Usages of lectio

A good lesson teaches the students not only new words, but also the skill of discussing.

Lucia does not understand one word of the new author, but after the lesson she finds its meaning.

Adsint discipuli ante lectionem, ne quis vocabulum novum neglegat.

Let the students be present before the lesson, so that no one may neglect a new word.

Let us go to the harbor after the lesson, so that we may see the new ship.

Quo diligentius discipuli lectionem audiunt, eo facilius vocabula novi auctoris memoria tenent.

The more carefully the students listen to the lesson, the more easily they keep the new author’s words in memory.

Let this lesson be brief, but let no word be neglected.

The teacher says: “Learn not only words, but also the use of words; for thus a good lesson and a good author will be useful to you for a long time.”

Discipuli, meditando ante lectionem et tractando post lectionem, sensum obscurum facilius capiunt.

The students, by thinking before the lesson and discussing after the lesson, grasp an unclear meaning more easily.

Post lectionem magistra discipulos ad forum ducit, ubi contio magna iam ante rostra convenit.

After the lesson the teacher leads the students to the forum, where a large assembly is already gathering before the rostra.

Post lectionem magistra puellas ad ripam ducit, ubi parva navicula prope pontem ligata est.

After the lesson the teacher leads the girls to the riverbank, where a small boat is tied near the bridge.

Pater quindecim libris utitur ad lectionem parandam, sed filia quindecim tantum chartas secum fert.

Father uses fifteen books to prepare the lesson, but his daughter carries only fifteen sheets of paper with her.

Today the teacher says that the four cases of this lesson are the nominative, accusative, dative, and ablative.

Post lectionem puella domi matri narrat se hodie didicisse cur quaedam praepositiones accusativum, aliae ablativum, quaedam utrumque accipiant, et cur idem verbum in indicativo aut in coniunctivo alium sensum habeat.

After the lesson the girl tells her mother at home that today she learned why some prepositions take the accusative, others the ablative, some both, and why the same verb has a different sense in the indicative or in the subjunctive.

The teacher is in charge of the library and wants everyone to take part in the lesson carefully.

Quaecumque discipula particeps lectionis est, ea facilius sensum novi auctoris intellegit.

Whatever student takes part in the lesson, she understands the meaning of the new author more easily.

Quamvis pluvia gravis cadat, plerique discipuli lectioni intersunt.

Although heavy rain is falling, most of the students attend the lesson.

After the lesson Lucia spoke with the teacher, and the teacher wrote a new word on the board.
