Farsi doesn't have a single direct translation for the relative pronoun 'whose'. Instead, it uses the word ke (that/who) followed by the noun with a possessive ending. So, mosâferi ke gushi-ash literally translates to 'a passenger that his/her phone'.

Why does mosâferi have both the indefinite -i ending and the definite object marker râ?

This is a special rule for relative clauses! The -i ending here doesn't just mean 'a random passenger'; it introduces a noun we are about to specify. Because the relative clause then narrows it down to one specific person, it becomes a definite direct object for the verb, which is why it also needs râ.

Why does râ come before the ke clause instead of at the end of the object phrase?

When a direct object is described by a long relative clause, the object marker râ is usually placed right after the noun it modifies (mosâferi) and right before ke. Putting it at the very end of the whole clause would make the sentence structure too hard to track.

Why is the verb peydâ konim in the subjunctive form?
