Near demonstrative adjectives (este, esta, estos, estas)

Pointing Things Out: "This" and "These"

When you want to point out objects that are physically close to you (things you could touch or are holding), use near demonstrative adjectives. Just like other adjectives in Spanish, they must agree with the noun they describe in both gender and number.

MasculineFeminine
Singular (This)esteesta
Plural (These)estosestas

Singular: Este and Esta

Use este for masculine nouns and esta for feminine nouns. A common mistake is to think the masculine singular form ends in "-o", but it is actually este.

This pencil is my favorite.
Este lápiz es mi favorito.
This blue shirt is very pretty.
Esta camisa azul es muy bonita.

Plural: Estos and Estas

To say "these", use estos for masculine nouns and estas for feminine nouns. Notice that the plural of este changes its ending to "-os" to become estos.

These notebooks are our teacher's.
Estos cuadernos son de nuestro profesor.
These computers are new.
Estas computadoras son nuevas.
