What exactly does żebyś mean here, and why do we need it after Chcę?
Żebyś introduces a subordinate clause expressing what you want someone else to do or be.
- Chcę = I want (1st person singular).
- żebyś roughly corresponds to English “that you (would)” or “for you to”.
So:
- Chcę, żebyś był… ≈ I want you to be…
- Chcę, żebyś zawsze mówił prawdę. ≈ I want you to always tell the truth.
In Polish, after verbs of wanting, asking, ordering, etc. (e.g. chcieć, prosić, kazać), you very often use żeby + past-style form instead of an infinitive when the subject changes (I want you to…).
Why is it żebyś był, and not something like żeby jesteś or żebyś jesteś?
You cannot use the normal present tense jesteś after żebyś.
