Formal contemporary MSA normally uses the imperfect indicative for both “I study Arabic every day” and “I am studying Arabic now.” Arabic does not require a separate auxiliary equivalent to English am/is/are plus -ing. Context—and words such as الآن “now,” عادةً “usually,” or كل يوم “every day”—selects an ongoing or habitual reading.
This is an important mismatch with English. The same Arabic verb form can translate as English simple present or present progressive. Build the imperfect with the agreement forms on the imperfect prefixes and suffixes page; here the focus is how that form locates an event in present time.
One imperfect, two central present readings
Form-I دَرَسَ / يَدْرُسُ “study” has root د ر س. دَرَسَ is perfect and normally presents a completed past event. Ungoverned يَدْرُسُ is imperfect indicative and can describe either a habit or an action in progress.
أدرس العربية ثلاث مرات في الأسبوع.
ʾadrusu l-ʿarabiyyata thalātha marrātin fī l-ʾusbūʿ.
I study Arabic three times a week.
أدرس الآن، وسأتصل بك بعد ساعة.
ʾadrusu l-ʾāna, wa-sa-ʾattaṣilu bika baʿda sāʿa(h).
I am studying now, and I will call you in an hour. (Addressing one man.)
Nothing inside أدرسُ changes. ثلاث مرات في الأسبوع creates a habitual reading; الآن creates an ongoing reading.
Time expressions do much of the work
Common present-time anchors include:
| Expression | Usual contribution | Example frame |
|---|---|---|
| الْآنَ | right now | يعمل الآن |
| حَالِيًّا | currently (formal/neutral) | تقيم حاليًّا |
| عَادَةً | usually | نبدأ عادةً |
| كُلَّ يَوْمٍ | every day | يقرأ كل يوم |
| هَذِهِ الْأَيَّامَ | these days; temporary period | أعمل هذه الأيام |
تراجع مريم الميزانية حاليا مع فريقها.
turājiʿu maryamu l-mīzāniyyata ḥāliyyan maʿa farīqihā.
Maryam is currently reviewing the budget with her team.
Form-III رَاجَعَ / يُرَاجِعُ “review” (root ر ج ع) has no special progressive form. The time adverb and work context make the ongoing meaning natural.
نبدأ العمل عادة في الثامنة والنصف.
nabdaʾu l-ʿamala ʿādatan fī th-thāminati wa-n-niṣf.
We usually start work at eight thirty.
أعمل هذه الأيام من مكتبة الحي.
ʾaʿmalu hādhihi l-ʾayyāma min maktabati l-ḥayy.
These days, I am working from the neighborhood library.
The final example is temporary rather than a permanent habit, but the ordinary indicative still handles it.
Arabic does not require a present progressive auxiliary
In an English sentence such as “She is writing,” is is obligatory. Arabic normally says simply هي تكتب or, when the subject is already clear, تكتب. Present-tense يكون is not inserted to copy English is.
هي تكتب رسالة إلى قسم الدعم الآن.
hiya taktubu risālatan ʾilā qismi d-daʿmi l-ʾān.
She is writing a message to the support department now.
An explicit pronoun can add contrast—“she is writing”—but it is not the progressive auxiliary. The verb ending already identifies third-person feminine singular.
MSA can emphasize continuation with ما زال + imperfect “still be doing,” but this adds the meaning “continue/still,” not a neutral progressive tense.
ما زال الطبيب يفحص المريض.
mā zāla ṭ-ṭabību yafḥaṣu l-marīḍ.
The doctor is still examining the patient.
Use this construction only when continuation matters. Ordinary يفحص الطبيب المريض الآن is enough for “The doctor is examining the patient now.”
Present states and general facts use the same system
English itself avoids progressive marking with many state verbs: “I know,” not normally “I am knowing.” Arabic simply uses the appropriate imperfect without creating a special state tense.
أعرف هذا الطريق جيدا، لكنني لا أعرف اسم الشارع.
ʾaʿrifu hādhā ṭ-ṭarīqa jayyidan, lakinnanī lā ʾaʿrifu sma sh-shāriʿ.
I know this route well, but I do not know the street's name.
تدور الأرض حول الشمس.
tadūru l-ʾarḍu ḥawla sh-shams.
The Earth revolves around the Sun.
Form-I دَارَ / يَدُورُ (root د و ر) is a hollow verb. Its long vowel is part of the verified imperfect stem; the present-time meaning does not make it a separate conjugation.
Agreement still identifies the subject
Time meaning does not erase person, gender, or number. With a preverbal subject, use full agreement.
المهندستان تعملان على التصميم الجديد.
ʾal-muhandisatāni taʿmalāni ʿalā t-taṣmīmi l-jadīd.
The two engineers are working on the new design. (Both female.)
الموظفون يعملون من المنزل يوم الجمعة.
ʾal-muwaẓẓafūna yaʿmalūna mina l-manzili yawma l-jumuʿa(h).
The employees work from home on Fridays.
With neutral verb–subject order and an overt plural subject, the verb is normally singular in formal MSA:
تعمل الممرضات في هذا القسم ليلا.
taʿmalu l-mumarriḍātu fī hādhā l-qismi laylā.
The nurses work in this department at night. (All female.)
The singular feminine تعملُ comes before الممرضاتُ; after a fronted subject, use full plural الممرضات يعملن.
The imperfect is not present time by itself
The imperfect is an aspect-and-mood stem whose time reference comes from its environment. A future adverb can place it in the future, while لم plus jussive imperfect negates a past event.
غدا نراجع الخطة مع المدير.
ghadan nurājiʿu l-khuṭṭata maʿa l-mudīr.
Tomorrow we will review the plan with the director.
لم نراجع الخطة أمس بسبب انقطاع الكهرباء.
lam nurājiʿi l-khuṭṭata ʾamsi bi-sababi nqiṭāʿi l-kahrabāʾ.
We did not review the plan yesterday because of the power outage.
The second نراجعِ is jussive after لم; a linking kasra avoids a consonant cluster before the article. The particle supplies past negation. This contrast is why “imperfect” should not be renamed simply “present tense.”
Weak verbs keep their verified stems
Form-I نَامَ / يَنَامُ “sleep” has hollow root ن و م. Do not build its present by attaching prefixes to perfect نام mechanically; يَنَامُ is the principal part.
ينام الطفل الآن، فلا ترفع صوتك.
yanāmu ṭ-ṭiflu l-ʾāna, fa-lā tarfaʿ ṣawtak.
The child is sleeping now, so do not raise your voice. (Addressing one man.)
The ongoing interpretation comes from الآن and the situation; ينام is the ordinary imperfect.
Common Mistakes
Copying English be + -ing with يكون
❌ هي تكون تكتب الرسالة الآن.
Incorrect as a neutral present progressive — Arabic normally uses the simple imperfect.
✅ هي تكتب الرسالة الآن.
hiya taktubu r-risālata l-ʾān.
She is writing the message now.
Keeping indicative nūn after a jussive governor
❌ لم يراجعون الخطة أمس.
Incorrect — لم governs the jussive, so plural يراجعون loses its mood-marking nūn.
✅ لم يراجعوا الخطة أمس.
lam yurājiʿū l-khuṭṭata ʾams.
They did not review the plan yesterday.
Dropping feminine agreement
❌ مريم يراجع الميزانية الآن.
Incorrect — the preverbal feminine subject مريم requires تراجع.
✅ مريم تراجع الميزانية الآن.
maryamu turājiʿu l-mīzāniyyata l-ʾān.
Maryam is reviewing the budget now.
Using full plural agreement in neutral VSO
❌ يعملون الموظفون من المنزل اليوم.
Incorrect as neutral formal-MSA VSO — use a singular preceding verb or put the subject first.
✅ يعمل الموظفون من المنزل اليوم.
yaʿmalu l-muwaẓẓafūna mina l-manzili l-yawm.
The employees are working from home today.
Regularizing a hollow imperfect from the perfect
❌ الطفل ينوم الآن.
Incorrect for “sleep” — the verified Form-I pair is نام / ينام.
✅ الطفل ينام الآن.
ʾaṭ-ṭiflu yanāmu l-ʾān.
The child is sleeping now.
Key Takeaways
- The ordinary imperfect indicative expresses both present habits and actions in progress.
- Arabic does not require a present progressive auxiliary corresponding to English be + -ing.
- Time expressions and discourse context select habitual, ongoing, temporary, or general readings.
- The imperfect still marks person, gender, and number, with formal-MSA VSO agreement asymmetry.
- A governor or future context can give the imperfect non-present reference, so learn the stem and its environment separately.
