Adjectives with Non-Human Plurals

In Arabic, a plural noun referring to nonhuman things normally takes a feminine singular adjective. Thus كتب جديدة means “new books,” even though كتب is plural and its singular كتاب is masculine. The adjective is not “failing” to agree: feminine singular is precisely the agreement form that formal Arabic assigns to a non-rational plural.

This rule is standard in (formal) contemporary Modern Standard Arabic. It covers things, places, ideas, and normally animals. Human and other grammatically rational plural referents follow a different pattern and take full plural agreement. The semantic distinction matters more than the visible shape of the plural ending; Human and Non-Human Plurals gives the corresponding noun-level overview.

The rule in one table

ReferentNounAdjectivePhrase
one masculine thingجهازحديثجهاز حديث
one feminine thingآلةحديثةآلة حديثة
several peopleفنيونماهرونفنيون ماهرون
several thingsأجهزةحديثةأجهزة حديثة

The following four-way set shows the decision. Singular nouns use their lexical gender; a human plural uses a plural adjective; a nonhuman plural uses feminine singular.

هذا جهاز حديث.

hādhā jihāzun ḥadīth.

This is a modern device.

هذه آلة حديثة.

hādhihi ʾālatun ḥadītha(h).

This is a modern machine.

هؤلاء فنيون ماهرون.

hāʾulāʾi fanniyyūna māhirūn.

These are skilled technicians.

هذه أجهزة حديثة.

hādhihi ʾajhizatun ḥadītha(h).

These are modern devices.

English encourages learners to copy the plural idea onto every modifier: books plus new. Arabic instead classifies the plural referent. Once the answer is “nonhuman,” the adjective enters the feminine singular agreement pattern.

💡
Ignore the singular noun's gender for this decision. كتاب is masculine and سيارة is feminine, but their nonhuman plurals both take feminine singular adjectives: كتب جديدة، سيارات جديدة.

Broken and sound plurals behave alike

The rule applies to broken plurals such as كتب “books,” جسور “bridges,” and برامج “programs.” It also applies to nonhuman nouns with a sound feminine plural in ـات, such as سيارات “cars,” صفحات “pages,” and اقتراحات “proposals.” A word ending in ـات is morphologically plural, but its adjective is not automatically plural.

وصلت كتب جديدة إلى مكتبة الحي.

waṣalat kutubun jadīdatun ʾilā maktabati l-ḥayy.

New books arrived at the neighborhood library.

وصلت سيارات جديدة إلى المعرض صباحا.

waṣalat sayyārātun jadīdatun ʾilā l-maʿriḍi ṣabāḥā.

New cars arrived at the showroom this morning.

تضررت الجسور القديمة بعد العاصفة.

taḍarrarati l-jusūru l-qadīmatu baʿda l-ʿāṣifa(h).

The old bridges were damaged after the storm.

حذفت البرامج القديمة من الحاسوب.

ḥadhaftu l-barāmija l-qadīmata mina l-ḥāsūb.

I deleted the old programs from the computer.

The adjective's feminine singular shape is stable, but case and definiteness still change. It is جديدةٌ in the nominative, جديدةً in the accusative, and جديدةٍ in the genitive when indefinite. With a definite noun it takes الـ and the corresponding single case vowel.

Case still agrees

Feminine singular agreement does not make the adjective indeclinable. It still matches the noun phrase's case category, even when the noun and adjective belong to different declension classes and therefore show different vowels.

راجعت الصفحات الأخيرة من العقد.

rājaʿtu ṣ-ṣafaḥāti l-ʾakhīrata mina l-ʿaqd.

I reviewed the final pages of the contract.

Here الصفحاتِ is a definite sound feminine plural direct object and shows accusative kasra, while feminine singular الأخيرةَ shows accusative fatḥa. They agree in accusative case despite different surface vowels.

درست اللجنة خيارات عملية للمشكلة.

darasati l-lajnatu khiyārātin ʿamaliyyatan li-l-mushkila(h).

The committee studied practical options for the problem.

نحتاج إلى حلول عملية قبل الجمعة.

naḥtāju ʾilā ḥulūlin ʿamaliyyatin qabla l-jumuʿa(h).

We need practical solutions before Friday.

In the second sentence, preposition إلى governs genitive حلولٍ عمليةٍ. The adjective is feminine singular because حلول is nonhuman, and genitive because the whole phrase is governed by the preposition.

Definiteness distinguishes phrase from sentence

The nonhuman-plural rule applies to both attributive and predicative adjectives. Definiteness tells you which function the adjective has. In الملفات السرية, article-bearing السرية belongs inside “the confidential files.” In الملفات سرية, indefinite سرية is the predicate “are confidential.”

الملفات السرية

al-milaffātu s-sirriyyatu

the confidential files

الملفات سرية.

al-milaffātu sirriyya(h).

The files are confidential.

وصل المهندسون الجدد، ووصلت المعدات الجديدة بعد ساعة.

waṣala l-muhandisūna l-jududu, wa-waṣalati l-muʿaddātu l-jadīdatu baʿda sāʿa(h).

The new engineers arrived, and the new equipment arrived an hour later.

This last contrast separates the two systems cleanly: humans المهندسون take plural الجدد, while things المعدات take feminine singular الجديدة. The preceding verb is singular in neutral verb–subject order in both clauses, a separate agreement rule.

Adjective stacks and iḍāfa scope

Every adjective in a stack follows the same nonhuman-plural agreement target. A stack may therefore contain several feminine singular forms even though its noun is visibly plural.

راجعنا التقارير المالية السنوية الجديدة أمس.

rājaʿnā t-taqārīra l-māliyyata s-sanawiyyata l-jadīdata ʾams.

We reviewed the new annual financial reports yesterday.

Agreement can reveal scope in an iḍāfa, but nonhuman agreement can also create real ambiguity. In ordinary unvocalized writing and a sentence-final pausal reading, feminine singular القديمة in أبواب المدرسة القديمة may modify nonhuman plural أبواب “doors” or feminine singular المدرسة “school.” Context must decide. A fully inflected nonpausal reading could distinguish nominative القديمةُ for the doors from genitive القديمةِ for the school.

أغلقت أبواب المدرسة القديمة.

ʾughliqat ʾabwābu l-madrasati l-qadīma(h).

The doors of the old school were closed. The Arabic can also mean “the old doors of the school.”

With nouns of different gender, agreement can disambiguate. Feminine القديمة points to nonhuman plural أبواب, while masculine القديم points to singular masculine المبنى.

استبدلنا أبواب المبنى القديمة هذا الأسبوع.

ʾistabdalnā ʾabwāba l-mabnā l-qadīmata hādhā l-ʾusbūʿ.

We replaced the old doors of the building this week.

استبدلنا أبواب المبنى القديم هذا الأسبوع.

ʾistabdalnā ʾabwāba l-mabnā l-qadīmi hādhā l-ʾusbūʿ.

We replaced the doors of the old building this week.

💡
Feminine singular agreement is a powerful diagnostic, but not a universal disambiguator. If two possible heads both demand feminine singular, as in أبواب المدرسة القديمة, careful formal prose should rephrase when context is not enough.

The semantic boundary

Humans are grammatically rational and normally trigger full plural agreement. Animals generally enter the nonhuman pattern in contemporary neutral prose: الخيول السريعة “the fast horses.” (Literary) personification can present animals or other beings as rational participants and alter agreement, but that is a deliberate semantic choice, not the everyday default.

Institutions expressed by plural nonhuman nouns also remain nonhuman grammatically, even if people run them. الشركات الكبيرة قررت uses feminine singular الكبيرة and قررت because شركات denotes companies, not a group of named executives.

Common Mistakes

Putting the adjective before the noun

❌ جديدة سيارات وصلت اليوم.

Incorrect for the neutral phrase “new cars” — an attributive adjective follows the noun.

✅ وصلت سيارات جديدة إلى الميناء اليوم.

waṣalat sayyārātun jadīdatun ʾilā l-mīnāʾi l-yawm.

New cars arrived at the port today.

Omitting definiteness agreement

❌ راجعت الوثائق مهمة التي وصلت اليوم.

Incorrect — the adjective belongs inside the definite noun phrase selected by التي, so it must be definite.

✅ راجعت الوثائق المهمة التي وصلت اليوم.

rājaʿtu l-wathāʾiqa l-muhimmata llatī waṣalati l-yawm.

I reviewed the important documents that arrived today.

Copying plural number onto the adjective

❌ الحواسيب السريعون نفدت من المخزون.

Incorrect — computers are nonhuman, so the adjective must be feminine singular.

✅ الحواسيب السريعة نفدت من المخزون.

al-ḥawāsību s-sarīʿatu nafidat mina l-makhzūn.

The fast computers are out of stock.

Copying the singular noun's masculine gender

❌ البرامج الحديث مفيدة.

Incorrect — although singular برنامج is masculine, plural برامج requires feminine singular الحديثة.

✅ البرامج الحديثة مفيدة للشركات الصغيرة.

al-barāmiju l-ḥadīthatu mufīdatun li-sh-sharikāti ṣ-ṣaghīra(h).

Modern programs are useful for small companies.

Guessing singular gender from English meaning

❌ الطريقة واضح للجميع.

Incorrect — طريقة is grammatically feminine, regardless of the genderless English word “method.”

✅ الطريقة واضحة للجميع.

aṭ-ṭarīqatu wāḍiḥatun li-l-jamīʿ.

The method is clear to everyone.

Key Takeaways

  • Nonhuman plural nouns normally take feminine singular adjectives.
  • The rule applies to broken plurals and sound plurals alike, whatever the singular noun's gender.
  • The adjective still agrees in definiteness and case; feminine singular does not mean indeclinable.
  • Human plurals take full plural agreement, while most animals use the nonhuman pattern in neutral MSA.
  • Nonhuman agreement can clarify adjective scope, but it can also leave an iḍāfa genuinely ambiguous.
