Subject-First Agreement

When an overt human subject comes before its verb, formal MSA normally gives the verb full agreement in person, gender, and number: الطلاب كتبوا “the students wrote,” الطالبتان كتبتا “the two female students wrote.” This contrasts with canonical verb-first order, where the verb before an overt dual or plural subject is singular.

Subject-first order is completely standard, but it is not merely Arabic words placed in familiar English SVO order. It often turns the preverbal noun phrase into a discourse topic or contrast, and the verb’s ending supplies a pronominal subject linked back to it.

Human subjects trigger full agreement

Calculate agreement from the entire preverbal subject: person, then number, then gender.

الطالب كتب الملخص.

aṭ-ṭālibu kataba l-mulakhkhaṣ.

The male student wrote the summary. (Masculine singular.)

الطالبة كتبت الملخص.

aṭ-ṭālibatu katabati l-mulakhkhaṣ.

The female student wrote the summary. (Feminine singular.)

الطالبان كتبا الملخص.

aṭ-ṭālibāni katabā l-mulakhkhaṣ.

The two male students wrote the summary. (Masculine dual.)

الطالبتان كتبتا الملخص.

aṭ-ṭālibatāni katabatā l-mulakhkhaṣ.

The two female students wrote the summary. (Feminine dual.)

الطلاب كتبوا الملخص.

aṭ-ṭullābu katabū l-mulakhkhaṣ.

The male or mixed-gender students wrote the summary. (Masculine plural.)

الطالبات كتبن الملخص.

aṭ-ṭālibātu katabna l-mulakhkhaṣ.

The female students wrote the summary. (Feminine plural.)

English marks third-person number only in the present tense and never marks gender on the verb. Arabic tracks all three categories, including gender in the perfect and imperfect and distinct dual forms.

💡
With a preverbal human controller, read the whole subject before choosing the verb ending. الطالبتان requires feminine dual كتبتا; الطلاب requires masculine plural كتبوا. Do not stop after recognizing “third person.”

Matched SVO and VSO

Compare the same proposition in two orders:

ناقش الباحثون النتائج في الاجتماع.

nāqasha l-bāḥithūna n-natāʾija fī l-ijtimāʿ.

The researchers discussed the results in the meeting. (VSO; singular verb before the plural subject.)

الباحثون ناقشوا النتائج في الاجتماع.

al-bāḥithūna nāqashū n-natāʾija fī l-ijtimāʿ.

The researchers discussed the results in the meeting. (SVO; full agreement.)

The VSO version is a natural event report. The SVO version readily answers “What did the researchers do?” or contrasts them with another group. This is a tendency of information structure, not a rule that every first mention must be VSO or every known subject must be SVO.

Why the full ending appears

In traditional analysis, a preverbal noun phrase can be a مبتدأ “topic,” while the following verbal clause is its predicate. The verb’s attached or implicit pronoun is the grammatical subject inside that predicate and links back to the topic. This analysis explains why the verb carries full number and gender:

  • الطلاب [كتبوا التقرير]: وا is the plural pronominal subject of كتبوا.
  • الطالبات [كتبن التقرير]: نَ is the feminine-plural pronominal subject of كتبن.
  • الطالبتان [كتبتا التقرير]: ا encodes the dual subject inside the verbal clause.

You do not need to choose between “topic” and “subject” every time you speak. The practical result is stable: a preverbal human NP requires full agreement, while its nominative case remains visible in careful inflection.

Overt pronouns and contrast

Arabic verbs already encode their subject, so an independent pronoun is not normally required. When a pronoun comes first, it commonly marks contrast, topic continuity, or clarity, and the verb must agree fully with it.

نحن نراجع النسخة الأخيرة، وهم يراجعون الملاحق.

naḥnu nurājiʿu n-nuskhata l-ʾakhīrata, wa-hum yurājiʿūna l-malāḥiq.

We are reviewing the final version, while they are reviewing the appendices. (Contrastive topics.)

هي أعدت الجدول، لا أنا.

hiya ʾaʿaddati l-jadwala, lā ʾanā.

She prepared the schedule, not me. (Focused contrast.)

Dropping نحن or هي would leave grammatically complete verbs نراجع and أعدّت. Keeping the pronoun changes discourse emphasis, not basic reference.

Coordinated subjects and person hierarchy

When a coordinated subject comes before the verb, calculate agreement over the complete set. First person outranks second and third; second person outranks third. Mixed human gender normally selects masculine agreement.

أنا وزملائي سنشارك في الورشة.

ʾanā wa-zumalāʾī sa-nushāriku fī l-warsha.

My colleagues and I will participate in the workshop. (First-person plural agreement.)

أنت وزملاؤك تعملون على المشروع نفسه.

ʾanta wa-zumalāʾuka taʿmalūna ʿalā l-mashrūʿi nafsih.

You and your colleagues are working on the same project. (Second-person masculine/mixed plural.)

أنت وهي ستقدمان العرض معا.

ʾanta wa-hiya sa-tuqaddimāni l-ʿarḍa maʿā.

You and she will give the presentation together. (Second-person dual agreement.)

ليلى وسامر أنهيا المهمة في موعدها.

laylā wa-sāmirun ʾanhayā l-muhimmata fī mawʿidihā.

Layla and Samer completed the task on time. (Mixed-gender third-person dual; masculine agreement.)

The hierarchy is grammatical person, not social importance. A director does not outrank “I” or “you” in agreement.

Nonhuman plurals are fully agreeing—but as feminine singular

The phrase “full agreement” can mislead. A plural nonhuman noun has feminine singular agreement features in standard Arabic, even when it comes first. The verb therefore remains feminine singular.

التقارير المالية وصلت إلى الإدارة صباحا.

at-taqārīru l-māliyyatu waṣalat ʾilā l-ʾidārati ṣabāḥā.

The financial reports reached the administration in the morning. (Nonhuman plural; feminine singular verb.)

الأجهزة الجديدة تعمل بكفاءة.

al-ʾajhizatu l-jadīdatu taʿmalu bikafāʾa.

The new devices operate efficiently. (Nonhuman plural; feminine singular adjective and verb.)

Do not replace وصلت with وصلن or تعمل with يعملون. The nonhuman plural agreement page covers adjectives, demonstratives, pronouns, and relative clauses as well as verbs.

Fronting a topic that is not the subject

A noun phrase before a verb is not automatically that verb’s subject. A fronted object-topic is normally resumed by an object clitic, while the later nominative NP controls subject agreement.

هذا التقرير راجعه المدير بنفسه.

hādhā t-taqrīru rājaʿahu l-mudīru binafsih.

As for this report, the director reviewed it himself. (Nominative topic resumed by ـه.)

هذه المقترحات ناقشتها اللجنة أمس.

hādhihi l-muqtaraḥātu nāqashat-hā l-lajnatu ʾams.

As for these proposals, the committee discussed them yesterday. (Feminine-singular nonhuman topic resumed by ـها.)

In the second sentence, اللجنة is the subject of feminine singular ناقشت. هذه المقترحات is a nominative topic, and ـها resumes it as the object. Calling every initial phrase “the subject” would predict the wrong agreement and lose the object relation.

💡
After a fronted noun phrase, inspect the verb for a resumptive clitic and then look for a later nominative noun. In التقرير راجعه المدير, ـه marks “the report” as object-topic, and المدير remains the subject.

Common Mistakes

Copying singular VSO agreement into SVO

❌ الباحثون ناقش النتائج.

Incorrect—the preverbal human plural requires a masculine-plural verb.

✅ الباحثون ناقشوا النتائج.

al-bāḥithūna nāqashū n-natāʾij.

The researchers discussed the results.

Using full plural agreement before an overt VSO subject

❌ ناقشوا الباحثون النتائج.

Incorrect in canonical formal VSO—move the subject first or make the pre-subject verb singular.

✅ ناقش الباحثون النتائج.

nāqasha l-bāḥithūna n-natāʾij.

The researchers discussed the results.

Giving a nonhuman plural a human plural verb

❌ الأجهزة الجديدة يعملون بكفاءة.

Incorrect—nonhuman plural الأجهزة controls feminine-singular agreement.

✅ الأجهزة الجديدة تعمل بكفاءة عالية.

al-ʾajhizatu l-jadīdatu taʿmalu bikafāʾatin ʿāliya.

The new devices operate with high efficiency.

Treating a fronted object-topic as an unresumed subject

❌ التقرير راجع المدير أمس، بمعنى أن المدير راجعه.

Misleading—the initial report is easily parsed as the subject unless its object role is marked or resumed.

✅ التقرير راجعه المدير أمس.

at-taqrīru rājaʿahu l-mudīru ʾams.

As for the report, the director reviewed it yesterday.

Key Takeaways

  • A preverbal human subject triggers full person, gender, and number agreement.
  • Subject-first order commonly marks an established topic or contrast; it is valid Arabic, not merely English order copied mechanically.
  • In coordinated subjects, first person outranks second and third, second outranks third, and masculine agreement normally covers mixed human gender.
  • A nonhuman plural still takes feminine-singular agreement when fronted.
  • A first-position noun may be an object-topic resumed by a clitic rather than the verb’s subject.
