Questions & Answers about Klanen skulle vara mer samspelta om de inte läste chatten hela tiden.
Why is samspelta in the plural form when klanen is grammatically singular?
This is semantic agreement. Even though klanen (the clan) is grammatically a singular en-word, it refers to a collective group of people. Because the sentence focuses on the individuals acting together, Swedish uses the plural adjective samspelta to match the actual meaning rather than the strict grammar.
Why is the pronoun de used instead of den to refer back to klanen?
This is another part of the semantic agreement happening in this sentence. Because the clan consists of multiple individuals doing the action (reading the chat), Swedish naturally shifts to the plural pronoun de (they). Using the singular den (it) would sound unnatural and overly literal here.
Why do we use the past tense läste when the sentence is talking about a present or general situation?
The phrase skulle vara (would be) sets up a hypothetical scenario. In Swedish, just like in English, you use the past tense in the om (if) clause to indicate that the situation is hypothetical or contrary to fact. They are currently reading the chat, so we use the past tense läste to imagine a world where they do not.
Why is inte placed before the verb läste instead of after it?
