Present Forms for Scheduled Future

An Arabic imperfect does not become present-tense merely because it lacks سـ or سوف. With a future date, clock time, program, or timetable, the plain indicative can refer naturally to a scheduled event: يغادر القطار غدًا في السادسة “the train leaves tomorrow at six.” The future time phrase does the temporal work.

This resembles English timetable language—“the train leaves at six”—but formal MSA uses the same strategy across institutional notices, agendas, itineraries, and fixed arrangements. سـ remains possible when the writer wants an explicit future assertion; it is simply not obligatory every time the calendar already makes the future clear.

For the form and rhetorical range of the explicit markers, see سـ and سوف. This page focuses on why an unmarked indicative can be fully future in context.

A future adverb can anchor the imperfect

Time expressions such as غدًا, الأسبوع المقبل, يوم الخميس, and في الساعة السادسة locate the event after speaking time. They do not govern a special mood: the imperfect remains indicative unless another particle changes it.

يغادر القطار غدا في السادسة والربع.

yughādiru l-qiṭāru ghadan fī s-sādisati wa-r-rubʿ.

The train leaves tomorrow at a quarter past six.

تفتح المكتبة أبوابها صباح السبت بعد أعمال الصيانة.

taftaḥu l-maktabatu ʾabwābahā ṣabāḥa s-sabti baʿda ʾaʿmāli ṣ-ṣiyāna(h).

The library opens on Saturday morning after the maintenance work.

Neither event is habitual in these contexts. غدًا and بعد أعمال الصيانة identify a future occurrence within an established schedule.

تبدأ الجلسات العامة يوم الاثنين وتستمر ثلاثة أيام.

tabdaʾu l-jalasātu l-ʿāmmatu yawma l-ithnayni wa-tastamirru thalāthata ʾayyām.

The plenary sessions begin on Monday and continue for three days.

The nonhuman plural الجلسات takes feminine-singular تبدأُ and تستمرُّ. Scheduled reference does not suspend ordinary agreement.

💡
When a timetable, date, or agenda already places the event in the future, use the plain indicative confidently. Add سـ for discourse emphasis, not from fear that the unmarked form must mean present.

Institutional schedules favor compact statements

Programs often present several future items under one date or heading. Once the frame is established, every clause does not need its own future marker.

بعد الاستراحة يتحدث الوزير، ثم تجيب اللجنة عن أسئلة الصحفيين.

baʿda l-istirāḥati yataḥaddathu l-wazīru, thumma tujību l-lajnatu ʿan ʾasʾilati ṣ-ṣaḥafiyyīn.

After the break, the minister speaks, and then the committee answers the journalists' questions. (Program wording.)

تقدم الباحثتان نتائج الدراسة مساء الخميس.

tuqaddimu l-bāḥithatāni natāʾija d-dirāsati masāʾa l-khamīs.

The two researchers present the study results on Thursday evening. (Scheduled program.)

The second example is VSO: the preposed verb is feminine singular تُقَدِّمُ before the explicit feminine dual. With the subject first, full dual agreement appears:

الباحثتان تقدمان النتائج في الجلسة الختامية غدا.

ʾal-bāḥithatāni tuqaddimāni n-natāʾija fī l-jalsati l-khitāmiyyati ghadan.

The two researchers are presenting the results in tomorrow's closing session.

Indicative تقدّمانِ retains nūn. The future adverb does not turn it into a subjunctive.

Human plurals show the same order contrast:

يلتقي المندوبون صباح الثلاثاء لمراجعة الصيغة النهائية.

yaltaqī l-mandūbūna ṣabāḥa th-thulāthāʾi li-murājaʿati ṣ-ṣīghati n-nihāʾiyya(h).

The delegates meet on Tuesday morning to review the final wording.

Form VIII اِلْتَقَى / يَلْتَقِي, root ل ق ي, is final-weak. Preposed يلتقي is singular; the scheduled reading does not regularize it or require plural يلتقون before the overt subject.

Plain imperfect versus سـ

Both versions below can be correct, but their discourse packaging differs:

يصدر التقرير النهائي يوم الاثنين وفقا للجدول.

yaṣduru t-taqrīru n-nihāʾiyyu yawma l-ithnayni wafqan li-l-jadwal.

The final report comes out on Monday according to the schedule.

سيصدر التقرير النهائي يوم الاثنين رغم التأخير.

sa-yaṣduru t-taqrīru n-nihāʾiyyu yawma l-ithnayni raghma t-taʾkhīr.

The final report will come out on Monday despite the delay.

The first sounds like a timetable fact. The second makes an explicit prospective assertion and, with رغم التأخير, can carry reassurance or insistence. This is a pragmatic tendency, not a ban on سـ in schedules.

سـ attaches directly to the imperfect and does not change indicative mood:

EnvironmentDual formMood result
plain scheduled imperfectتَصِلَانِindicative; nūn retained
سـ + scheduled imperfectسَتَصِلَانِindicative; nūn retained
لن + imperfectلَنْ تَصِلَاsubjunctive; nūn deleted

الرحلتان تصلان تباعا بعد الظهر.

ʾar-riḥlatāni taṣilāni tibāʿan baʿda ẓ-ẓuhr.

The two flights arrive one after the other in the afternoon.

لن تصل الرحلتان قبل إغلاق مكتب الجوازات.

lan taṣila r-riḥlatāni qabla ʾighlāqi maktabi l-jawāzāt.

The two flights will not arrive before the passport office closes.

In the second sentence, لن explicitly negates future occurrence and governs subjunctive singular تصلَ before the overt dual subject. It is structurally different from a bare timetable statement.

Schedule, prediction, and intention

The same event can be framed in several ways:

FrameTypical interpretation
تبدأ المحاضرة في العاشرةthe timetable fixes the lecture at ten
ستبدأ المحاضرة في العاشرةan explicit statement/prediction that it will start at ten
أنوي أن أبدأ المحاضرة في العاشرةthe speaker's intention, not necessarily an institutional schedule

Do not infer certainty mechanically. A printed schedule can change, and سـ does not guarantee an event. These forms present different discourse perspectives rather than mathematical degrees of certainty.

💡
Ask what licenses the future reading. A date or published program licenses a plain imperfect; a promise, forecast, or contrast may motivate سـ; an intention requires a lexical predicate such as ينوي.

Common Mistakes

Using the perfect despite a future-time anchor

❌ غادر القطار غدا في السابعة.

Incorrect for an ordinary scheduled-future reading — perfect غادر presents a completed departure and conflicts with غدا.

✅ القطار يغادر من الرصيف الثالث غدا في السابعة.

ʾal-qiṭāru yughādiru mina r-raṣīfi th-thālithi ghadan fī s-sābiʿa(h).

The train leaves from platform three tomorrow at seven.

Separating the future prefix from its verb

❌ س تغادر الحافلة بعد عشر دقائق.

Incorrect spelling — future سـ is a prefix and must attach directly to the imperfect.

✅ ستغادر الحافلة بعد عشر دقائق.

sa-tughādiru l-ḥāfilatu baʿda ʿashri daqāʾiq.

The bus will leave in ten minutes.

Dropping indicative nūn because the event is future

❌ الرحلتان تصلا مساء الجمعة.

Incorrect — future time alone does not govern the subjunctive; subject-first dual تصلان retains nūn.

✅ الرحلتان تصلان مساء الجمعة بفارق نصف ساعة.

ʾar-riḥlatāni taṣilāni masāʾa l-jumuʿati bi-fāriqi niṣfi sāʿa(h).

The two flights arrive on Friday evening half an hour apart.

Using full dual agreement before an overt subject

❌ تقدمان الباحثتان النتائج غدا.

Incorrect in neutral formal-MSA VSO — use feminine singular تقدم before the explicit dual subject.

✅ تقدم الباحثتان عرضهما المشترك غدا.

tuqaddimu l-bāḥithatāni ʿarḍahumā l-mushtaraka ghadan.

The two researchers give their joint presentation tomorrow. (Both female.)

Key Takeaways

  • A plain indicative imperfect can refer to a scheduled future event.
  • Dates, times, agendas, and institutional context establish future reference without obligatory سـ.
  • سـ is still grammatical in a schedule; it makes the future assertion overt and may add emphasis in context.
  • Time adverbials do not govern mood, so indicative dual and plural forms retain nūn.
  • Word order, gender, number, and weak-stem behavior remain unchanged by scheduled reference.
