Questions & Answers about شاید من در هر نوبت تاس بیندازم و ریسک کنم.
Why are the verbs at the end of the sentence in the present subjunctive form?
Because of the word shâyad (perhaps/might) at the beginning. When you express that something might happen, Farsi requires the present subjunctive. Since there are two actions connected by va (and), both biyandâzam and risk konam are in the subjunctive mood.
Where does the 'y' sound in biyandâzam come from?
The verb is andâkhtan (to throw) and its present stem is -andâz-. To make the subjunctive, we add the prefix be-. Because the stem starts with a vowel, Farsi inserts a y to connect them smoothly: be- + y + andâz + -am becomes biyandâzam.
If risk konam is also subjunctive, why doesn't it have the be- prefix?
risk kardan (to take a risk) is a compound verb. Normally, the subjunctive of kardan (to do) is bekonam. However, in modern Farsi, the be- prefix is very often dropped from the helping verb in compound verbs, leaving just konam. Even without the prefix, it is still doing its job as a subjunctive verb!
Does andâkhtan specifically mean 'to roll'?
Not exactly. The literal meaning of andâkhtan is 'to throw' or 'to drop'. In Farsi, you don't 'roll' dice, you 'throw' them (tâs andâkhtan).
