Imperfect Aspect: Habit, Process, and General Truth

The Arabic imperfect presents a situation from inside, without packaging its endpoint as complete. That unbounded viewpoint makes it natural for habits, actions in progress, repeated processes, states, and general truths. It does not, by itself, mean only “present tense”: a time expression or a governing particle can place an imperfect in the future or the past.

English divides much of this territory between the simple present and be + -ing. Formal contemporary MSA normally uses the same indicative imperfect for “she reads every evening” and “she is reading now.” Context supplies the difference. This page explains those readings; the regular imperfect paradigm gives all fourteen agreement cells.

One form, several unbounded readings

Form I عَمِلَ / يَعْمَلُ “work,” root ع-م-ل, is a regular strong verb. Its ungoverned imperfect is indicative. A small agreement sample shows that aspect and subject marking coexist:

SubjectIndicativePossible contextual reading
أناأَعْمَلُI work / I am working
هما، feminineتَعْمَلَانِthe two women work / are working
هميَعْمَلُونَthey work / are working
هنيَعْمَلْنَthe women work / are working

The verb’s complements remain lexical. عمل في المستشفى means “work at/in the hospital,” while عمل على المشروع means “work on the project.” Aspect does not choose the preposition.

يعمل فهد في المستشفى خلال عطلة نهاية الأسبوع

yaʿmalu fahdun fī l-mustashfā khilāla ʿuṭlati nihāyati l-ʾusbūʿ

Fahd works at the hospital on weekends.

نعمل الآن على النسخة التي ستعرض على اللجنة

naʿmalu l-ʾāna ʿalā n-nuskhati llatī satuʿraḍu ʿalā l-lajna

We are now working on the version that will be presented to the committee.

The morphology of يعملُ and نعملُ does not contain “habit” or “progressive.” The weekend schedule in the first example creates repetition; الآن in the second locates an unfolding process.

💡
Translate the whole situation, not the imperfect in isolation. The same يعملُ can be “works,” “is working,” or—with a future time phrase—“will work.”

Habit and repeated practice

A habit is not one bounded occurrence. The imperfect looks across the repeated pattern without asserting completion of each individual event. Frequency phrases such as عادةً، كل أسبوع، غالبًا make that reading explicit.

تزور سلمى والدتها كل مساء بعد العمل

tazūru salmā wālidatahā kulla masāʾin baʿda l-ʿamal

Salma visits her mother every evening after work.

يراجع المحررون الأرقام عادة قبل نشر التقرير

yurājiʿu l-muḥarrirūna l-ʾarqāma ʿādatan qabla nashri t-taqrīr

The editors usually check the figures before publishing the report. (Verb first.)

In the second example Form III رَاجَعَ / يُرَاجِعُ “review/check,” root ر-ج-ع, precedes an explicit human plural subject. Neutral formal VSO therefore uses singular يراجعُ, not plural يراجعون. If the subject comes first, full agreement returns:

المحررون يراجعون الأرقام قبل كل إصدار

al-muḥarrirūna yurājiʿūna l-ʾarqāma qabla kulli ʾiṣdār

The editors check the figures before every edition. (Subject first.)

A process in progress

An action can be underway without a dedicated progressive auxiliary. English requires is/are in “The researchers are comparing”; Arabic simply uses the imperfect, with الآن، حاليًا or the situation making the ongoing reading clear.

الباحثتان تقارنان النتائج الآن في غرفة الاجتماعات

al-bāḥithatāni tuqārināni n-natāʾija l-ʾāna fī ghurfati l-ijtimāʿāt

The two female researchers are comparing the results now in the meeting room.

الممرضات ينقلن المرضى إلى الجناح الجديد حاليا

al-mumarriḍātu yanqulna l-marḍā ʾilā l-janāḥi l-jadīdi ḥāliyyan

The nurses are currently moving the patients to the new ward.

The dual and feminine-plural forms remain fully formal agreement. There is no equivalent of English progressive be before them. يكونون ينقلون would not be the neutral translation of “they are moving.”

An imperfect may also portray background around a bounded perfect event:

كان الفني يصلح الجهاز عندما انقطع التيار

kāna l-fanniyyu yuṣliḥu l-jihāza ʿindamā nqaṭaʿa t-tayyār

The technician was repairing the device when the power went out.

Here كان + imperfect supplies a past ongoing frame. Perfect انقطع introduces the bounded event that advances the narrative. The imperfect itself remains unbounded; كان establishes the past time.

States and general truths

Unbounded viewpoint also suits situations not normally conceived as completed events: knowing, containing, depending, and scientific or institutional generalizations.

تعتمد هذه البطارية على مصدرين للطاقة

taʿtamidu hādhihi l-baṭṭāriyyatu ʿalā maṣdarayni liṭ-ṭāqa

This battery relies on two power sources.

تدور الأرض حول الشمس مرة كل عام

tadūru l-ʾarḍu ḥawla sh-shamsi marratan kulla ʿām

The Earth revolves around the Sun once each year.

Form I دَارَ / يَدُورُ, root د-و-ر, is hollow. Its long ū belongs to the verified imperfect principal part; it is not a “continuous” marker.

Nonhuman plurals normally trigger feminine-singular agreement, even when the noun comes first:

الأسعار ترتفع عندما يزداد الطلب

al-ʾasʿāru tartafiʿu ʿindamā yazdādu ṭ-ṭalab

Prices rise when demand increases.

Plural الأسعار is nonhuman, so feminine singular ترتفعُ is standard. This is not the human VSO singular rule: the verb stays feminine singular even after this preverbal nonhuman plural.

Time comes from the environment

The indicative imperfect can have contextual future reference without changing its stem. A future adverb is often sufficient; سـ or سوف can make futurity explicit.

غدا يناقش المجلس المقترح في جلسة مفتوحة

ghadan yunāqishu l-majlisu l-muqtaraḥa fī jalsatin maftūḥa

Tomorrow the council will discuss the proposal in an open session.

A governor can instead select a non-indicative mood and supply another time relation:

EnvironmentFormTime supplied by context/governor
ungovernedيَعْمَلُونَpresent or contextual future
لَنْ + subjunctiveلَنْ يَعْمَلُواfuture denial
لَمْ + jussiveلَمْ يَعْمَلُواpast denial

The shared imperfect stem does not make these all present. Mood and time reference are separate layers.

Perfect versus imperfect viewpoint

Compare an event viewed as complete with the same activity viewed as a live process:

راجعنا العقد أمس وأرسلنا ملاحظاتنا

rājaʿnā l-ʿaqda ʾamsi waʾarsalnā mulāḥaẓātinā

We reviewed the contract yesterday and sent our comments.

نراجع العقد الآن ولن نرسله قبل موافقة المحامي

nurājiʿu l-ʿaqda l-ʾāna walan nursilahu qabla muwāfaqati l-muḥāmī

We are reviewing the contract now and will not send it before the lawyer approves.

Perfect راجعنا bounds yesterday’s review. Indicative imperfect نراجعُ opens the current process; after لن, subjunctive نرسلَ denies a later event. Learn each lexical verb through its verified perfect and imperfect, then interpret it inside its governor and time frame.

💡
Check three layers separately: the imperfect stem and agreement, its mood governor, and the time-setting context. Calling every imperfect a “present tense” collapses distinctions Arabic keeps apart.

Common Mistakes

Copying English be + -ing

❌ الباحثتان تكونان تقارنان النتائج الآن

Incorrect as a neutral progressive—Arabic normally uses the simple imperfect.

✅ الباحثتان تقارنان عينات جديدة الآن

al-bāḥithatāni tuqārināni ʿayyinātin jadīdatan l-ʾān

The two female researchers are comparing new samples now.

Treating every imperfect as present

❌ غدا يناقش المجلس الخطة؛ إذن يناقشها الآن أيضا

Incorrect interpretation—the future adverb غدا gives the imperfect future reference, not simultaneous present reference.

✅ غدا يناقش المجلس خطة الطوارئ

ghadan yunāqishu l-majlisu khuṭṭata ṭ-ṭawāriʾ

Tomorrow the council will discuss the emergency plan.

Using full plural agreement in neutral human VSO

❌ يراجعون المدققون الحسابات كل شهر

Incorrect in neutral formal VSO—use singular يراجع before the explicit human plural subject.

✅ يراجع المدققون الحسابات في نهاية كل شهر

yurājiʿu l-mudaqqiqūna l-ḥisābāti fī nihāyati kulli shahr

The auditors review the accounts at the end of every month.

Giving a nonhuman plural full plural agreement

❌ الأسعار يرتفعون عند زيادة الطلب

Incorrect—nonhuman plural الأسعار takes feminine-singular ترتفع.

✅ الأسعار ترتفع بسرعة في موسم العطلات

al-ʾasʿāru tartafiʿu bisurʿatin fī mawsimi l-ʿuṭlāt

Prices rise quickly during the holiday season.

Regularizing a hollow imperfect from its perfect

❌ الأرض تدار حول الشمس

Incorrect for the intransitive verb ‘revolve’—the verified pair is دار / يدور.

✅ القمر يدور حول الأرض

al-qamaru yadūru ḥawla l-ʾarḍ

The Moon revolves around the Earth.

Key Takeaways

  • The imperfect gives an unbounded view suited to habit, process, state, repetition, and general truth.
  • English simple-present and progressive translations often correspond to the same Arabic form.
  • Present, future, or past reference comes from time expressions, auxiliaries, and governors—not from the imperfect stem alone.
  • Human VSO agreement and nonhuman-plural agreement are separate rules.
  • Root class, Form, principal parts, complements, agreement, and mood must all be verified independently.
