The verb piacere actually means "to be pleasing." This sentence literally says "The city is not pleasing to me, but nature is pleasing to me." Because the city and nature are singular things doing the pleasing, the verb takes the singular "it" form (piace). The word mi just means "to me."

Why is it Non mi piace instead of Mi non piace?
