Non-Human Plural Agreement

One of Arabic’s most systematic agreement rules is also one of the least English-like: a plural noun referring to nonhuman or traditionally “non-rational” entities normally controls feminine singular agreement. Thus الكتب الجديدة وصلت means “the new books arrived”: الجديدة and وصلت are both feminine singular even though الكتب is grammatically plural.

This agreement reaches beyond the verb. Demonstratives, adjectives, predicates, pronouns, and relative markers all follow the same feminine-singular pattern. Learn it as the agreement class of the whole plural noun phrase, not as a special exception attached to one word. The contrasting rational pattern is developed on the human plural agreement page.

The core rule across the sentence

Traditional grammar summarizes the pattern as جمع غير العاقل يعامل معاملة المفردة المؤنثة: a non-rational plural is treated for agreement like a feminine singular. The noun itself remains plural and takes whatever case its sentence role requires.

هذه الكتب الجديدة مفيدة للطلاب.

hādhihi l-kutubu l-jadīdatu mufīdatun liṭ-ṭullāb.

These new books are useful for students. (Demonstrative, adjective, and predicate are feminine singular.)

هذه الجسور القديمة تحتاج إلى صيانة عاجلة.

hādhihi l-jusūru l-qadīmatu taḥtāju ʾilā ṣiyānatin ʿājila.

These old bridges need urgent maintenance. (Formal report.)

💡
Once a plural controller is identified as nonhuman, keep a feminine-singular “agreement chain” in view: هذه ... الجديدة ... هي ... التي ... وصلت. One plural form copied from English can break several linked words, not just the verb.

Matched VSO and SVO

Human plurals change verbal number when moved across the verb. Nonhuman plurals do not: their agreement class is feminine singular in either order.

وصلت الطرود إلى المخزن صباحا.

waṣalati ṭ-ṭurūdu ʾilā l-makhzani ṣabāḥā.

The parcels arrived at the warehouse in the morning. (VSO.)

الطرود وصلت إلى المخزن صباحا.

aṭ-ṭurūdu waṣalat ʾilā l-makhzani ṣabāḥā.

The parcels arrived at the warehouse in the morning. (SVO/topic-first.)

The order still matters for discourse. Verb-first وصلت الطرود presents the arrival as an event; الطرود وصلت makes the parcels the topic or contrast. What does not change is the feminine-singular form وصلت.

For comparison, a following human masculine plural takes a singular masculine VSO verb, while a human plural placed first takes a plural verb:

وصل المهندسون، والآلات وصلت بعدهم.

waṣala l-muhandisūna, wa-l-ʾālātu waṣalat baʿdahum.

The engineers arrived, and the machines arrived after them. (Human versus nonhuman agreement.)

Adjectives: attributive and predicative

An adjective directly modifying a nonhuman plural is feminine singular, regardless of whether the noun’s own singular is masculine or feminine.

تعتمد المصانع الحديثة على أنظمة آلية دقيقة.

taʿtamidu l-maṣāniʿu l-ḥadīthatu ʿalā ʾanẓimatin ʾāliyyatin daqīqa.

Modern factories rely on precise automated systems. (All adjectives agree as feminine singular with their nonhuman plural nouns.)

The same is true of a predicate adjective:

الشوارع هادئة بعد منتصف الليل.

ash-shawāriʿu hādiʾatun baʿda muntaṣafi l-layl.

The streets are quiet after midnight. (Feminine singular predicate.)

Do not infer agreement from the lexical gender of the singular. كتاب is masculine, but plural كتب takes feminine singular agreement. سيارة is feminine, and plural سيارات also takes feminine singular agreement. Humanness/rationality of the plural referent is the decisive factor.

Demonstratives, pronouns, and resumption

Use feminine singular هذه for a nearby plural nonhuman referent and تلك for a distal one. Refer back with هي or attached ـها, not human plural هم/هن.

السيارات الجديدة سريعة، لكنها غالية.

as-sayyārātu l-jadīdatu sarīʿatun, lākinnahā ghāliya.

The new cars are fast, but they are expensive. (Feminine singular ـها refers to the cars.)

تلك الملفات سرية، فاحفظها في الخزانة.

tilka l-malaffātu sirriyyatun, fa-ḥfaẓhā fī l-khizāna.

Those files are confidential, so keep them in the cabinet. (Feminine singular demonstrative and object clitic.)

A fronted nonhuman object-topic likewise uses feminine singular resumption:

هذه الملفات راجعتها الموظفة صباحا.

hādhihi l-malaffātu rājaʿat-hā l-muwaẓẓafatu ṣabāḥā.

As for these files, the employee reviewed them in the morning. (Nominative topic resumed by ـها.)

Here الموظفة is the subject of راجعت. The fronted files are a topic and object, made explicit by resumptive ـها. Word order has not erased grammatical roles.

Relative clauses

The standard relative marker for a definite nonhuman plural is feminine singular التي, and agreement inside the relative clause follows the same class.

القرارات التي صدرت أمس أثارت نقاشا واسعا.

al-qarārātu llatī ṣadarat ʾamsi ʾathārat niqāshan wāsiʿā.

The decisions that were issued yesterday prompted broad discussion. (Relative marker and both verbs are feminine singular.)

اشتريت الكتب التي أوصت بها الأستاذة، وهي مفيدة.

ishtaraytu l-kutuba llatī ʾawṣat bihā l-ʾustādhatu, wa-hiya mufīda.

I bought the books that the professor recommended, and they are useful. (التي، بها، هي are feminine singular.)

The verb أوصت agrees with its human feminine subject الأستاذة, not with الكتب. The attached ـها resumes the books as the prepositional complement. Agreement requires identifying each controller rather than simply matching nearby words.

Animals, personification, and rational beings

Ordinary animal plurals normally follow the nonhuman rule:

الخيول سريعة، وهي تحتاج إلى تدريب منتظم.

al-khuyūlu sarīʿatun, wa-hiya taḥtāju ʾilā tadrībin muntaẓam.

The horses are fast, and they need regular training. (Neutral nonhuman agreement.)

In fables, literary personification, or contexts that foreground animals as individual speaking agents, rational plural agreement may appear. That is a meaningful stylistic choice, not random optionality. Neutral factual MSA keeps feminine singular agreement.

“Rational” is a traditional grammatical category, not a scientific judgment. Human beings—including babies and children—take human/rational agreement. Angels and other beings treated as rational agents also take rational agreement in the registers that discuss them. Conversely, robots, institutions, tools, and abstract ideas normally remain nonhuman unless explicitly personified.

Lexical collectives are a different problem

A singular collective noun is not a nonhuman plural merely because it denotes many members. Agreement follows the noun’s own singular gender: الفريق وصل “the team arrived” is masculine singular; اللجنة قررت “the committee decided” is feminine singular. If a writer shifts to the individual members, notional plural agreement may occur, but edited formal prose should make the shift clear.

Likewise, a morphologically plural human noun such as الأطفال takes human plural agreement despite its broken-plural shape. Meaning, morphology, and word order all matter; no one ending identifies the whole system.

💡
Use a semantic check after recognizing plural morphology: people/rational agents → human agreement; things, abstractions, and ordinary animals → feminine singular; singular collective noun → its lexical singular gender.

Register and variation

Feminine-singular nonhuman agreement is a core formal MSA norm. Regional spoken varieties vary in how consistently they apply it, especially with verbs and pronouns. Those patterns are (regional) and should not be imported silently into edited MSA. Literary personification may intentionally override the neutral semantic classification.

Common Mistakes

Using a plural adjective with a nonhuman plural

❌ الكتب الجدد مفيدون.

Incorrect—both the attributive and predicate adjectives must be feminine singular with nonhuman الكتب.

✅ الكتب الجديدة مفيدة.

al-kutubu l-jadīdatu mufīda.

The new books are useful.

Copying a human plural pronoun

❌ السيارات سريعة، لكنهم غالية.

Incorrect—refer back to nonhuman السيارات with feminine singular ـها, and keep the predicate feminine singular.

✅ السيارات سريعة، لكنها غالية.

as-sayyārātu sarīʿatun, lākinnahā ghāliya.

The cars are fast, but they are expensive.

Using human plural verbal agreement

❌ التقارير وصلوا إلى المكتب.

Incorrect—nonhuman التقارير controls feminine singular وصلت even in subject-first order.

✅ التقارير وصلت إلى المكتب.

at-taqārīru waṣalat ʾilā l-maktab.

The reports arrived at the office.

Using plural relative الذين for things

❌ القرارات الذين صدرت أمس مهمة.

Incorrect—definite nonhuman plural القرارات takes feminine singular التي and مهمة.

✅ القرارات التي صدرت أمس مهمة.

al-qarārātu llatī ṣadarat ʾamsi muhimma.

The decisions issued yesterday are important.

Key Takeaways

  • A plural nonhuman noun normally controls feminine-singular agreement throughout the sentence.
  • Use هذه/تلك، هي/ـها، التي, a feminine-singular adjective, and a feminine-singular verb.
  • VSO and SVO differ in information structure, but a nonhuman plural’s feminine-singular agreement remains stable in both.
  • Ordinary animals follow the rule; personified agents may take rational agreement as a labeled literary choice.
  • Singular collectives follow lexical gender, while broken plurals referring to humans remain human and take human agreement.
