Cuaderno is a masculine noun. The word for "this" used right before a masculine singular noun is always este. The word esto does exist, but it is only used for unknown or abstract things (like when asking "What is this?"), never right next to a specific noun.

Why doesn't the sentence start with yo for "I love"?
