Questions & Answers about شاید من در این نوبت تو را با یک ترفند جدید مات کنم.
Why does the verb mât kardan (to checkmate) become mât konam here instead of mât mikonam?
Because of the word shâyad (perhaps). Whenever you use shâyad to say something might happen, the verb that follows must be in the present subjunctive form to show uncertainty.
Doesn't the present subjunctive usually need the prefix be-? Why is it just mât konam and not mât bekonam?
That is a great observation! With compound verbs made with kardan (to do), the be- prefix is usually dropped in modern Farsi. So the subjunctive of mât kardan is simply mât konam.
What is the purpose of the word râ in the phrase to râ?
It is the specific direct object marker. It tells us that to (you) is the person directly receiving the action of the verb. In English, we just say checkmate you, but Farsi requires râ to point out exactly who is being checkmated.
How are the words tarfand (trick) and jadid (new) connected in this sentence?
They are linked by the ezafe, which is an invisible short -e sound that connects a noun to its adjective. It is pronounced tarfand-e jadid. Notice that the noun comes before the adjective, which is the opposite of English word order!
