Questions & Answers about ¿Recuerdas lo de la manifestación del sindicato?
How exactly does lo de translate to 'the thing about'?
The word lo is a neutral article used to refer to abstract ideas, events, or situations rather than a specific masculine or feminine object. When you add de (of/about), the phrase lo de becomes a very common, handy way to say 'the matter of', 'the situation with', or 'the thing about'. It is used to bring up a topic or event that both speakers already know about.
Could I say la de la manifestación instead of lo de?
Only if you were referring back to a specific feminine noun you just talked about. For example, if you were discussing photos (las fotos), you could say la de la manifestación to mean 'the one (the photo) from the demonstration'. But because we are talking about the abstract event or situation as a whole, we must use the neutral lo.
Why isn't there a de right after Recuerdas, like ¿Recuerdas de lo de...?
The verb recordar (to remember) takes a direct object, meaning it doesn't use a preposition. You just say recordar algo (to remember something). However, learners often mix this up with its synonym acordarse, which does require the preposition de. If you used that verb instead, the sentence would be ¿Te acuerdas de lo de la manifestación?
Does manifestación mean the same thing as the English word 'manifestation'?
