Questions & Answers about Hoe hard de muzikant ook blaast, hij krijgt geen kramp.
What is the exact word order for this hoe ... ook structure?
You start with hoe followed immediately by the adjective or adverb (here, hard). Next comes the subject (de muzikant), followed by ook. Any verbs are pushed to the very end of this clause (here, just blaast).
Does ook mean "also" in this sentence?
Not here. When paired with hoe in this specific grammatical structure, ook loses its normal meaning of "also" or "too". Together, the combination translates to "however" or "no matter how".
Why is the main clause hij krijgt instead of krijgt hij? Doesn't the first clause trigger inversion?
Normally, yes. Starting a sentence with a subordinate clause usually forces inversion in the main clause (putting the verb before the subject). However, hoe ... ook clauses are an exception. They act almost like an independent aside outside the main sentence, so the main clause usually keeps its standard subject-verb word order (hij krijgt).
How does this differ from using hoewel (although)?
Hoewel de muzikant hard blaast... means "Although the musician blows hard", which states a simple fact rather than emphasizing a varying degree. Additionally, unlike this sentence, a hoewel clause does trigger inversion in the main clause: Hoewel hij hard blaast, krijgt hij geen kramp.
