Question 1

Why is consigo used here instead of com ele?

Accepted Answer

Consigo is the 3rd-person reflexive form of the preposition 'with'. Because the subject of the clause (ele) is the exact same person he is bringing the glasses with, you must use the reflexive consigo (literally 'with himself'). If you used com ele, it would mean he is bringing the glasses with a completely different guy.

Question 2

Why does the sentence start with Como to mean 'Since' instead of Porque?

Accepted Answer

When you want to say 'because' or 'since' at the very beginning of a sentence to set up a reason, Portuguese strongly prefers Como. You generally cannot start a declarative sentence with Porque in this way; porque is used to introduce a reason in the middle of a sentence.

Question 3

Why does it say os óculos instead of os seus óculos if the English translation says 'his glasses'?

Accepted Answer

In Portuguese, possessive words are usually dropped when the context makes it obvious who the owner is, especially for personal items like glasses, clothes, or body parts. Since he is the subject and bringing them consigo, the definite article os is completely sufficient to show they are his own.

Question 4

Why use traz (brings) here rather than leva (takes)?

Accepted Answer

Just like in English, trazer (to bring) implies movement toward the current point of focus, while levar (to take) implies movement away. By using traz, the speaker is framing the story from the perspective of the cave being the destination or the center of the action.
