Questions & Answers about Het regent, dus we rennen naar binnen.
Why do we need naar here instead of just saying binnen?
The word binnen by itself describes a fixed location (being inside). Because the sentence describes movement towards a destination (running from the outside to the inside), you must add naar to show that direction: naar binnen.
What would it mean if I left out naar and just said we rennen binnen?
Without naar, the word binnen describes where the whole action takes place. So we rennen binnen would mean you are already inside the building and you are running around indoors, rather than running to escape the rain!
Why doesn't the word order invert after dus? Shouldn't it be dus rennen we?
The word dus (so) acts as a coordinating conjunction here, joining two main clauses just like en (and) or maar (but). It sits completely outside the sentence structure, so the second clause keeps the normal subject-verb order: we rennen.
