّ, root م-د-د, normally remains contracted before the dual vowel: يمدّانِ، لن يمدّا.

المديران يمدان فترة التقديم أسبوعا آخر

al-mudīrāni yamuddāni fatrata t-taqdīmi ʾusbūʿan ʾākhar

The two directors are extending the application period by another week.

💡
Delete only the mood nūn. In لن يدعوا, the wāw belongs to the final-weak root and the alif marks dual agreement; neither may be discarded with the nūn.

Formal status

Dual agreement is ordinary (formal) MSA in reporting, administration, education, and prepared speech. Regional varieties differ: some retain dual nouns but reduce verbal dual marking (regional). When producing formal MSA, write and pronounce يكتبان، تكتبان، لن يكتبا rather than copying a regional plural or singular verb after a preverbal pair.

Common Mistakes

Using a plural for exactly two people

❌ الطبيبان يكتبون التوصية

Incorrect after a preverbal dual subject—use يكتبان, not masculine plural يكتبون.

✅ الطبيبان يكتبان التوصية قبل مغادرة المريض

aṭ-ṭabībāni yaktubāni t-tawṣiyata qabla mughādarati l-marīḍ

The two doctors write the recommendation before the patient leaves.

Losing feminine gender in third person

❌ الطالبتان يكتبان الملخص

Incorrect—the third-person feminine dual uses تكتبان.

✅ الطالبتان تكتبان الملخص في المكتبة

aṭ-ṭālibatāni taktubāni l-mulakhkhaṣa fī l-maktaba

The two students are writing the summary in the library. (Both female.)

Keeping nūn after لن or لم

❌ المندوبان لن يغادران الفندق

Incorrect—لن governs the subjunctive, so dual يغادران loses nūn.

✅ المندوبان لن يغادرا الفندق قبل الظهر

al-mandūbāni lan yughādirā l-funduqa qabla ẓ-ẓuhr

The two representatives will not leave the hotel before noon.

Using full dual agreement in neutral VSO

❌ يعملان المهندسان على التصميم

Incorrect in neutral formal VSO—use singular يعمل before the explicit dual subject.

✅ يعمل المهندسان على التصميم منذ الصباح

yaʿmalu l-muhandisāni ʿalā t-taṣmīmi mundhu ṣ-ṣabāḥ

The two engineers have been working on the design since morning.

Applying nonhuman-plural agreement to a dual

❌ السيارتان تتوقف أمام المبنى

Incorrect after a preverbal dual noun—nonhuman dual still takes تتوقفان.

✅ السيارتان تتوقفان عند البوابة الرئيسية

as-sayyāratāni tatawaqqafāni ʿinda l-bawwābati r-raʾīsiyya

The two cars stop at the main gate.

Regularizing a final-weak stem

❌ المحاميان يدعيان إلى تسوية

Incorrect for دعا / يدعو ‘call for’—the dual is يدعوان, not يدعيان.

✅ المحاميان يدعوان إلى حل يحفظ حقوق الطرفين

al-muḥāmiyāni yadʿuwāni ʾilā ḥallin yaḥfaẓu ḥuqūqa ṭ-ṭarafayn

The two lawyers call for a solution that protects both parties’ rights.

Key Takeaways

  • Indicative dual imperfect ends in ـانِ; second person has one form for all gender combinations.
  • Subjunctive and jussive governors delete the dual nūn, leaving ـا.
  • The governor, not the resulting identical surface form, distinguishes subjunctive from jussive.
  • Preverbal dual subjects trigger full agreement; neutral VSO uses a preceding singular verb.
  • Nonhuman duals remain dual, while weak and geminate verbs preserve their verified stem behavior.
