Questions & Answers about Görünen o ki, adamın istemsiz tepkileri anlattıklarıyla örtüşmüyor.
How does the grammar of görünen o ki work in this sentence?
This is the focus of the current lesson. Görün- means to appear or to seem, and the -en suffix makes it a substantivized participle, meaning 'that which appears'. O means 'that' or 'it', and the conjunction ki links it to the main clause. Literally, it translates to 'That which appears is that...', but it functions as the standard fixed phrase for 'It seems that...' or 'Apparently...'.
How does anlattıklarıyla break down to mean 'with what he told'?
It consists of anlat- (to tell) + -tık (past/present object participle) + -lar (plural) + -ı (possessive 'his') + -(y)la ('with'). It literally means 'with his told things'. The plural -lar is used here because the things he said are being treated as multiple statements that do not match his reactions.
What is the root of istemsiz (involuntary)?
It comes from the noun istem, which means 'will', 'volition', or 'desire' (which itself is derived from the verb iste-, to want). By adding the suffix -siz (meaning 'without'), you get 'without will', which is how Turkish expresses 'involuntary'.
Why is örtüşmek translated as 'match' here, and what grammatical case does it pair with?
