Questions & Answers about O gezegene dair büyük hedeflerimiz var, ne var ki atmosfer solunabilir değil.
How exactly does ne var ki work in this sentence, and can I just use ama instead?
Ne var ki translates to 'however' or 'nevertheless' and introduces a contrastive reservation. It acknowledges the first statement (having big goals) but introduces a significant obstacle or condition (the atmosphere isn't breathable). While you could grammatically use ama (but) or ancak (however), ne var ki is slightly more formal and emphasizes the weight of the complication.
Does ne var ki have a literal meaning that makes it easier to remember?
Literally, it translates to 'what exists that' or 'what is there that'. You can think of it as setting up a roadblock: 'We have big goals, [but what is there to stop us is that] the atmosphere is not breathable.' Over time, it fossilized into a set conjunction meaning 'the trouble is' or 'however'.
How is the word solunabilir (breathable) formed?
It is built from the verb root solu- (from solumak, to breathe). First, we add the passive suffix -n, making solunmak (to be breathed). Then, we add the ability suffix -abil and the aorist suffix -ir to turn it into an adjective. Together, solunabilir means 'able to be breathed' or 'breathable'.
Why does the word gezegen take the -e suffix before dair?
