Questions & Answers about Zonder oordopjes kan ik het harde zingen niet verdragen.

Why does the verb zingen have the word het in front of it?
In Dutch, you can turn any verb into a noun to talk about the activity itself, just like adding "-ing" to a verb in English. When you do this, you use the full infinitive verb (zingen) and it always becomes a het word: het zingen (the singing).
Why does the adjective hard get an -e on the end here (het harde zingen)?
Because the verb zingen is acting as a het noun here, normal adjective rules apply. Since we are using the definite article het, the adjective hard gets an -e added to it, making it het harde zingen.
Why is the word order kan ik instead of ik kan?
The sentence starts with the prepositional phrase Zonder oordopjes (Without earplugs). In Dutch, when you start a sentence with anything other than the subject, the verb must take the second position. This pushes the subject (ik) to the other side of the verb (kan).
Why is niet placed so far back in the sentence, right before verdragen?
The word niet generally comes after a specific direct object. Because het harde zingen has the definite article het, it is a specific object. Therefore, niet is placed after it, sitting just before the second verb at the very end of the sentence (verdragen).
