How MSA Expresses Ongoing Events

Formal contemporary MSA does not require a dedicated equivalent of English be + -ing. The ordinary indicative imperfect can mean “writes,” “is writing,” or sometimes “will write,” and context supplies the viewpoint. تراجع المديرة التقرير الآن unambiguously means “the director is reviewing the report now” because الآن locates the uncompleted event at speaking time.

This is not a missing piece of Arabic grammar. The imperfect already presents an event without enclosing it as completed; time expressions, discourse, and lexical meaning decide whether that open view is habitual, ongoing, or future. Constructions with أخذ or ظلّ add onset or duration, so they are useful only when those meanings are intended.

The present-time overview contrasts habits and current events at an earlier level. Here the focus is how writers make an ongoing reading clear without importing an English auxiliary.

The plain imperfect is the default

Take Form III رَاجَعَ / يُرَاجِعُ “review,” root ر ج ع. An ungoverned present-time form is indicative. It agrees for person, gender, and number, but it has no special progressive affix.

SubjectIndicative imperfectPossible contextual translation
أناأُرَاجِعُI review / I am reviewing
هيتُرَاجِعُshe reviews / she is reviewing
هما (feminine)تُرَاجِعَانِthey two review / are reviewing
هنّيُرَاجِعْنَthey (f.) review / are reviewing

أراجع التسجيل الآن لأن الصوت غير واضح.

ʾurājiʿu t-tasjīla l-ʾāna li-ʾanna ṣ-ṣawta ghayru wāḍiḥ.

I am reviewing the recording now because the audio is unclear.

تتحدث المديرة مع المورد حاليا، فاتصل بها لاحقا.

tataḥaddathu l-mudīratu maʿa l-muwarridi ḥāliyyan, fa-ttaṣil bihā lāḥiqan.

The director is speaking with the supplier at the moment, so call her later.

Both forms are simply indicative imperfects. English inserts am/is and -ing; Arabic does neither.

Question-and-answer context can be enough even without الآن:

ماذا تفعل يا سامر؟ أكتب رسالة إلى صاحب الشقة.

mādhā tafʿalu yā sāmiru? ʾaktubu risālatan ʾilā ṣāḥibi sh-shaqqa(h).

What are you doing, Samer? I am writing a message to the landlord.

The question asks about the activity under way, so أكتبُ receives an ongoing reading without an overt adverb.

💡
Start with the indicative imperfect. Add الآن or another time anchor when the surrounding discourse does not already make “in progress” clear.

Time anchors make the reading explicit

Several expressions can locate an event around speaking time:

الْآنَnow, at this momentneutral MSA
حَالِيًّاcurrently, at presentneutral/formal MSA
فِي هَذِهِ اللَّحْظَةِat this very momentemphatic formal MSA

الباحثان يفحصان العينة في المختبر الآن.

ʾal-bāḥithāni yafḥaṣāni l-ʿayyinata fī l-mukhtabari l-ʾān.

The two researchers are examining the sample in the laboratory now.

المحللات يراجعن البيانات في هذه اللحظة.

ʾal-muḥallilātu yurājiʿna l-bayānāti fī hādhihi l-laḥẓa(h).

The female analysts are reviewing the data at this moment.

يعمل المهندسون حاليا على إصلاح الخلل في الشبكة.

yaʿmalu l-muhandisūna ḥāliyyan ʿalā ʾiṣlāḥi l-khalali fī sh-shabaka(h).

The engineers are currently working to repair the network fault.

The last sentence has neutral VSO. The preposed verb is masculine singular يعملُ before the explicit human plural subject; an SVO version would be المهندسون يعملون.

The same form can describe a habit

The imperfect itself does not encode “right now.” Compare the time frames:

تكتب ليلى ملخص الاجتماع كل أسبوع.

taktubu laylā mulakhkhaṣa l-ijtimāʿi kulla ʾusbūʿ.

Layla writes the meeting summary every week.

تكتب ليلى الآن النسخة النهائية من الملخص.

taktubu laylā l-ʾāna n-nuskhata n-nihāʾiyyata mina l-mulakhkhaṣ.

Layla is now writing the final version of the summary.

Nothing about تكتبُ changes. كل أسبوع selects recurrence, while الآن selects an event in progress. English forces different verbal constructions; MSA commonly lets the adverb do the work.

Continuation constructions add meaning

Do not treat أخذ or ظلّ as empty replacements for English be. They profile different phases of an event.

أخذ المطر يشتد مع اقتراب العاصفة.

ʾakhadha l-maṭaru yashtaddu maʿa qtirābi l-ʿāṣifa(h).

The rain began to intensify as the storm approached. (Formal narrative.)

أخذ + bare indicative imperfect marks onset and subsequent development. Geminate اِشْتَدَّ / يَشْتَدُّ, root ش د د, keeps its contracted stem.

ظل المطر يهطل حتى امتلأت القنوات.

ẓalla l-maṭaru yahṭilu ḥattā mtalaʾati l-qanawāt.

The rain kept falling until the channels filled.

ظلّ + imperfect focuses on sustained duration in a past narrative. It does not merely say that rain was falling at one instant.

For continuation reaching the present, ما زال / لا يزال + imperfect is especially clear:

ما زالت اللجنة تناقش البند الأخير.

mā zālati l-lajnatu tunāqishu l-banda l-ʾakhīr.

The committee is still discussing the final item.

Here “still” is essential: the discussion began earlier and continues. For a neutral answer to “What is the committee doing now?”, plain تناقش اللجنة البند الأخير الآن is lighter.

تدعو المنسقة المشاركين الآن إلى العودة إلى القاعة.

tadʿū l-munassiqatu l-mushārikīna l-ʾāna ʾilā l-ʿawdati ʾilā l-qāʿa(h).

The coordinator is now asking the participants to return to the hall.

Final-weak دَعَا / يَدْعُو, root د ع و, retains long ū in the indicative. Ongoing meaning never licenses a fabricated regular stem.

💡
Use أخذ when the beginning matters, ظلّ when sustained duration matters, and ما زال when “still” matters. Use the plain imperfect when none of those extra meanings is intended.

Dialectal progressive markers are not MSA markers

Learners hear overt present/progressive particles in regional speech and may assume formal MSA needs one too. It does not.

FormVarietyImportant limitation
عَمّ / عَمْ + imperfect(regional: Levant)marks an ongoing event in many Levantine systems; exact form and phonology vary
بـ / بِـ + imperfect(regional: Egypt and the Levant)present/habitual/progressive values differ by dialect; it is not one pan-Arabic rule
plain indicative imperfect(formal MSA)context or an adverb supplies the ongoing reading

The dialect forms are valid inside their own regional grammars. In a formal MSA report, replace them with an MSA imperfect and, where useful, الآن or حاليًا. This is a register contrast, not a claim that regional Arabic is defective.

Common Mistakes

Inserting a present copula as an English-style auxiliary

❌ مريم تكون تراجع الطلب الآن.

Incorrect for the intended neutral present progressive — MSA does not use تكون as obligatory ‘is’ before the imperfect.

✅ مريم تراجع طلب العميل الآن.

maryamu turājiʿu ṭalaba l-ʿamīli l-ʾān.

Maryam is reviewing the client's request now.

Losing feminine-dual agreement

❌ الموظفتان يراجعان القائمة الآن.

Incorrect — the fronted feminine-dual subject requires تراجعان.

✅ الموظفتان تراجعان قائمة الحضور الآن.

ʾal-muwaẓẓafatāni turājiʿāni qāʾimata l-ḥuḍūri l-ʾān.

The two employees are reviewing the attendance list now. (Both female.)

Giving a preposed verb full plural agreement

❌ يعملون الفنيون الآن على الخادم.

Incorrect in neutral formal-MSA VSO — use singular يعمل before the explicit plural subject.

✅ يعمل الفنيون الآن على استعادة الملفات.

yaʿmalu l-fanniyyūna l-ʾāna ʿalā stiʿādati l-malafāt.

The technicians are now working to restore the files.

Dropping indicative nūn without a governor

❌ الباحثون يراجعوا البيانات حاليا.

Incorrect — a plain ongoing imperfect is indicative, so يراجعون retains nūn.

✅ الباحثون يراجعون بيانات المسح حاليا.

ʾal-bāḥithūna yurājiʿūna bayānāti l-masḥi ḥāliyyan.

The researchers are currently reviewing the survey data.

Key Takeaways

  • The plain indicative imperfect is MSA's normal form for an event in progress.
  • الآن، حاليًا, questions, and surrounding discourse disambiguate an ongoing reading.
  • The same imperfect can be habitual; time framing, not a separate conjugation, creates the contrast.
  • أخذ، ظلّ, and ما زال add onset, sustained duration, and “still,” respectively.
  • Dialectal عمّ and بـ belong to particular regional systems and are not formal-MSA progressive prefixes.
