Questions & Answers about Lo de la violencia reciente es muy triste.
Why does the sentence start with Lo de instead of just saying La violencia?
If violencia is feminine, why do we use lo instead of la?
The word lo here is a neuter pronoun. It doesn't refer directly to the feminine noun violencia. Instead, it refers to the abstract "situation" or "matter". The phrase la violencia reciente just specifies which situation we are talking about.
Why use es and not está for being sad? Isn't sadness a temporary feeling?
When talking about a person feeling sad, you use estar (for example, estoy triste). But here, the situation itself is sad. It is a characteristic of the event, not an emotion the event is experiencing! For describing characteristics, we always use ser.
