Questions & Answers about O, azimle çalışmıyordu ve özetleri hiç okumuyordu.
Could we replace ve ... okumuyordu with the lesson's target grammar, okumaksızın?
You could use the converb to say özetleri hiç okumaksızın (without reading the summaries at all), but that alters the sentence structure. It changes it into a single main action performed without doing another. The original uses ve to keep both negative actions as parallel, equally important facts.
Why do the negative suffixes in çalışmıyordu and okumuyordu use narrow vowels (ı and u) instead of a or e?
This is due to vowel narrowing triggered by the -yor suffix. When a verb or its negative suffix ends in a wide vowel (a or e), the -yor suffix forces it to narrow. Thus, çalış-ma-yor becomes çalışmıyor, and oku-ma-yor (matching the rounded vowel of oku) becomes okumuyor.
What grammar rule turns the word for 'perseverance' into azimle?
This is the instrumental construction. It is formed by attaching the postposition ile (meaning 'with' or 'by means of') directly to the noun. Since azim ends in a consonant, the i drops and it attaches according to vowel harmony as -le, making azimle (with perseverance).
