Questions & Answers about Enfin, nous allons tourbillonner dans cette nacelle toute la matinée.
Why does this sentence use matinée instead of matin?
The word matinée emphasizes the duration or the ongoing experience of the morning, which makes perfect sense here because the whirling happens continuously toute la matinée (all morning long). You generally use matin for a specific point in time or a habitual action, but matinée is used when focusing on how that block of time is spent.
Why is it toute la matinée rather than tout le matin?
When expressing the entire duration of 'all morning' or 'the whole morning', French naturally pairs the adjective tout (which must agree in gender) with the duration noun matinée, along with the feminine definite article la. Saying tout le matin sounds highly unnatural to French speakers in this context.
I know nacelle can mean a hot-air balloon basket. What exactly is it in this sentence?
A nacelle generally refers to any suspended basket, platform, or passenger cabin. Besides a hot-air balloon basket, it is the standard word for a Ferris wheel car, a ski lift gondola, or a cherry picker bucket. Given the verb tourbillonner (to whirl), they are likely on a spinning amusement park ride.
Why use the near future (nous allons tourbillonner) instead of the simple future (nous tourbillonnerons)?
The near future is formed with aller plus an infinitive and is used for events that are certain and about to happen immediately. Because the speaker starts with Enfin (Finally), it implies they have been waiting, are already sitting in the nacelle, and the ride is just about to start.
